Molina’s homerun helps Cardinals win on opening day

Sports

March 31st, 2014 by admin

CINCINNATI (AP) – Yadier Molina’s homer broke a seventh-inning tie and drew another round of loud boos while he rounded the bases on Monday, leading the St. Louis Cardinals to a 1-0 victory over the Cincinnati Reds.

The Reds were blanked on opening day for the first time since 1953, ending the second-longest streak of scoring in at least one run in season openers in major league history. The Phillies went 62 years without being blanked in an opener from 1911-72.

Adam Wainwright used his refined sinker to finally get the best of the Reds, who have hit him like no other team. Wainwright allowed three hits in seven innings, fanning nine.

St. Louis escaped a threat in the eighth. Trevor Rosenthal retired all three batters in the ninth, finishing a three-hitter for the defending National League champions.

Sports

March 30th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

CINCINNATI (AP) – No waiting for one of the NL Central’s longstanding rivalries to resume. The defending NL champion St. Louis Cardinals and the Cincinnati Reds open the season against each other on Monday for only the second time in the last 20 years. The Cardinals won the season series 11-8 last year and held off the Reds, who had to settle for a wild card. They lost the one-game playoff in Pittsburgh and fired manager Dusty Baker.

The Cardinals are stocked for another title run. The Reds open the season with eight players on the disabled list, including starter Mat Latos, closer Aroldis Chapman and catcher Devin Mesoraco.   Adam Wainwright, who won 19 games and finished second in the NL Cy Young voting last season, faces Cincinnati’s Johnny Cueto.

Cards’ exhibition against Triple-A team rained out

Sports

March 29th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) – The scheduled exhibition game between the St. Louis Cardinals and their Triple-A Memphis farm club has been rained out.  A near-capacity crowd of 13,000 had been expected Friday night at AutoZone Park in Memphis for what would have been the Cardinals’ first game there since 2009. The team did take batting practice and players such as outfielder Matt Holliday and infielder Matt Carpenter stopped on the dugout steps to sign autographs for fans.

The grounds crew placed the tarp on the field about 40 minutes before the scheduled start, and rain began falling soon afterward. Thunder and lightning followed and there was standing water on the warning track when the game was canceled.  Joe Kelly, who was 10-5 with a 2.69 ERA last season, had been scheduled to start for St. Louis. The Cardinals open the season Monday afternoon in Cincinnati.

The Cardinals announced they will schedule an exhibition game against the Memphis Redbirds at AutoZone Park next season.

NEW YORK (AP) – DeAndre Daniels scored 27 points, 19 in the second half, and UConn held off Iowa State 81-76 on Friday to reach the East Regional final a year after the Huskies were barred from the NCAA tournament.

The Cyclones rallied late, pulling within 67-63 with 2 1/2 minutes remaining. But senior Niels Giffey hit a 3 in the corner for his first points since the game’s opening moments, and when the Huskies (29-8) made their free throws in the final minute, the UConn fans packing Madison Square Garden could celebrate.

Dustin Hogue scored a career-high 34 points for third-seeded Iowa State (28-8).

Cardinals close deal to buy Triple-A Memphis team

Sports

March 28th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) – The St. Louis Cardinals now own their top minor-league team. The Cardinals on Friday closed on the purchase of the Triple-A Memphis Redbirds. As part of the deal, the city of Memphis, Tenn., acquires AutoZone Park and will lease the stadium to the Cardinals. Both are buying from Fundamental Advisors LP, the sole bondholder of the Memphis Redbirds Baseball Foundation.  Financial terms were not disclosed. Plans for the purchase were first announced late last year.

The Cardinals say the purchase agreement includes a significant investment in AutoZone Park, but did not elaborate.  The Memphis franchise has had financial struggles in recent years. The team drew more than 800,000 fans when the stadium opened in 2000, but has drawn fewer than 500,000 in recent seasons.
