IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) – Iowa football coach Kirk Ferentz is contributing $500,000 to the Iowa Football Legacy Campaign, which is financing new football facilities.  The University of Iowa Foundation announced the donation Friday by Kirk and Mary Ferentz, noting it’s part of $34 million raised for the campaign, which is $1 million from its goal.  The University of Iowa Department of Intercollegiate Athletics is providing the remainder of the $55 million campaign.

The campaign is financing an already-completed indoor practice facility and a 76,000-square-foot Football Operations Center, expected to be completed in summer 2014. The operations center includes a strength training area, meeting rooms, locker room, offices and exhibit space.

Kirk and Mary Ferentz have donated repeatedly to the university, including gifts to the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and to medical research.

Iowa guide convicted of leading illegal deer hunts

November 15th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A Pennsylvania man who operated a hunting guide service in southern Iowa has been convicted of carrying out illegal hunts for whitetail deer in 2008. A jury in Des Moines on Thursday found Rodney Hughes of Mayfield, Penn., guilty of seven counts of the unlawful sale of deer taken in interstate commerce. Jurors also found him guilty of six counts of willfully submitting false information to state authorities.

Prosecutors say Hughes’ service, Midwest USA Outfitters, was a guide for several residents from other states who came to Iowa to hunt without having a buck tag. Hughes had relatives and friends obtain hunting tags that were used for the deer the hunters killed. He reported the false tag information to the state of Iowa.

The 63-year-old Hughes will be sentenced later.

Williams joins Chiefs, hopes to play vs Denver

Sports

November 14th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Wide receiver Kyle Williams says that he hopes to be able to contribute to the Kansas City Chiefs in Denver this weekend, even though he only joined the team on Wednesday. Williams was claimed off waivers from the San Francisco 49ers a day earlier, and didn’t arrive in Kansas City until after midnight. He spent his first day in the practice facility trying to get up to speed in time for Sunday night’s showdown against the Broncos.

It’s possible that he’ll be able to play on special teams, but Chiefs offensive coordinator Doug Pederson said it would be unfair to expect Williams to contribute on that side of the ball. Williams said he’s willing to help out where the Chiefs need him.

Chiefs spent offseason tinkering for Broncos

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Andy Reid isn’t willing to admit it. Not officially, anyway. But a close look at the moves that he and general manager John Dorsey made once they arrived in Kansas City makes it very clear: The Chiefs were built for the Broncos.

During their offseason overhaul, the Chiefs brought in big, physical cornerbacks Sean Smith and Marcus Cooper. The idea is that they’ll be able to better match up with Demaryius Thomas and Eric Decker, the big, physical wide receivers of the Broncos.

Reid said that the Chiefs were merely trying to find the best players available. It just happens to be good fortune that the moves they made could prove invaluable when the teams meet Sunday night in their AFC West showdown.
