Chiefs forced to bounce back from first loss

Sports

November 19th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs only intend to lose to the Denver Broncos once, and that thought goes beyond the rematch between AFC West rivals in two weeks at Arrowhead Stadium. After falling 27-17 on Sunday night for the first time all season, the Chiefs insisted that they are turning their attention to the San Diego Chargers. They weren’t going to dwell on missed opportunities, turnovers and miscues that cost them dearly at Mile High Stadium.

In other words, they aren’t going to let the fallout from Denver hurt them against San Diego this weekend. The Chiefs are still 9-1 and tied with the Broncos atop the division. But for the first time all season, they arrived at the training facility Monday forced to regroup from a loss.

Struggling Iowa State preps for 3-7 Kansas

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State has faced one of the most grueling stretches of any team in the country over the past two months — and it lost every time. The beleaguered Cyclones get someone they believe they can hang with on Saturday.

Iowa State (1-9, 0-7 Big 12) will have its best chance yet to snap a seven-game losing streak when it hosts Kansas (3-7, 1-6) in a matchup of the Big 12’s two worst teams.

Though the Jayhawks scored their first league win by beating West Virginia last weekend, the Cyclones are still favored to beat someone for the first time in Big 12 play.

After Big 12 win, Kansas looks for 2 straight: faces ISU Saturday

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Kansas coach Charlie Weis was drenched, as if he’d just jumped in Potter’s Lake himself — the pond just up the hill from Memorial Stadium where the goalposts ended up.

It was a celebration two years in the making for Weis, whose face twisted into a shivering smile Saturday from the ice water poured over his head in the waning seconds of a 31-19 victory over West Virginia that ended the Jayhawks’ 27-game Big 12 losing streak.

Now, the Jayhawks (3-7, 1-6) will try to make it two straight. They head to Iowa State on Saturday to face the lone remaining winless team in the Big 12.

Univ. of North Dakota football coach (former ISU lineman) fired

GRAND FORK, N.D. (AP) — The University of North Dakota has fired head football coach Chris Mussman after a 3-8 season. UND athletic director Brian Faison says the two met Monday and Mussman was relieved of his duties immediately. Mussman coached six seasons with UND and had an overall 31-34 record.

He joined the coaching staff as the offensive line coach in 1999, became offensive coordinator in 2001 and took over as the head coach prior to the 2008 season. Before arriving in Grand Forks, Mussman spent eight seasons at Minnesota State University, Mankato. He was a four-year letter winner and starting offensive lineman at Iowa State, where he was team captain in 1990.

Faison says a national search for a new coach will start immediately.

ISU’s Ejim Shares Big 12 Player of the Week Honor

November 18th, 2013 by Jim Field

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State senior Melvin Ejim returned to the floor Sunday and led the Cyclones to a 77-70 win over No. 7 Michigan. On Monday, Ejim was honored for his performance when he was named Phillips 66 Big 12 Player of the Week along with Kansas forward Perry Ellis. Andrew Wiggins of Kansas was the newcomer of the week.

In his first game back from injury, Ejim willed Iowa State to a 77-70 victory of No. 7 Michigan. The forward came off the bench to lead all scorers with 22 points in 28 minutes. He was 8-of-14 (.571) from the field, including 1-of-1 from 3-point range, while making 5-of-6 (.833) at the charity stripe. He grabbed nine rebounds and had three steals in the win, while also adding one assist and one block. It was the seventh 20-point game of Ejim’s career and the 54th time he has scored in double figures.

This is the fourth player of the week honor for Ejim in his career. Last week, Iowa State’s Naz Long and DeAndre Kane were named player and newcomer of the week, respectively.

Iowa State returns to action Wednesday when it travels to Provo, Utah to face BYU.

Manning leads Broncos to 27-17 win over KC

Sports

November 18th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

DENVER (AP) — Peyton Manning went virtually untouched by Kansas City’s sack-happy defense Sunday night, throwing for 323 yards and a touchdown to lead the Denver Broncos to a 27-17 victory over the NFL’s last undefeated team. The Chiefs, who came into the game with a league-leading 36 sacks, barely breathed on Manning, who finished 24 for 40.

The Broncos tied Kansas City at 9-1 atop the AFC West with a rematch set in two weeks. Denver fell short of its league-leading average of 41.2 points but the Chiefs, who came in allowing a NFL-low 12.8 per game, couldn’t keep up. Alex Smith threw for 230 yards and two touchdowns for Kansas City, which hadn’t lost since a 38-3 setback in Denver last December to close out a 2-14 season.

DENVER (AP) — Kansas City defensive end Mike DeVito and Denver safety Rahim Moore were knocked out with injuries in the first half of the Chiefs-Broncos showdown Monday night. DeVito injured his left knee on a short run by Knowshon Moreno in the first quarter and walked off on his own after staying down for a minute.

Moore left the game in the second quarter with what the Broncos called only a lower-leg injury. It wasn’t clear on what play Moore got hurt. Both players were ruled out for the second half. Denver led 17-10 at halftime.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Melvin Ejim scored 22 points and Iowa State beat No. 7 Michigan 77-70 Sunday, spoiling Wolverines star Mitch McGary’s season debut. Naz Long added 16 for the Cyclones (3-0), who held McGary to just one point in the second half while notching one of their biggest wins under coach Fred Hoiberg.

McGary, a preseason first-team All-American who missed two games with a lower back injury, finished with nine points and six rebounds. Nik Stauskas led Michigan (2-1) with 20 points and Derrick Walton Jr. had 13. Glenn Robinson III was held to 12 points on 4 of 14 shooting.

Ejim, who also played for the first time after missing two games with a hyperextended left knee, added nine rebounds as Iowa State closed the game on a 23-10 run.

GRINNELL, Iowa (AP) — Jack Taylor renewed his membership in the Century Club. Taylor scored 109 points for Division III Grinnell College on Sunday, shooting 24-for-48 on 3-pointers in a 173-123 win over Crossroads. The 5-foot-10 guard from Black River Falls, Wis., set an NCAA record for any level by scoring 138 points last Nov. 20 in a 179-104 win over Faith Baptist Bible College.

The only other player to score more than 109 in an NCAA game was Rio Grande’s Clarence “Bevo” Francis, who had 113 against Hillsdale in 1954. Against Crossroads, Taylor was 35 of 70 overall from the field. He made 15 of 17 foul shots.

Taylor scored 71 points in the Pioneers’ 144-99 victory Friday in the season opener against Finlandia.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Devyn Marble scored 22 of his season-high 27 points in the first half as Iowa thumped Abilene Christian 103-41 on Sunday. Marble scored 15 of the Hawkeyes’ first 17 points. Freshman Peter Jok added 15 points for Iowa (4-0). LaDarrien Williams scored 12 points to lead Abilene Christian (0-4).

Marble put on a show in the opening minutes, making six of his first seven shots, including two 3-pointers and a pair of nifty drives. The Hawkeyes shot 62 percent from the floor to eclipse the 100-point mark for the second straight game. Iowa made 9 of 21 3-pointers. Abilene Christian committed 19 turnovers and shot just 26 percent.

Iowa opened the second half on a 32-4 run after leading 46-22 at halftime. Zach McCabe and Gabe Olaseni each scored 10 points for the Hawkeyes.
