ST. LOUIS (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals added pitching depth to their organization, signing right-hander Angel Castro to a one-year contract. The 31-year-old Castro is 4-3 with a 1.29 ERA in eight starts for Aguilas in the Dominican Winter League and the Cardinals had spots open on their 40-man roster. Fox spent the past six seasons as the assistant head coach under Creighton for the Bulldogs, who compete in the FCS. He also coached the offensive line and special teams.

Fox joined Creighton after serving as the offensive coordinator at Centre College (Ky.) from 1999-2007. Fox played at Wheaton College (Ill.) and served as the program’s offensive line coach and special teams coordinator before joining the staff at Centre College.

Drake went 44-22 with a pair of Pioneer Football League titles with Creighton in charge.

Depth fuels No. 23 Iowa to 10-1 start

Sports

December 11th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa coach Fran McCaffery’s solution to having 10 guys who can play has been to play them all. It has made the Hawkeyes one of the deepest and most dangerous teams in the country. No. 23 Iowa (10-1) heads into Friday night’s game at No. 17 Iowa State (7-0) with a rotation that’s the envy of opponents everywhere. The Hawkeyes have 10 players averaging at least 15 minutes per game, and they’re getting nearly half of their Big Ten-leading 89.5 points a game from their backups.

Iowa’s talented and experienced pool of reserves is a major reason why the Hawkeyes are fourth nationally with a scoring margin of plus-24.6 a game.

Ricks was shooting 45 percent from 3-point range for Drake, which has surged to a surprising 6-2 start. Ricks also scored 25 points for the Bulldogs in a win over Fresno State late last month.

Matheny is impressed with Peralta

Sports

December 11th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals hold their players to a high standard of conduct, and manager Mike Matheny is certain Jhonny Peralta will fit right in. The Cardinals’ new shortstop was suspended last summer along as part of Major League Baseball’s investigation into the Biogenesis clinic. Peralta served a 50-game drug suspension and returned to the Tigers at the end of the regular season.

Several players around the majors expressed anger when Peralta signed a $53 million, four-year contract with St. Louis in November. But Matheny sees a player who popular with his teammates and is working to make amends. “Been very proud just from the outside of him being part of our club now and watched how he’s handled this. He’s been very remorseful but taking it like a man. He made a mistake. This is what’s happened. Now I’d like to move on. And I get that,” Matheny said.
