It’s the middle of winter but Iowa’s bicycling enthusiasts are already thinking about the summer ahead. The 10th annual Iowa Bicycle Summit will be held this weekend in Des Moines. Mark Wyatt, executive director of the Iowa Bicycle Coalition, says Friday is the first day of the gathering and it will feature guest speakers, an all-day workshop and breakout sessions on a host of bicycle-related topics.

“That’s our opportunity to have a lot of education,” Wyatt says. “It really focuses on community planning, bike lanes, bike facilities, trails, that sort of thing. We’re really excited because it’s really some of the best formal education communities are getting.” The other half of the weekend is the Iowa Bike Expo, a free event on Saturday featuring more than 100 exhibitors.

“You’re going to be able to see the latest bikes, gear, destinations, trails, events,” Wyatt says. “They’re all going to be at this expo. It’s a great time to come down and plan your summer vacation.” After the expo, there’s also the route announcement party for RAGBRAI, the Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa, on Saturday at 8 P-M. “That’s a ticketed event that happens in the ballroom at the Iowa Events Center,” Wyatt says. “A lot of fun will be had there but most of all, the evening caps off with the eight overnight towns announced.”

The National Federation of State High School (NFHS) Coaches Association has selected Nodaway Valley Coach Darrell Burmeister as its 2013 Central Sectional Coach of the Year in boys basketball. The Central section includes the states of Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan and Wisconsin. The NFHS recognizes coaches at the state, sectional, and national level.

All sectional coaches were considered for national coach of the year in their sport category, and those persons have been notified of their awards.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Peyton Manning’s foundation for at-risk youth will receive a $24,800 donation for all the times he shouted “Omaha!” during the AFC championship game Sunday. The donations were organized by the Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce after Manning’s 44 pre-snap “Omaha!” calls during the Denver Broncos win over San Diego received national attention.

Eight Omaha companies combined to donate $800 to Manning’s “Peyback Foundation” for every time he yelled the city’s name during the Broncos’ victory over the New England Patriots. The participating companies are ConAgra Foods, First National Bank of Omaha, Mutual of Omaha, Omaha Steaks, Cox Communications, CenturyLink, Union Pacific railroad and DJ’s Dugout Sports Bar & Grill.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Aaron White scored all of his 18 points in the second half and Josh Oglesby added a season-high 17 points as 14th-ranked Iowa blew past Minnesota 94-73 on Sunday. Devyn Marble had 15 of his 16 points after halftime for the surging Hawkeyes, who moved into third place in the Big Ten behind Michigan State and Michigan. Iowa (15-3, 4-1 Big Ten) overcame a 10-point deficit with a 29-10 run and outscored the Gophers 53-30 in the second half.

Andre Hollins had a game-high 20 points for Minnesota (14-5, 3-3). But Iowa held Hollins without a field goal in the second half in handing the Gophers their most lopsided loss of the season.

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Hallie Christofferson went more than 33 minutes between field goals Saturday and a Cyclone rally fell short as Kansas State posted an 80-74 win over No. 13 Iowa State Saturday night. Averaging 21.5 points in her last four Big 12 games, Christofferson’s first-half jumper gave the Cyclones a 5-2 lead, but by the time she scored her second, they trailed by 14. She finished 2 of 11 from the field.

Kansas State (8-9, 2-4 Big 12) got 27 points from Leticia Romero and 23 from Katya Leick to post its first win over the Cyclones in eight regular-season games. The Cyclones were just 20 of 59 from the field (33.9 percent) in Manhattan. Brynn Willliamson scored 17 points and Nicole Blaskowsky added another 16.

Iowa State, which now has lost three straight after starting the season with 14 consecutive wins, falling to No. 15 Oklahoma State and West Virginia at home.
