Points-a-plenty for Chiefs defense, special teams

Sports

December 20th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs coach Andy Reid keeps track of what he calls “miscellaneous points.” Kansas City has a league-leading 11 touchdowns from defense and special teams with two games still to play in the regular season. That’s the third-most in NFL history.

Reid says that you don’t expect to score those touchdowns, “but you strive to get them.” And they’re a big reason why Kansas City is 11-3 and headed to the playoffs. The Chiefs host Indianapolis on Sunday.

DNR plans winter release of trout in 7 spots

Ag/Outdoor, Sports

December 19th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The Iowa Department of Natural Resources plans to release trout in seven spots around the state this winter. The program, which is financed by trout fishing fees, places the fish in areas where they couldn’t survive in warmer months. The trout will be released Jan. 10 in Fort Dodge’s Moorland Park and Big Lake West in Council Bluffs.

On Jan. 18, the fish will be released at Blue Pit in Mason City and Bacon Creek in Sioux City. Trout will be released Jan. 25 at Lake Petoka in Bondurant and at Spencer’s Scharnberg Pond. On Feb. 8, fish will be released at Ada Hayden Pond in Ames.

Anglers must have a fishing license and to have paid a trout fee.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Trevor Berkeley drilled his only 3-pointer of the game as Drake scored six points in the final 16 seconds to rally past Western Michigan 71-68 Wednesday night. Connar Tava hit a jumper with 52 seconds left, putting the Broncos (5-5) ahead for the tenth time in the seesaw game at 66-65. After a timeout, Berkeley hit his 3 with 16 seconds on the clock, Jordan Daniels made two free throws and Seth Van Deenst one. Tava missed a 3-pointer in the final second. Drake had trailed by as many as eight points after halftime.

The teams went through stretches of swapping the lead on each possession, with 20 lead changes and five ties. Jacob Enevold Jensen scored 16 points for Drake (7-3), Jordan Daniels added 14 with seven assists, and Chris Caird 10 points. David Brown led Western Michigan with 23 points, Tava added 16 and Shayne Whittington 15.

Hearing pushed back for Chiefs WR Dwayne Bowe

Sports

December 19th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

RIVERSIDE, Mo. (AP) — A municipal court hearing for Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Dwayne Bowe on speeding and marijuana possession citations has been rescheduled. Bowe’s lawyers, Kevin E.J. Regan, said through legal assistant Jennifer Purvis that the hearing has been moved from Wednesday to Jan. 22. Purvis says the office doesn’t plan to comment further.

Police in the Kansas City suburb of Riverside said Bowe was driving about 48 mph in a 35 mph zone when he was stopped Nov. 10. Police said an officer smelled “a strong odor of marijuana from inside of the vehicle” and found two containers holding what the officer suspected was marijuana.

Bowe previously apologized in a statement “for the distraction.” Chiefs coach Andy Reid has said he intends to let the legal situation run its course.

Group works to build baseball field for disabled

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) — Organizers of an effort to build a baseball field in Sioux City for people with physical and mental disabilities says they’re having success raising money for the project. Kevin Negaard, who leads the nonprofit Miracle League of Sioux City, told the City Council on Monday that the organization had raised about $175,000 in two weeks. The total cost is expected to be $400,000.

The Sioux City Journal reports the local Miracle League volunteers plan to build the field at Riverside Park. It will have a rubberized field and could be used by children and adults, including those who rely on wheelchairs. Similar fields have been built in Des Moines, Omaha, Neb., and Sioux Falls, S.D.

Negaard says he hopes the field will be open by fall of 2014.
