KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs put defensive back Sanders Commings on injured reserve Saturday with a shoulder injury and promoted linebacker Josh Martin from the practice squad. The Chiefs (9-2) play the Denver Broncos (9-2) on Sunday at Arrowhead Stadium.

Commings was the Chiefs’ fifth-round draft pick out of Georgia. He broke his collarbone early in training camp and spent the first part of the season on short-term IR. Commings only played in two games and made one tackle before sustaining what coach Andy Reid called a shoulder injury.

Martin joined the Chiefs as an undrafted free agent in May. He was inactive for the first three games before spending time on the practice squad.

PARADISE ISLAND, Bahamas (AP) — Aaron White scored 17 points, Zach McCabe added 14 and No. 23 Iowa rolled into the championship game of the Battle 4 Atlantis, easily beating Texas-El Paso 89-53 on Friday night. Peter Jok scored 14 and Melsahn Basabe finished with 10 for the Hawkeyes (7-0), who have already won five times this season by at least 31 points. Iowa will meet Villanova for the tournament title on later today (Saturday).

After needing overtime to beat Xavier in the quarterfinals, Iowa took care of this one early. A 13-0 run in the opening minutes put the Hawkeyes in control, and Iowa’s first 20-point lead came a mere 14 minutes into the contest. Julian Washburn scored 13 for UTEP (4-3), which will play in the third-place game Saturday. No other Miner finished with more than seven.

Unranked Villanova advanced to the Battle 4 Atlantis title game by stunning No. 2 Kansas. The Villanova Wildcats closed on a 5-0 run as Ryan Arcidiacono hit a go-ahead, 3-pointer with 10.1 seconds left to help Villanova beat the Jayhawks 63-59. It was his only basket of the game, and the Wildcats’ lone field goal in the final seven minutes. Darrun Hilliard and Dylan Ennis each scored 14 for Villanova.

Chiefs’ Hali to play vs Denver; Houston out

Sports

November 29th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Chiefs linebacker Tamba Hali pronounced himself close to 100 percent for Sunday’s game against Denver, while fellow pass rusher Justin Houston is week to week with an elbow injury.  Hali went through practice Friday without feeling pain from a sprained right ankle sustained in last Sunday’s loss to San Diego. He initially thought that the injury was much more serious, but he received treatment early in the week and will play against the Broncos.

Houston dislocated his right elbow against the Chargers and it’s unclear when he’ll return. The Chiefs’ top pass rusher couldn’t have an MRI exam until Wednesday because of swelling, and trainer Rick Burkholder said Friday the elbow was still in a brace.  Chiefs coach Andy Reid does not believe the injury is season-ending.

Rudock passes for 2 TDs, Iowa tops Nebraska 38-17

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) – Jake Rudock threw for two touchdowns, including a 24-yarder to Kevonte Martin-Manley right after Iowa had stuffed Nebraska on a fake punt, and the Hawkeyes finished the regular season with a 38-17 victory on Friday.  The Hawkeyes converted two of Nebraska’s three turnovers into touchdowns and got a short field for a third TD after the failed fake punt. Seven of Iowa’s 15 possessions started in Cornhuskers’ territory.

Iowa (8-4, 5-3 Big Ten) doubled its win total from a year ago and won a fourth road game for the first time since 2009. Mark Weisman ran 24 times for 72 yards and two touchdowns. Rudock left late in the third quarter with an undisclosed injury.

The Huskers (8-4, 5-3) had their lowest regular-season win total since 2008, coach Bo Pelini’s first year, and lost three games at home for the first time since 2007 under Bill Callahan.

Iowa St, West Virginia meet in 2013 finale

Sports

November 29th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) — Not long after Paul Rhoads finally thawed out from the coldest game in the history of Iowa State’s home stadium, the Cyclones’ coach recalled a night at West Virginia in 2005 that was even more bone chilling.

Rhoads was Pittsburgh’s defensive coordinator when the Panthers played in the Backyard Brawl in blustery snow and single-digit readings. He says the wind made that game feel colder than last week’s home finale against Kansas.

Still, Rhoads says the frigid Kansas win has mentally prepared Iowa State (2-9, 1-7 Big 12) for its first visit to West Virginia (4-7, 2-6) on Saturday. Temperatures for the late afternoon kickoff in Morgantown are expected to be balmy by comparison in the 30s.

The game marks the regular-season finale for both teams.
