IOWA CITY, Iowa – The University of Iowa women’s wrestling team is set to host its first ever home dual inside of Carver Hawkeye Arena on Sunday, November 12 at 11 a.m. CT. The Hawkeyes will welcome Presbyterian, Lindenwood and Sacred Heart for the “Trailblazer Duals” presented by Riverside Casino and Golf Resort.

“Being within a 15-minute drive from Iowa City, Hawkeye Nation is part of our DNA and we are very excited about being the presenting sponsor of the Hawkeye women’s wrestling program and the upcoming Trailblazer Duals,” said Riverside Casino & Golf Resort General Manager Damon John. “Our customers are passionate about the Black and Gold, and any avenue to support new opportunities for girls and women is something that Riverside Casino & Golf Resort can get behind!”

The four schools competing are the first schools to have NCAA Division 1 women’s wrestling teams. Iowa announced in September 2021 it would become the first Division I Power Five school to add women’s wrestling.

“I am super excited for the opportunity to showcase women’s wrestling inside of Carver Hawkeye Arena,” said head coach Clarissa Chun. “Carver is such a historic place for the sport of wrestling and for our women to have the opportunity to put on the black and gold and compete will be unforgettable.”

Ticket information for the Trailblazer Duals will be released at a later date. The women’s wrestling full 2023-24 schedule will be released next week.

Treynor’s not looking past Missouri Valley game

Sports

October 11th, 2023 by Asa Lucas

The (6-1, 3-1) Treynor Cardinals sit almost locked in at the number 2 spot for District 8 and the playoffs. The Cardinals are coming off a resounding 40-9 victory over Shenandoah. It was after a crushing 49-0 defeat against Underwood. However, Head Coach Jeff Casey was proud of how his team responded in their game with Shenandoah.

Everything clicked for the Treynor offense and defense last Friday. Quarterback Ben Casey went 23-36, 213 yards, and 3 touchdowns. Running back Danny Kinsella had 14 carries, 51 yards, and a score.

The real highlight of the game was the defensive showing for Treynor. They forced 3 turnovers, scored a defensive touchdown, and only allowed 160 total yards. It was a showing that Coach Casey was pleased with.

Now the Cardinal’s eyes shift to the (1-6, 0-4) Missouri Valley Big Reds, a team that has struggled to find its rhythm. Even against a team that is winless in district play, Coach Casey isn’t overlooking the matchup.

Coach Casey wants to see consistency with his Treynor squad and to make sure the fundamentals are covered.

The Treynor and Missouri Valley matchup starts at 7:00 pm.

Iowa State’s T.J. Otzelberger at basketball Media Day

Sports

October 11th, 2023 by Asa Lucas

Iowa State basketball coach T.J. Otzelberger has a much younger team as he enters his third season at the helm. After hitting the transfer portal hard, the past two years six freshmen from a star-studded recruiting class are part of a team that will be in search of a third straight trip to the NCAA Tournament.

Defense will remain the identity of the program even though it may take a while for freshmen to adjust to that end of the court.

Otzelberger feels this team will be better offensively. The Cyclones averaged just under 68 points per game which was last in the Big-12.

Otzelberger feels the Cyclones will score more this season while remaining focused on defense and toughness.

The Cyclones open at home on November sixth against Wisconsin-Green Bay.
