Wacha workload not a concern for Cardinals

Sports

February 25th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

JUPITER, Fla. (AP) – The Cardinals are not putting a limit on the workload for young pitching star Michael Wacha. Pitching coach Derek Lilliquist says there’s no reason to. Wacha pitched 170 innings last year and his coach says he could be a 200-inning guy this year. Wacha’s readiness became more important this weekend after Jaime Garcia returned to St. Louis to have his surgically repaired shoulder examined.

Last season, only Adam Wainwright and Lance Lynn eclipsed the 200-inning mark for the Cardinals. Shelby Miller exceeded 170 innings as a rookie, but the team slowed him down.

Juco DL Taylor signs with Iowa State

Sports

February 24th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

AEMS, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State has signed junior college defensive lineman and former four-star recruit Trent Taylor to a letter of intent. Taylor, a 6-foot-2, 250-pounder out of Lakeland Florida, will be eligible to play as a junior next season.

Taylor signed with Tennessee out of high school but played just one game for the Volunteers. He spent last season at Butler Community College in Kansas and had three sacks and 10 tackles for loss.

Taylor was a first-team Class 6A selection by The Associated Press in 2011.

Iowa’s McCaffery tells players to get off Twitter

Sports

February 24th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa coach Fran McCaffery has instructed the Hawkeyes to shut down their Twitter accounts for the rest of the season after senior Zach McCabe exchanged barbs with detractors on the social media service. McCabe air-balled a 3-pointer that could have tied the game with 16 seconds left against Wisconsin on Saturday. The 20th-ranked Hawkeyes went on to lose 79-74.

McCabe responded to negative comments directed at him on Twitter by lashing out at his critics after the game. McCabe deleted the post and apologized. McCaffery says his overall impressions of social media are negative and that he’d prefer his players keep their focus on Iowa’s upcoming games. He said his players are free to resume tweeting once the season is over.

Northern Iowa powers past Illinois State 72-59

Sports

February 23rd, 2014 by Ric Hanson

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) — Seth Tuttle scored 18 points, on 6-of-10 shooting, to lead Northern Iowa to a 72-59 win over Illinois State on Sunday. Northern Iowa (14-14, 8-8 Missouri Valley Conference) opened with a 10-0 run to build a lead that was never challenged, taking a 40-24 advantage into the break and then protecting it in the second half.

Matt Bohannon contributed 14 points, Nate Buss added 13 and Jeremy Morgan 10 for the Panthers, who avenged a Feb. 8 loss to Illinois State and moved back into a third place tie with the win. Tuttle, who was 6 of 6 from the free throw line, also had nine rebounds. Illinois State (15-13, 8-8) outscored the Panthers 35-32 in the second half but couldn’t erase the 16-point halftime deficit.

Zach Lofton led the Redbirds with a career-high 24 points, while Reggie Lynch added 10 in the loss.

No. 3 Wichita St tops Drake 83-54 to go to 29-0

Sports

February 23rd, 2014 by Ric Hanson

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) – Tekele Cotton had 21 points, Darius Carter came off the bench to score 15 and No. 3 Wichita State pounded Drake 83-54 Saturday night. Wichita State (29-0, 16-0 Missouri Valley Conference) is the first team to start 29-0 since Illinois in 2004-05 and is two wins away from a perfect regular season.

Fred VanVleet scored 15 for the Shockers, who cut down the nets after the game to celebrate their Missouri Valley championship. Daddy Ugbede scored 14 points, Jordan Daniels had 13 and Aaron Hawley 10 for Drake (14-14, 5-11), which had more turnovers (20) than field goals (18).

In the deciding portion of the game, only halftime provided the Bulldogs some respite. Wichita State wrapped a 31-4 run around the break, an onslaught so complete that the Shockers completed the 14-1 portion to start the second half without Drake even attempting a field goal.
