AMES, Iowa (AP) — Hallie Christofferson was 11 of 16 from the field and a perfect 10-for-10 shooting free throws in scoring 33 points and leading Number 20 Iowa State to a 79-52 win over Cal State Fullerton on Sunday afternoon. Christofferson added eight rebounds to her game totals while Nicole Blaskowsky poured in 16 points and Seanna Johnson grabbed 12 rebounds in the Cyclone effort.

ISU (8-0) never trailed CS Fullerton (1-7), but only led by two (27-25) at intermission after the Titans fell behind by as much as seven in the half. Iowa State entered the second half more determined and stretched the lead to a buzzer-ending 27 points, scoring 52 second half points and improving their shooting performance to 51 percent for the game.

Hailey King scored 13 and Alex Thomas 10 had 10 points for the Titans. Iowa State will host Number 25 neighbor Iowa next Sunday.

“Miracle on Ice” goalie talks about heart health with stop in Iowa

One of the heroes of the 1980 “Miracle on Ice” U.S. Olympic hockey team was in Iowa this past week. Jim Craig was the goalie on the gold medal winning team from Lake Placid, but his visit to Sioux City had nothing to do with hockey. Craig spoke to physicians and medical staff at St. Luke’s Unity Point Health Center about a heredity heart illness that claimed his father’s life — an abdominal aortic aneurysm.

“They call this the silent killer because it’s asystematic,” Craig said. “The things that happened with my father were really preventable. He had a massive heart attack at 48 years old, he had high blood pressure, and he had smoked. So, he had all the criteria for somebody to be screened. And yet, when he went in to the hospital, they thought it was kidney stones.” Craig said he’s raising awareness of the ailment that a medical test can now detect, and save a person’s life.

It’s a minimally invasive procedure,” Craig said. “It’s really simple. You’re in and out in a day and a half. If we can get people to be aware they’re likely to get it, if we can get them aware to be screened, and then they go in and have the surgery…it’s a piece of cake.” Craig has seven brothers and sisters and said one brother has been diagnosed with a similar aneurysm, but has received successful treatment. Craig said he keeps in touch with several of his former hockey teammates — many are now motivational speakers stemming from their Olympic experience.

Iowa to play LSU in Outback Bowl

Sports

December 9th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

The Iowa Hawkeyes will play 15th ranked LSU in the Outback Bowl in Tampa on New Years Day. It will complete a bounce back year for a program that missed out on a bowl in 2012 with a 4-8 record. The Haweyes are 8-4, after finishing the regular season with three straight wins, and will take on an LSU team that is 9-3. It will be the second time Iowa and LSU have met in a bowl game.

Back in the 2005 Capitol One Bowl Drew Tate hit Warren Holloway with a 56 yard touchdown pass as time expired for a 30-25 Iowa win. The Tigers will be without senior quarterback Zach Mettenberger, who suffered a knee injury in the regular season finale but Hawkeyes Coach Kirk Ferentz says in the 2005 meeting the Tigers played three different quarterbacks.

Ferentz says it will be a great opportunity for the Hawkeyes. Iowa became the fourth choice out of the Big Ten and wins over Michigan and Nebraska the final two weeks moved the Hawkeyes up the pecking order. Iowa AD Gary Barta believes fans are anxious to travel to a bowl game after missing out last season. Iowa has always been an attractive bowl team because of the number of fans it brings but Barta says the difference this season were the results on the field.

This will be Iowa’s fourth trip to the Outback Bowl and the first one since a lopsided win over South Carolina in 2009.

The award is named for Hall of Fame defensive back Ronnie Lott and goes to a player with strong academic work, community involvement and team leadership. LANDOVER, Md. (AP) — The Kansas City scored early and often Sunday, breaking a three-game losing streak with a 45-10 embarrassment of the Washington Redskins. The Chiefs improved to 10-3 by dominating an opponent that offered little resistance. They scored on their first four possessions, sacked Robert Griffin III five times and Kirk Cousins once, and returned a punt and a kickoff for touchdowns.

The score was 17-0 after the first quarter and 38-10 at halftime. Quintin Demps immediately answered the lone Redskins touchdown with a 95-yard kickoff return, part of a stunning tally of 321 return yards by Kansas City in the first half alone. The Redskins fell to 3-10, increasing speculation that coach Mike Shanahan will be gone at the end of the season.
