Imperfect Chiefs carry perfect record into bye

Sports

November 5th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs are an imperfect team with a perfect record. Their offense has been sluggish at best, sloppy at worst. Their defense has given up big plays. Their special teams have made a few mistakes that could have proven costly. Still, Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith points out that even if everything went perfectly, the Chiefs wouldn’t have any better record than the 9-0 mark they carry into their week off.

The Chiefs met to review video of Sunday’s 23-13 win over Buffalo on Monday before scattering for their bye. While players are enjoying some time off, the coaches plan to begin preparation for a high-profile showdown with AFC West rival Denver the following week.

The Chiefs visit the 7-1 Broncos on Nov. 17.

Cardinals will make qualifying offer for Beltran

ST. LOUIS (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals have made a one-year, $14.1 million qualifying offer to free agent Carlos Beltran, though they aren’t expecting him back next year. General manager John Mozeliak and manager Mike Matheny met with reporters Monday for the first time since losing a six-game World Series to the Red Sox last week. Mozeliak says he expects the 36-year-old Beltran to seek a multiyear extension elsewhere.

Mozeliak said it would be difficult to guarantee regular playing time to Beltran, who had 15 RBIs in the postseason. Matt Adams is expected to be the everyday first baseman, cleanup man Allen Craig moves to right field and top prospect Oscar Taveras figures to be in the mix.

Rookie Trevor Rosenthal opens spring training as the closer.

Iowa St coach uncertain on starting QB

Sports

November 5th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Grant Rohach might be getting his chance to try to reverse Iowa State’s free fall through the Big 12 Conference. rohach, a redshirt freshman, is listed as the No. 1 quarterback on the Cyclones’ depth chart for Saturday’s home game against TCU, ahead of season-long starter Sam Richardson. Coach Paul Rhoads says that doesn’t necessarily mean Rohach will take the team’s first snap. Rhoads says it all depends on how the quarterbacks practice this week and Richardson very well could end up starting.

Whatever Rhoads decides, the Cyclones (1-7, 0-5 Big 12) need a big lift at the position. They’ve been outscored 170-41 in the last three games and the offense is struggling just to make a first down.
