Maggie Espenmiller-McGraw banked in a three pointer with four seconds remaining to give the ninth ranked Iowa State women the lead in a 73-70 win at 25th ranked Kansas State as the Cyclones closed the game on an 8-0 run.

The Cyclones connected on 12 of 23 from three point range.

The Cyclones led for only 18 seconds in the game as they improve to 4-0 in the Big 12.

Next up for the Cyclones is a road trip to Oklahoma State on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.

The UNI men’s basketball team picked up an exciting 80-74 overtime win over Indiana State on Tuesday night. Noah Carter had 17 points and AJ Green added 16 to lead the Panthers to their fourth straight win.

The Panthers trailed by as many as 17 in the second half before rallying to tie it. Green hit a mid-range jumper with 18 seconds left to send the game to overtime tied at 72. The Sycamores struggled through the extra session with foul trouble and mustered just one field goal.

The Panthers really helped themselves at the free throw line by going 23-25 for the game. UNI improved to 8-7 overall and 4-1 in the Valley.

The Iowa State men’s basketball team fought to the bitter end but came up a point shy of a rare road win at Allen Fieldhouse against Kansas 62-61. The Cyclones rallied back from a 9 point deficit in the second half to lead multiple times in a wild final two minutes.

Caleb Grill hit a shot from the corner that was ruled a two to put Iowa State up one with about 35 seconds left. Kansas got a foul call on the other end and went up one with two free throws before Izaiah Brockington nailed a go-ahead jumper for Iowa State with :18 left. Neither team called timeout in the final sequence and Kansas got a very tough banker from Dajuan Harris Jr. with 8 seconds left. The Cyclones got a look for Gabe Kalscheur from three that was off the mark and the ball was knocked out of bounds as time expired.

The Cyclones had some tough breaks in the second half with a flagrant foul that was called after a review on Robert Jones that seemed inadvertent and a missed goal-tending call on the Jayhawks.

Brockington finished with 17 points and 8 rebounds. Kalscheur dropped in 14pts and Tyrese Hunter added 12 points, 5 assists, and 5 steals.

The Cyclones drop to 13-3 overall and 1-3 in the Big 12. Next up for the Cyclones is a home game against Texas on Saturday at 1;00 p.m.

(Radio Iowa) – The former information director of the Iowa High School Athletic Association is the author of a new book. Bud Legg spent 35 years as a teacher, administrator, counselor and coach in Iowa schools in Oakland, South Hamilton and Ames. Legg, who was a single parent of five, says he took the title of his book from a nugget of advice his mother used to frequently share with him.

“Starting when I went to high school and every time I changed jobs, she always told me, ‘Now, Bud, remember to do your best and then some more,'” Legg says. “I talked to her later in life and asked her what she meant by the ‘some more’ and she said, ‘The opportunity that you have with people. You only get them once. Make them count, because you can never revisit it the same way.” The book is called, “Do Your Best and Then Some More.” Legg says the book, which was many years in the making, describes his philosophy on teaching and coaching.

“What I had outlined early as ten chapters became 19,” Legg says, “and then I started making some phone calls and reconnecting with some people and getting some information and it all came together.” The book reveals how Legg parlayed his small school experiences and participation in activities into a career in education and service to others in Iowa — and nationally. Legg says he started the book in 2014 to fulfill a promise to his late wife.

“I didn’t write every day. I didn’t write every month. Sometimes, I’d let it set for two months and look at it — and rewrite it,” Legg says. “I always thought writing ought to come pretty easy but writing a book is an experience.” Legg has served as a football and softball official and has done reports for a number of Iowa radio and television stations.
