Iowa State cruises past TCU

Sports

October 8th, 2023 by Asa Lucas

Iowa State scored 20 unanswered points and rolled to a 27-14 win over TCU. The Cyclones are now 2-1 in the Big-12.

That’s Cyclone coach Matt Campbell who was proud of the way his team bounced back from a lopsided loss at Oklahoma.

Iowa State is 3-3 at the midway point and this week will visit Big-12 newcomer Cincinnati.

Second Half PK Lifts Texas over Iowa State

Sports

October 8th, 2023 by Asa Lucas

AUSTIN – Iowa State (4-10-1, 1-6 Big 12) dropped a tightly-contested match to Texas (10-3-2, 4-2-1 Big 12) on Sunday afternoon, 2-1, at Mike A. Myers Stadium.

After the Cyclones struck first in the sixth minute of action as Salomé Prat found Mira Emma, Texas evened the score at one apiece just before halftime. The Longhorns outshot ISU in the second half, and in a multi-shot possession, drew a handball, which resulted in a penalty kick. Lexi Missimo, the nation’s leading point-earner, converted the PK to give Texas the advantage as it would go on to win, with Missimo’s score being the difference.

Iowa State opened the game as the aggressor, recording two shots in the first six minutes, converting on the second as Prat fed Emma across the box as a left-footed, lower right corner score from Mira gave ISU the 1-0 advantage.

The Cyclones held Texas in check for 40 minutes in the first half, weathering a handful of shots as Avery Gillahan tallied one of her two saves on the day. Texas finally broke through the Iowa State defense in the 41st minute.

ISU and UT were knotted at one apiece at the break as Texas held a 6-5 shot advantage as well as a 3-1 corner advantage. Both teams had one save and one goal in the half.

Texas came out in the second half the aggressors, forcing the issue early and pressuring the ISU backline. One possession saw three Texas shots either blocked or saved as Iowa State withstood an onslaught of attempts.

The Longhorns eventually converted their pressure into points in the 72nd minute, as a shot into a crowded box drew an ISU player’s arm, forcing a handball PK. Lexi Missimo took the penalty and converted to put UT up by one.

Iowa State was unable to equal the second goal from Texas as the Longhorns would go on to win their tenth match of the season.

Fannon’s Thoughts

“It’s hard to feel anything other than pride in a wonderful performance by us. We executed our game plan really well and lost the game on a penalty. We’re obviously disappointed with the chances we didn’t convert, and this is something that has haunted us a few times this season.”

Iowa Falls to Purdue in Volleyball

Sports

October 7th, 2023 by Asa Lucas

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — University of Iowa volleyball fell to Purdue University, 3-0, Saturday evening inside Holloway Gymnasium.

Fifth year Caitlan Buettner led the way for the Hawkeyes, posting nine kills. Following closely behind was redshirt freshman Nataly Moravec with eight kills and hitting a .348 clip. Redshirt sophomore Sydney Dennis registered 20 digs on the night, and Bailey Ortega led the team in assists with 20.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Set 1 (Purdue, 25-16): Purdue secured the first couple of points, but freshman setter Kaia Mateo assisted Buettner for a kill to put the first Hawkeye point on the board. The Boilermakers put the pressure on, but Iowa responded with a 3-0 run to bring the set within a point. Mateo registered another assist, setting Moravec up for a successful attack. Purdue went on an offensive run, but redshirt senior Delaney McSweeney came through swinging to put the ball back in Iowa’s hands. Freshman Gabby Deery added a kill to the board thanks to an Ortega assist. A kill followed by an ace by Moravec shortened the spread, but Iowa was unable to catch the Boilermakers and they took the set.

Set 2 (Purdue, 25-17): Purdue was the first on the board, but Iowa took the ball back after a Buettner kill. Iowa kept fighting and the Hawkeyes capitalized on a Purdue error and Buettner went back to serve an ace, shortening the spread to two. Later in the set, Ortega found an open spot across the net for a kill. Iowa went on a 4-0 scoring run, ending with a kill by Deery to make it a two-point game. Buettner battled to keep the Hawkeyes in the set registering a kill and giving the assist to Ortega. Despite Iowa’s late run, the Boilermakers secured the set.

Set 3 (Purdue, 25-23): Iowa came out strong and stole the first point of the set, but Purdue retaliated, taking the lead, 3-1. McSweeney swung strong in the front row, putting one to the ground for the Hawkeyes. Purdue held a small lead, but an error and a Buettner kill brought the spread to one. Redshirt junior Anna Davis found an opening across the net and recorded a kill. The two teams battled back and forth, but a Moravec kill brought the Hawkeyes within one with Purdue up, 8-7. The set remained close as McSweeney added another kill. Purdue produced a couple errors and Davis posted an ace to bring the set within three. Iowa and Purdue were neck-and-neck at the end when senior Audrey Black recorded a kill. The Hawkeyes put up a fight, but Purdue landed on top by two to take the set and the match.

Hawkeyes Fall at Nebraska, 4-2

Sports

October 7th, 2023 by Asa Lucas

LINCOLN, Nebraska – University of Iowa women’s soccer fell to Nebraska, 4-2, on Saturday. Iowa moves to 8-2-3 overall this season and 2-2-2 in Big Ten Conference play.

The Huskers scored two goals in the opening eight minutes of the match and went up 3-0 in the 33rd minute. Iowa responded, narrowing the deficit to one goal heading into halftime, but allowed an early second-half score which ultimately stymied the comeback.

Offensive potency is nothing new for the Cornhuskers, who entered the contest with the Big Ten’s best scoring offense. Eleanor Dale, who notched the first and fourth goals for Nebraska, leads the country with 19 goals this season.

The result was uncharacteristic for the Hawkeyes, however, who entered the contest with just three goals allowed through 12 contests for the nation’s second-best goals against average (0.25). Iowa was previously undefeated in its last 43 games (40-0-3) when scoring two or more goals in a match.

Iowa’s first goal came immediately on the heels of Nebraska’s third score. The Hawkeyes marched down the field, with junior Elle Otto whizzing a dart to the top-right corner to narrow the margin in the 33rd minute. Otto now leads Iowa with four goals this season. The score came on assists from sophomore Shae Doherty and seventh-year Josie Durr.

With just one minute remaining in the second half, redshirt junior Zoë Bessert drilled a penalty kick to bring the lead down to one score. The goal was a career first, as was the shot.

An Eleanor Dale header in 53rd minute would be the final goal of the game, however, coming on a corner kick opportunity.

HEAR FROM HEAD COACH DAVE DIIANNI

“I liked a lot about how our team played today, especially after getting behind 2-0 in the first 10 minutes, but we learned a tough lesson. Details matter in all areas of the game, and when you don’t focus on them, really good teams like Nebraska have the ability to make you pay.

The game was very even in almost every category but there were areas of the game that weren’t sharp enough to control the outcome. We are a good team who had bad moments at times today. We are resilient and will learn from this.”

HAWKEYE NOTABLES

  • The defeat snaps a two-game Iowa win streak against Nebraska dating back to the 2021 season.
  • Otto leads Iowa with four goals this season and is second on the team with nine points.
  • Bessert’s goal came on the only shot of her collegiate career, to date.
  • Seven saves is a season-high for goalkeeper Macy Enneking.
  • 2 for the Money: The last time Iowa lost a game while netting at least two goals was Oct. 1, 2017, at Michigan State (L, 3-2). The Hawkeyes entered the contest undefeated their last 43 games when scoring two goals or more. Dating back to the 2017 season, Iowa now has a record of 40-1-3 when scoring two goals or more. That includes a 5-1-0 record this season, 4-0-2 in 2022, 9-0 in 2021, 2-0 in 2020, 13-0-1 in 2019 and 5-0 in 2018. The Hawkeyes won their final two games in 2017 when scoring two-plus goals.
  • 90 Tracker: Fifth-year Samantha Cary (10), freshman Millie Greer (10) and freshman Sofia Bush played the entirety of the match against Rutgers. The following position players have also recorded at least one 90-minute outing this season: senior Rielee Fetty (4), senior Maggie Johnston (4), junior Kenzie Roling, sophomore Kellen Fife and freshman Eva Pattison.

UP NEXT

The Hawkeyes return home to host Northwestern at 7 p.m. (CT) on Oct. 12. That game will be televised on BTN. Iowa hosts Maryland on Oct. 15 at Noon (CT) for the home finale.

The Hawkeyes competed in eight and four boats, consisting of 1-kilometer sprints.

We really appreciate the Drake Bulldogs coming over here and giving us the opportunity to have a scrimmage to open up the 2023-24 season.”
