AHSTW girls pull away from Griswold

The AHSTW girls basketball team built a 14 point halftime lead and raced away from Griswold for a 58-20 victory on Monday night in Avoca. AHSTW Head Coach Jill Vanderhoof thought her team played much stronger with the ball than they did to start the season.

Ellie Peterson scored 13 of her game high 17 points in the first half. Coach Vanderhoof likes how she can impact the game in multiple ways.

Delaney Goshorn and Ella Langer each added 11 for the Lady Vikes. AHSTW improved to 3-3 on the season and will be back at it on Tuesday hosting Missouri Valley.

McKenna Weichman scored 12 points to lead Griswold, all on three point makes. The Tigers fall to 1-5 on the season and will host East Mills on Friday.

Several fire departments respond to a blaze in Malvern

(Malvern, Iowa) – Firefighters from Malvern and at least a dozen other area departments were on the scene until just before midnight, Monday, battling a large a structure fire in Malvern. The call about a blaze at Mulholland Grocery, 409 Main St. in Malvern, was sent out at around 5:45-p.m. According to reports, employees noticed the fire and tried to put it out with extinguishers, but it became too much to handle. After Malvern Fire arrived on the scene, they quickly requested Red Oak’s ladder truck and one other ladder, in addition to the departments and personnel on hand.

Additional tanker support was being provided by crews from Hastings, Silver City, Glenwood, Macedonia, Carson and Sidney.  Henderson, Randolph, Shenandoah and Oak Township Fire were also on the scene. Pacific Junction’s 3,000 gallon tanker was requested, along with another tanker with 5,000 gallons of water.

Firefighters were in a defensive mode, trying to prevent flames from spreading to adjacent buildings. Authorities confirmed at 7:30-p.m., that the roof and second floor of the structure had collapsed. Crews were evacuated from the roof at around 7:15-p.m. when the danger of collapse became imminent. Crews were also attempting to slow down the amount of water being used from hydrants to lessen the strain on the city’s water system.

There were no injuries reported. Malvern Grocery is a fourth generation full service grocery store, specializing in premium quality meats, homemade fresh and smoked sausages and other homemade items.

Work Release Escape of Nicholas Dewayne Jerrold Stone

DES MOINES – An inmate at the Fort Des Moines Men’s Correction Center failed to return to the facility from work release as required, Sunday. Authorities say 34-year-old Nicholas Dewayne Jerrold Stone, convicted of Domestic Abuse Assault-3rd or Subsequent Offense in Polk County, is 5’11” tall, and weighs 282 pounds. He was admitted to the work release facility on October 1, 2021.

Former Dubuque postal worker sentenced for stealing checks

(Radio Iowa) – A former eastern Iowa postal employee who took hundreds of thousands of dollars in checks from the mail will spend more than two years in federal prison. Thirty-eight-year-old Amy Jurisic worked at the Dubuque Post Office and pleaded guilty in June to one count of mail theft. Evidence at her hearing showed that between June 2017 through at least October 2018, Jurisic stole more than 60 pieces of mail that contained 650-thousand dollars worth of checks.

She gave the checks to an individual in Chicago who would attempt to deposit them into various bank accounts. Approximately 62-thousand dollars worth of checks were actually deposited into bank accounts. She was sentenced to 33 months in prison and ordered to pay back the 62-thousand dollars.

Mills County Sheriff’s report for 12/13/21

Sheriff’s officials in Mills County, Monday, said three people were arrested over the past few days. Saturday afternoon, 41-year-old Justin Dean Miller, of Lenox, was arrested for OWI/3rd offense, Driving While Revoked, and Operating (a vehicle) without the ignition interlock. His bond was set at $6,300.

Friday afternoon, 31-year-old Heather Renee Plum, of Council Bluffs, was arrested at the Mills County Sheriff’s Office on a warrant for Theft in the 3rd Degree. Her bond was set at $2,000. And, at around 11:54-p.m., Friday, 35-year-old Brett Michael Claccio, of Malvern, was arrested for OWI/1st offense. His bond was set at $1,000.

The Sheriff’s Dept. said also, 35-year-old Aaron Nosekable, of Glenwood, was injured at around 5:52-a.m. Saturday, when his 2002 Dodge hit a patch of ice in the 21,000 block of Barrus Road, in Mills County. The vehicle went out of control and rolled into the north ditch. The truck came to rest and then rolled down the embankment again. Nosekable suffered minor injuries and was transported to Jennie Edmundson Hospital by Silver City Rescue.

Authorities said also, there were no injuries reported following a rollover accident at around 5:04-a.m. Saturday. A 2000 Ford driven by 59-year-old Vincent Salerno, of Pacific Junction, was traveling south on 195th Street, when the vehicle lost traction due to slick road conditions. The vehicle entered the east ditch before it rolled over and came to rest.

Hall and McDonald IV earn AP All-American Honors

Breece Hall and Will McDonald IV received AP All-America honors for the 2021 season on Monday.

Hall was named to the First Team and for the second straight season becomes a consensus All-American. The tailback from was also named a First-Team selection by the Walter Camp Foundation and was a Second-Team choice by the Football Writers Association of America. Hall tallied 1,472 yards and 20 touchdowns this season.

Junior defensive end Will McDonald IV was named a Third-Team AP All-American. He also can become a consensus All-American. He was a First-Team choice by the FWAA and if he is named to either the AFCA or The Sporting News lists this week he will dubbed a consensus All-American as well. McDonald IV has tallied 22 sacks over the past two seasons and is second in Big 12 history with 29 for his career.

Linderbaum, Moss earn AP All-America Honors

IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa junior center Tyler Linderbaum has been named first-team All-America by the Associated Press, while senior defensive back Riley Moss was named third-team All-America on the Associated Press honor squad.  

With the Associated Press announcement, Linderbaum gains consensus All-America status by being selected first team by the Walter Camp Foundation, the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) and Associated Press. Sporting News will announce its All-America team on Tuesday, while the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) will release its team on Wednesday. 

Linderbaum becomes the 28th Hawkeye to earn consensus All-America status, while two of those players (OL Calvin Jones and LB Larry Station) earned the distinction in two separate seasons. Iowa football has had a consensus All-American in three straight seasons for the first time in program history. 

Along with the consensus All-America status, Linderbaum received the Rimington Trophy, which is awarded to the nation’s top center. He was a finalist for the Rotary Lombardi Award and the Outland Trophy. He was named the Rimington-Pace Offensive Lineman of the Year in the Big Ten, while earning first-team All-Big Ten honors for the second straight season. 

The Solon, Iowa, native (6-foot-3, 290-pounds) has started 34 consecutive games at center after starting his Hawkeye career at defensive lineman as a true freshman. Iowa has posted a 26-8 record during that span.   

Moss (6-1, 194) earns third team honors on the Associated Press team after being named second-team All-America by the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA). He is the fifth Hawkeye to be named the Tatum-Woodson Big Ten Defensive Back of the Year and earned first-team All-Big Ten honors from league coaches and media.   

The Ankeny, Iowa, native ranks 11th in the country and third in the Big Ten with four interceptions. Moss had two interceptions returns for touchdowns in Iowa’s opening win over Indiana. He is tied for 11th in career interceptions (10-239-3 TDs), is one of three players in program history with three interception returns for touchdowns and ranks second in career interception return yards.  

Iowa won its final six games in 2020 and began the 2021 season with six straight wins. The Hawkeyes closed the regular season with four straight victories to earn the Big Ten’s West Division championship.  

The 15th-ranked Hawkeyes will face No. 22 Kentucky in the 2022 VRBO Citrus Bowl on Jan. 1 in Orlando, Florida. Kickoff is set for 12:06 p.m. (CT) from Camping World Stadium. The game will be televised on ABC.  

Brockington named Big 12 Newcomer of the Week

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State guard Izaiah Brockington has been named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week after averaging 19.0 points and 8.5 rebounds last week in wins over Iowa and Jackson State.

Brockington shot 65.2 percent from the field and connected on 3-of-5 three-point attempts.

The Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, native was unstoppable against the Hawkeyes, connecting on 11-of-14 shots, including 3-of-5 behind the arc and 4-for-6 at the line to finish with 29 points. Brockington also pulled down 10 boards against Iowa to post his fourth double-double of the season.

Brockington followed that performance with nine points and seven rebounds in the Cyclones’ win against Jackson State.

Iowa State is 10-0 this season and ranked No. 11 in the latest Associated Press Top 25. Brockington and the Cyclones return to action on Sunday, Dec. 19 against Southeastern Louisiana.
