IHSAA Golf Update

Sports

October 17th, 2024 by Asa Lucas

The transition of golf seasons for Classes 3A, 2A, and 1A was discussed for the third consecutive meeting, with action taken Thursday to postpone any change in golf seasons for the foreseeable future.

The IHSAA and IGHSAU had announced in August a move for girls’ tennis and all boys’ golf classes to be played in the fall starting in 2025-26. However, the Board of Control voted to delay the boys’ golf change indefinitely, so the sport will remain in the spring for 2025-26 and until the board considers additional information.

“We considered the feedback from our member schools and the board ultimately decided it was worth reconsidering our initial vote,” said board chairperson Dr. Andy Crozier, superintendent at Central Lee. “It became clear that there were too many obstacles that need to be resolved in the short-term to make this change for the 2025-26 school year.”

The change was announced in August as a way to reduce spring schedule congestion for school activities and improve the student-athlete golf experience.

Since then, the IHSAA’s numerous committees and school feedback structures often cited challenges with small school participation in fall sports, coaching conflicts, and golf course availability.

Discussions among the board on Thursday turned the golf seasons from a discussion item to an action item and resulted in a 5-3 vote to delay moving the sport out of the spring at this time.

Class 4A boys’ golf will remain in the fall, where it has been exclusively since 1993 and concluded its championships Tuesday.

“We appreciate our Board’s desire to continue its due diligence as it more fully considers a possible move of Class 1A, 2A, and 3A golf to a fall season,” IHSAA executive director Tom Keating said.  “We will continue to provide them with whatever information they need regarding the impact on and perspective of our member schools.”

Drake basketball Media Day

Sports

October 17th, 2024 by Ric Hanson

New Drake basketball coach Ben McCollum says getting the right fit was a focus as he rebuilt the Bulldog roster. Only two players return from last years team that won a second straight Missouri Valley Tournament title in the final season under former coach Darian DeVries.

Among the key newcomers is six-seven junior college transfer Tavion Banks. McCollum says Banks has made big steps since it was discovered he was having trouble with his eyesight.

McCollum says the biggest chore in his new job was putting together a schedule. Drake released its non-conference schedule on Wednesday and is still short a game.

They open at home on Monday, November fourth against York College of Nebraska.

Iowa State’s Rocco Becht previews Central Florida

Sports

October 17th, 2024 by Ric Hanson

Iowa State quarterback Rocco Becht says the ninth ranked Cyclones are not soaking up the national attention they are receiving with an unbeaten start. They look to go 7-0 for the first time since 1938 Saturday night by hosting Central Florida.

Becht says the Cyclones have done a good job of staying grounded.

Becht says a key for the Cyclones has been balance on both sides of the ball. It begins with a defense that is ranked fifth in the country in points allowed.

Iowa offense previews Michigan State

Sports

October 17th, 2024 by Ric Hanson

It will be a final game against Michigan State for Iowa quarterback Cade McNamara when the teams collide in East Lansing Saturday night. McNamara played the Spartans when he was at Michigan and last years suffered a season ending knee injury early in a Hawkeye win in Kinnick Stadium.

Iowa is coming off its most complete effort of the season in a 40-16 win over Washington and McNamara says it started in practice last week.

McNamara says the wide receivers are making progress. Redshirt freshman Dayton Howard had his first catch and his first touchdown against the Huskies.

A year ago as a true freshman Howard was on the scout team.

Depth has been a factor in Iowa’s improved play along the offensive line. Tyler Elsbury stepped in at guard last week when Beau Stephens went down with an ankle injury and center Logan Jones says Elsbury’s versatility is a plus.

Iowa State’s Beau Freyler talks UCF

Sports

October 17th, 2024 by Ric Hanson

Iowa State safety Beau Freyler says the Cyclones are not focused on the big picture as they get ready to host Central Florida. Ninth ranked ISU is 6-0 and firmly established as a Big 12 title and playoff contender.

The Cyclone defense is one of the nation’s best but Freyler says they can still do a better job of starting faster.

UCF has an outstanding rushing attack but the Knights have struggled in the red zone. Freyler says the Cyclones need to be ready for some different looks.

CAM Volleyball Improving in Weeks before Postseason

Sports

October 17th, 2024 by Christian Adams

The CAM Volleyball team is continuing to improve as they make their way toward the postseason. Currently, the Cougars have 7-17 record but managed to finish regular season conference play with a 4-4 record earning them the number five seed at the conference tournament this weekend. They also hosted a tournament last weekend in which the team picked up two wins before falling to a very talented Riverside team. Co-head Coach Hilary Zimmerline says she’s been proud of how the team has come together and that it helped earn them some wins.

Heading into the postseason, the defense has been an area in which CAM has excelled.  They have three players in the conference’s top 10 in digs and top 5 in blocks. Junior Krista James leads the Rolling Valley conference with 36 blocks. Coach Zimmerline said all that was needed was a little bit of shuffling to but her players in the best position to succeed.

In volleyball, passing and serve-receiving are some of the most important areas of a team’s game. Without a solid serve receive and a good first pass a team will constantly be behind the eight-ball. Zimmerline thinks that this CAM’s most improved part of the game heading into the playoffs. She also thought her senior Maddie Richter (who is new to the game) has found her niche as she currently ranks second in the conference with 287 digs.

When reflecting on the season as a whole it is clear the fondness Zimmerline has for this hardworking team as she said she thoroughly enjoyed watching this group come together.

CAM will take on Woodbine in the first round of the Rolling Valley Conference Tournament this Saturday before heading to their Class 1A Region 8 playoff game against Exira-EHK next week.

Tigers to Visit Spartans in Regular Season Finale

Sports

October 17th, 2024 by Christian Adams

The Griswold Tigers Football Team will visit the Exira-EHK Spartans to wrap up the regular season on Friday night. The Tigers are playing much improved from the early part of the season winning two of their last three games. This includes wins over Stanton and West Harrison/Whiting while just barely dropping a two-point contest to East Mills. In their most recent win over West Harrison/Whiting, they got off to a fast start and scored a season-high 66 points. Head Coach Seth Lembke credited the success to their ability to finish scoring chances and the improved play in the trenches.

In each of the last three weeks, the Tigers’ offense has been nearly unstoppable, scoring over 50 points per game. In addition to talented receivers Auden Wilson and Connor Bowers, senior quarterback Bode Wyman has been a big reason why. Wyman has thrown for over 1300 yards and 18 touchdowns this season. Lembke says that Wyman’s ability to spread the ball around and read plays has been key for the Tigers’ offense.

Exira-EHK will be no easy foe for Griswold. Quarterback Bryce Brabham has rushed for 875 yards and 10 touchdowns this season. Despite being experienced with facing quarterbacks like Brabham, Lembke knows his defense will need to be even better if they are going to stop the Spartans’ offense.

With the playoffs likely out of reach for the Tigers, this final game still has a lot of meaning to the Griswold football program. Lembke stated that finishing on a high note is important to him and his players.

You can catch all the Action on KJAN with pregame coverage starting at 6:30 pm.
