The Atlantic Flying Sharks swim team, representing the Nishna Valley Family YMCA in Atlantic, competed in the State YMCA Meet in Marshalltown last weekend with great results and set some records in the process.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Wichita State sophomore Fred VanVleet has been voted the Missouri Valley player of the year, leading a strong showing by the unbeaten Shockers in the league’s postseason awards. VanVleet received 22 of a possible 36 votes cast by coaches, athletic department officials and the media on Tuesday, easily outdistancing teammates Cleanthony Early and Ron Baker. It’s the first time in the award’s history that a school swept the top three spots.
VanVleet, Baker and Early were joined on the all-Missouri Valley first team by Evansville’s D.J. Balentine, Jake Odum of Indiana State and Seth Tuttle of Northern Iowa. Wichita State’s Tekele Cotton was voted second-team all-conference, while Darius Carter made the all-newcomer team. Cotton and VanVleet were picked for the all-defensive team.

Tournament play looks just like the regular season for Burlington Notre Dame. The state’s highest scoring team completed the opening day of the Class 1A tournament with a 90-50 victory over Adair-Casey, the fourth time the Nikes have reached 80 or more points in as many postseason games. Taylor Hickey scored 27 points to lead third-ranked Notre Dame, which shot 58 percent from the field and easily topped its season scoring average of 81.7 points. Riley Kilbride added 16 points for the Nikes and Courtney Coffin scored 10.
Notre Dame harassed Adair-Casey throughout with its full-court press and traps, came up with 18 steals and scored 34 points off turnovers. The Nikes improved to 22-3 and will play No. 2 Janesville in the semifinals at 10 a.m. Thursday. London Vais led eighth-ranked Adair-Casey with 23 points and 10 rebounds. Zoey Dinkla and Shelby Sorensen each scored six for the Bombers, who finish 23-4 after the school’s second state tourney trip.
The 23 victories are a school record in the five-player era. Adair-Casey trailed by 15 midway through the second quarter, then started taking better care of the ball and drew to 33-26 in the closing seconds of the first half. But any hopes the Bombers had of taking some momentum into halftime ended when Hickey sank two free throws, then scored on a drive after a turnover just before the buzzer.
That mini-surge became an 18-0 run when Notre Dame began the second half with 14 straight points to make it 51-26. The Nikes held Adair-Casey to three field goals in the third quarter and led 74-37 heading into the final period.
LAKELAND, Fla. (AP) – Jhonny Peralta homered twice against his former team, going deep in his only plate appearances Monday in the St. Louis Cardinals’ 8-5 loss to the Detroit Tigers. Peralta played for the Tigers for three and a half seasons before signing with St. Louis as a free agent this offseason. He said Cardinals manager Mike Matheny asked a couple days earlier if he wanted to make the spring training trip to Lakeland to face Detroit. Peralta accepted that offer – then made his visit worthwhile with two solo homers off left-hander Drew Smyly.
Nick Castellanos homered for the Tigers. Castellanos, Miguel Cabrera, Victor Martinez and Austin Jackson had two hits apiece. Detroit, which played a 10-inning scoreless tie against Atlanta on Sunday, scored seven runs in the first three innings Monday.
Renee Maneman’s passing and solid all-around play keyed another state tournament victory for Newell-Fonda, Monday, in Des Moines. Maneman tied the tournament record with 13 assists and teammates Claudia Larson and Hailey Falline each scored 16 points as the top-ranked Mustangs rolled past Bedford 73-37 to reach the Class 1A semifinals. Maneman also had 13 points, seven steals and six rebounds as part of an impressive performance by the Mustangs, whose sharp passing created numerous open shots. Of their 32 field goals, 26 came on assists.
Newell-Fonda also came up with 15 steals and no starter played more than 21 minutes. Maneman left the game shortly after tying the assist record with a pass to Brianna Wells, who made a 3-pointer with 7:19 left. Wells finished with 10 points.
Maneman now shares the assists record with Cedar Rapids Jefferson’s Tara Hupfeld, who did it against Solon in 1993, and Davenport Assumption’s Gabbi Binion, who had 13 against Unity Christian in 2008. Emily Weed led Bedford with 12 points and Fallyn Beemer scored nine.
Newell-Fonda will take a 23-2 record into a semifinal game against fourth-ranked Colo-NESCO at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday. The Mustangs are in the tournament for the fourth time in the last five years and are seeking their first title after runner-up finishes in 1997, 2000, 2008 and last year. Bedford, which made it to state for the third in in four years, finishes 17-8.
