Spencer Lee to have season-ending surgery

The University of Iowa wrestling program announced Saturday that senior Spencer Lee will undergo surgery and miss the remainder of the 2021-22 season. The decision to have season-ending surgery was made collectively by Lee, his family, and the Iowa coaching staff and medical team.

Six players score in double figures for Drake women in win over Evansville

DES MOINES, IOWA – Six members of the Drake University women’s basketball team scored in double-digits to conquer Evansville, 97-54 on a snowy New Year’s Day in the Knapp Center.

The Bulldogs took the early lead and never looked back. The Aces tied the game in the first four minutes, 2-2, but were unable to come out on top. Entering halftime, Drake led 47-23.

All 13 of Drake’s players entered the game and all recorded a stat in at least one category. The Bulldogs tied a season high of 31 assists during their 40 minutes on the court and grabbed a season high 59 rebounds.

Freshman forward Anna Miller recorded her second career double-double to pace the Bulldogs. She tallied 13 points and nine rebounds in the first half alone. She finished with 16 points and a career high 14 rebounds.

The Bulldogs resume Valley play on Friday Jan. 7 in Chicago, as they take on Loyola.

Public Hearing on Atlantic Ward/Precinct divisions

(Atlantic, Iowa) – The City Council in Atlantic will hold a Special Meeting at Noon on Monday, Jan. 3rd, in the Council’s Chambers at City Hall. During their session, the Council will hold a Public Hearing on an Ordinance No. 1012 New Ward Map[110851] Amending the City Code…”by dividing the City into Five Wards and Five Precincts, and Outlining and Describing each Ward and Precinct, and Repealing Ordinance #934,” the populations for which were determined by the 2020 Census.

Cass County Auditor Dale Sunderman has completed the maps for both the districts for the Board of Supervisors and wards for the City Council.

The Council will hold the first reading of Ordinance #1012. In order for the new Ward map to be adopted, a simple majority of the Council (4 out of 7) must vote in favor following the first reading, before the other readings can be read and voted on. If approved, the Council will then act on an Order to waive the rules for the second and third readings, followed by action on approving both readings.

City Administrator John Lund says they were informed last Wednesday, Dec. 29th, that the new ward map ordinance would need to be adopted and submitted by the end of the day on Monday (Jan. 3). He recommends the Council adopt the map as presented.

  • Ward 4: 1,334
  • Ward 5: 1,310.

Late drive sends Kentucky to Citrus Bowl win over Iowa

Wan’Dale Robinson hauled in a 52 yard reception from Will Levis down to the Iowa 1 yard line with under three minutes left, setting up the winning touchdown for Kentucky in the Citrus Bowl Saturday. The Wildcats punched it in after a penalty pushed them back to the 6 yard line and the Wildcats hung on for a 20-17 win.

Iowa had one final chance to get down the field to tie or win the game but a Spencer Petras pass was intercepted by Deandre Square at the Kentucky 26 yard line, sealing the Wildcat win.

Levis finished the game 17-28 for 233 yards, 1 touchdown, and 1 interception. Robinson had 10 catches for 170 yards on the day. The Wildcats finished 10-3 on the season.

Petras finished 19-30 passing or 211 yards, 1 touchdown, and 3 interceptions. Sam LaPorta had 7 catches fro 122 yards and 1 score.

Iowa finishes the year at 10-4 and their streak of 15 straight wins against non-conference opponents was snapped. Iowa opens the 2022 season hosting South Dakota State on September 3rd at Kinnick Stadium.

Iowa State battles back but falls to No. 1 Baylor

A late 7-0 run gave Iowa State a chance against top-ranked Baylor but the Bears ultimately prevailed 77-72. Baylor led the entire game with the Cyclones staying within single digits a good chunk of the game.

It was 41-33 Baylor at halftime and the Bears had their biggest lead at 14 with 8:17 left. The Cyclones then went on a 7-0 run to get back in the game but could never get the big bucket to swing momentum fully.

The Cyclones outscored the Bears in the paint 44-28 but the Bears had the advantage in bench points 29-12. The Bears had four players finish in double figures with James Akinjo leading the way wiht 16. Baylor improved to 13-0.

Iowa State was led by 23 points from Tristan Enaruna and 18 from Izaiah Brockington. The Cyclones suffer their first loss of the season and are now 12-1.

Next up for the Cyclones is a Wednesday night home game against Texas Tech at 8:00 p.m.

BARBARA HANSEN, 85, of Harlan, died Thursday, Dec. 30th, at The Heritage at Fox Run. Funeral services for BARBARA HANSEN will be held at 11-a.m. Saturday, Jan. 8th, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Council Bluffs. Pauley-Jones Funeral Home in Harlan has the arrangements.

Visitation at the funeral home is on Jan. 7th, from 4-until 7-p.m., with a Prayer service at 6:30-p.m.

Burial is in the Harlan Cemetery.

BARBARA HANSEN is survived by:

Her daughter – Wendy (Joe) Finnell, of Atlantic.

Her sons – Timothy (Denell) Hansen, and David (Shelly) Hansen, all from Council Bluffs.

6 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.

Clarinda Snow Ordinance is now in effect

Motel struck by a pickup in Atlantic, Saturday

(Atlantic, Iowa) -A pickup struck two rooms of a motel in Atlantic, Saturday afternoon, but no one was injured. According to Atlantic Police Lt. Paul Wood, the accident happened at the A-Ford-O Motel on the west-central side of town, off 7th Street, at around 1:45-p.m.

An eastbound F250 pickup on Highway 6 driven by 24-year old Austin Boggs, of Lewis, went out of control, turned sideways, and slid into the entrance of rooms seven-and eight. The rooms were unoccupied at the time of the crash.

The accident remains under investigation.

Screech-Owl saved by ISP dispatcher and others

STORM LAKE, Iowa  — A Screech-Owl has been saved thanks to the quick thinking of an Iowa State Patrol dispatcher. According to the Iowa State Patrol, a Communications Specialist named Christian saw an owl get struck by a vehicle while driving into work. She “safely pulled over to check on the owl. It was severely injured, but still alive. Christian acted quickly, wrapping the animal in her coat and placing it safely inside a box.”With the help of another Communications Specialist named Jacee and ISP Trooper Mikkelsen, the owl was transported to a Certified Raptor Rehab Specialist in Sioux City.

According to the Iowa State Patrol, “the Screech Owl is healing well and lucky to be alive. Once it is strong enough, it will be released back into its natural habitat.”
