Sports

November 24th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Philip Rivers threw for 392 yards and three touchdowns, the final one a 26-yarder to Seyi Ajirotutu with 24 seconds remaining, to give San Diego a 41-38 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday and end the Chargers’ three-game losing streak.

The Chiefs had taken the lead when Alex Smith hit Dwayne Bowe in tight coverage for a go-ahead score with 1:22 left. But the Chargers (5-6) still had two timeouts, and they used both of them to quickly move downfield. Ajirotutu’s TD was just his third catch of the season. It also represented the eighth and final lead change in the game.

Smith threw for 292 yards and three touchdowns for the Chiefs, who dropped their second straight after a 9-0 start. They also lost top pass rusher Tamba Hali and Justin Houston to injuries and now have to turn their attention to the Denver Broncos next week.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs are without starting right guard Jon Asamoah and right tackle Eric Fisher because of injuries against the San Diego Chargers. Geoff Schwartz was starting Sunday in place of Asamoah, who hurt his calf and shoulder in last week’s loss to Denver. Donald Stephenson is starting for Fisher, who also has an injured shoulder.

The Chiefs also are missing starting defensive tackle Mike DeVito because of a knee injury, though defensive end Tyson Jackson is active despite a lingering shoulder injury. San Diego is missing starting left tackle King Dunlap because of a strained neck and starting outside linebacker Jarret Johnson because of surgery on his hand.

Chargers wide receiver Eddie Royal is active despite not practicing with a toe injury. You can hear the game on KJAN beginning at Noon, today (Sunday).

Rohach leads Iowa St past Kansas 34-0

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Freshman Grant Rohach passed for a season-best 300 yards and two touchdowns and Iowa State beat Kansas 34-0 on a frigid Saturday night for its first Big 12 victory. James White and Shontrelle Johnson each ran for a touchdown and Cole Netten kicked two field goals for the Cyclones (2-9, 1-7), who broke a seven-game losing streak at home and sent KU to its 24th straight road loss.

Just one week after breaking a 27-game conference losing streak, the Jayhawks (3-8, 1-7) failed to capitalize on some early scoring opportunities and never got much going in the second half, either. Rohach, who had not thrown a touchdown pass in his five previous games, finished 15 of 20 with one interception and scoring throws of 58 yards to Aaron Wimberly and 15 yards to Quenton Bundrage.

It was the coldest game in Jack Trice Stadium history — 8 degrees Fahrenheit at kickoff.

Nathan Knuffman’s field goal gave Western Illinois a 3-0 lead before the Panthers scored 28 straight first half points. UNI won the game with defense and ball control the rest of the way. Kevin Kintzel returned an interception 30 yards for a touchdown for the Leathernecks (4-8, 2-6) with six seconds left in the third quarter to record the last points scored by either team.

Trenton Norvell was 23 of 52 for 252 yards and three interceptions for WIU.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Richard Carter scored a game-high 23 points, and grabbed 11 rebounds, to lead five Drake players in double figures in an 88-80 win over Nebraska-Omaha on Saturday. Drake (3-1) took a 55-54 lead with 9:53 left on a Carter layup and never trailed the rest of the way. But Nebraska-Omaha (3-3) kept the game close, and was within two points at the 6:18 mark on a Matt Hagerbaumer dunk. But Gary Ricks Jr. responded with a 3-pointer and the Bulldogs held on down the stretch, going 8 for 10 at the line in the final 1:01.

Aaron Hawley scored 14 points for Drake. Seth VanDeest and Ricks added 13 points apiece and Chris Caird scored 12. Devin Patterson and CJ Carter had 17 points apiece for the Mavericks. Hagerbaumer scored nine points to go along with a game-high 13 rebounds and four blocked shots.

November 23rd, 2013 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Jake Rudock threw for 239 yards and a pair of touchdown passes and Iowa rallied from 14 down to beat Michigan 24-21 Saturday. A fumble recovery by Anthony Hitchens with 2:12 left sealed it for the Hawkeyes (7-4, 4-3 Big Ten), who also clinched a winning season after going 4-8 in 2012.

Michigan used a pair of Rudock interceptions to race out to a 21-7 halftime lead. But the Hawkeyes held the Wolverines (7-4, 3-4) to just 45 yards in the second half and jumped ahead on a 34-yard field goal by Mike Meyer with 6:02 left.

Devin Gardner drove Michigan to Iowa’s 31 before he was stripped by Hitchens. He finished with 98 yards passing and two TDs.

Cardinals trade Freese to Angels

Sports

November 23rd, 2013 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals have traded former World Series MVP David Freese to the Los Angeles Angels in a four-player deal. The Cardinals also sent reliever Fernando Salas to the Angels on Friday in exchange for outfielder Peter Bourjos and prospect Randal Grichuk.

The 30-year-old Freese was the MVP of the 2011 NLCS and the World Series, setting a major-league record with 21 postseason RBIs. He injured his back chasing a foul ball into the stands during spring training and never hit his stride last season. He batted .262 with nine homers and 60 RBIs, drop-offs from 2012 when he hit 20 homers with 79 RBIs and batted .293.

The 26-year-old Bourjos is a career .251 hitter with speed, stealing 41 bases in 54 attempts. The 22-year-old Grichuk was an Angels first-round draft pick in 2009 and starred at Double-A Arkansas last season.

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) — Adam Schleisman kicked a 39-yard field goal as time expired Friday to give Carroll Kuemper Catholic a 31-28 victory over Waukon and the Class 2A state championship. Schleisman’s kick, only the third field goal he had tried all season, hit the crossbar and bounced through. It was a fitting finish to a game that matched two first-time finalists and was filled with big plays.

Kuemper (14-0) had tied the game at 28 on Cole Neary’s 58-yard pass to Alex Drees with 3:14 left. It was the second TD catch for Drees, who also intercepted four passes to tie the all-class championship game record. The Knights responded 64 seconds after Waukon (12-2) had gone up 28-21 on Parker Hesse’s 5-yard quarterback sneak on a fourth-and-inches play.
