Audubon School Board to act on Early Retirement applications, and more

(Audubon, Iowa) – The Audubon School Board will gather in the High School Board Room Monday (Dec. 20), beginning at 6:40-p.m. for a Work Session. Their regular meeting will follow, beginning at 7-p.m.  Among the action items on their agenda, is:

  • A review, along with the first and final reading of Polices 506.1 & 502.8.
  • Approval of Early Retirement applications.
  • Approving an increase in Teacher Substitute pay.
  • Possible action on approving a Full-Time Elementary School Counselor
  • and, other Personnel matters.

In his report to the Audubon School Board, Superintendent Eric Trager will discuss a Head Start Mask Mandate, and the Federal Vaccine Mandate, among other matters.

Atlantic Parks & Rec to act on new Asst. Director position

(Atlantic, Iowa) – The City of Atlantic’s Parks and Recreation Department Board of Directors will meet 5:15-p.m. Monday, Dec. 20th, at the Parks & Rec Office in Sunnyside Park. Among the action items and/or new business on their agenda, is:

  • Discussion with regard to a new Assistant Parks & Rec Director
  • An upcoming Aquatics Steering Committee meeting
  • A job description for the Sunnyside Pool Manager’s position
  • A possible wage increase for Summer help
  • and the Lions Club Pancake Supper

In his report to the Board, Parks and Rec Director Bryant Rasmussen is expected to discuss:

  • The status of the Ice Rink
  • Winter Recreation Fun
  • Trails that are marked
  • The Candy Cane HUnt
  • Rip-rap at East Ridge
  • The Lighted Parade
  • The more than 20 Rec Programs that were held in 2021, and,
  • The Sunnyside Pool Umbrella’s have arrived for use next Summer.

ALBERT WESSEL, 85, of Greenfield, died Saturday, December 18, 2021, at the Madison County Memorial Hospital in Winterset.  No will be held at this time for ALBERT WESSEL. Steen Funeral Home in Greenfield is assisting the family.

Adams County Sheriff’s report for 12/19/21

(Corning, Iowa) — The Adams County Sheriff’s Office reports three arrests from over the past two weeks. Friday evening (Dec. 10), 36-year-old Ryan Pullen was arrested on a valid Adams County warrant for Failure to Appear (in court). His bond was set at $1,000.  Also arrested on Friday, was 66-year-old Steven Mullen, for OWI/2nd offense. His arrest was the result of an investigation into a rollover accident near the intersection of Highway 148 & 200th Street. Mullen’s bond was set at $2,000.

And on Dec. 5th, Adams County Deputies arrested 23-year old Kimberly Granados, of Osceola, for OWI 1st Offense. Her arrest followed a traffic stop at 230th and Sycamore Avenue. Granados was being held without bond in the Adams County Jail.

RAY ERWIN McINTOSH, 92, of Harlan, died Friday, Dec. 17, 2021, at Elm Crest Retirement Community. Funeral services for RAY McINTOSH will be held 2-p.m. Wed., Dec. 22nd, at the United Methodist Church in Irwin. Pauley-Jones Funeral Home in Harlan has the arrangements.

Visitation at the UMC in Irwin is on Wed., Dec. 22nd, from Noon until 2-p.m.

Burial is in the Oak Hill Cemetery at Irwin.

RAY McINTOSH is survived by:

His wife – Barbara McIntosh, of Harlan.

His sons – Joseph (Dr. Faye Perkins) McIntosh, of Teton Village, WY., & Bob (Theresa) McIntosh, of Montrose, MO.

His daughters – Angela (Chip) Sherman, of Kansas City, MO., & Mary (Scott) Oliver, of Dearborn, MO.

His brother – James (Norma) McIntosh, of Savannah, MO.

10 grandchildren, and 9 great-grandchildren.

LINDA SMITH, 76, of Atlantic, died Friday, Dec. 17, 2021, at Cass Health in Atlantic. A Celebration of Life Memorial service for LINDA SMITH will be held 11-a.m. Thursday, Dec. 23rd, at the Roland Funeral Home, in Atlantic. The service will be recorded and made available on the funeral home’s website by the end of the day, Thursday.

An open visitation will be held at the funeral home from 10-a.m. until 5:30-p.m. Wed., Dec 22nd. No visitation with the family planned.

Burial is in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Audubon, following a luncheon at the funeral home.

Memorials may be directed to the United Church of Christ and Hillside Hope Assembly in Atlantic.

LINDA SMITH is survived by:

Her sons – Brian (Jean Young) Smith, of Oakland, and Brent (Melinda) Smith, of Big Lake, MN.

Her brother – Leon (Judy) Thompson, of Audubon.

Her sister – Leigh Ann Lemberger, of Ottumwa.

4 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.

Council Bluffs man arrested late Saturday night in Montgomery County

(Red Oak, Iowa) – A traffic stop at around 11:15-p.m. Saturday, north of Red Oak, resulted in the arrest of a man from Council Bluffs. The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office reports 54-year-old David Michael Benkis was arrested on a Felony warrant out of Omaha, for Possession of a Dangerous Drug. Benkis was transported to the Montgomery County Jail. While at the jail, Deputies discovered Benkis was hiding a controlled substance (Methamphetamine) in his pants.

He was booked into the jail for bringing contraband into a correctional facility – A Class D Felony. Benkis remained in the jail while awaiting extradition to Omaha on his warrant.

Tonight: Mostly clear, with a low around 23. South southwest wind 10 to 14 mph, with gusts as high as 24 mph.

Monday: Sunny, with a high near 36. South southwest wind 6 to 14 mph becoming north in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 18 mph.

Tuesday: Sunny, with a high near 41. Breezy, with a south southeast wind 5 to 10 mph becoming southwest 11 to 16 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 24 mph.

Wednesday: Sunny, with a high near 39.

Saturday’s High in Atlantic was 27. Our Low this morning, was 10. Last year on this date the High in Atlantic was 30 and the Low was 22. The Record High on this date was 58 in 1966. The Record Low was -33 in 1983.

Hawkeyes pull away for win over Utah State in Sioux Falls

Keegan Murray poured in a career-high 35 points and led the Iowa Hawkeyes to a 94-75 win over Utah State on Saturday night. Murray scored 18 straight Hawkeye points spanning 6:08 in the first half and was 6 points away from setting an arena record. The Hawkeyes were playing the Aggies at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls, SD.

Kris Murray added a personal best 17 points. Iowa had two scoring runs that spanned at least 10-0 runs.

Iowa returns home on Tuesday hosting Southeastern Louisiana. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. (CT) on Mediacom Court at Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City, Iowa. Tickets are available for purchase at hawkeyesports.com/tickets.

Iowa women beat Central Florida

The No. 14 Iowa Hawkeyes defeated Central Florida, 69-61, at Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City on Saturday afternoon. Redshirt junior Kate Martin had a career high four steals and Caitlin Clark had her second double-double of the season and 11th of her career with 21 points and 11 rebounds.

Iowa improved to 6-2 overall with the win.

Up Next: Iowa returns to the court on Tuesday, Dec. 21, hosting Indiana University–Purdue University Indianapolis inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. CT on B1G+. The game is Ugly Sweater Day/Buck Night ($1 Tickets).
