UNI hosts Drake Saturday afternoon

UNI and Drake renew their Missouri Valley Conference rivalry Saturday afternoon in the McLeod Center. Both teams are looking to bounce back from Wednesday night losses. The Panthers fell in overtime at Valparaiso Wednesday night and were without leading scorer AJ Green due to COVID protocols. Drake lost at home to Bradley. The Bulldogs are 4-2 in the Missouri Valley.

Drake’s emergence under Darian DeVries has elevated the rivalry.

DeVries says the games with UNI always have added interest.

DeVries says the Panther’s balance is a concern.

DeVries expects an electric atmosphere in the McLeod Center.

SW IA man arrested on Burglary charges

(Mount Ayr, Iowa) – Sheriff’s officials in Ringgold County report a man was arrested Wednesday afternoon, for Felony Burglary, and Possession of Burglary Tools. Authorities say Ringgold County Dispatch was notified by a resident that his surveillance cameras caught someone allegedly trying to break into his home. A deputy responded to search the property and outbuildings. After finding a footprint in the snow, the suspect, later identified as 27-year-old Wyatt Robert James Schamp, of Ellston, was tracked through the surrounding fields until the footprint was lost on the road.
A short time later, an anonymous caller reported that an individual was walking south down Highway 169, by the school. The description given of the individual matched that of a picture posted on social media. Contact was made with Schamp, and when questioned, he admitted to being at the residence of the reporter caller. Schamp was then taken into custody on the aforementioned charges.
He was transported to the Ringgold County Jail and held on a $7,000 cash-only bond.

ERIC WALTON, 45, of Walnut, died Wed., Jan. 19th, at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics. Funeral services for ERIC WALTON will be held at 2-p.m. on (Saturday) January 29th, in the Walnut Community Center, in Walnut. Pauley-Jones Funeral Home in Avoca has the arrangements.

A public visitation will be held at the Walnut Community Center from 10-am until 2-p.m., on January 29th.

ERIC WALTON is survived by:

His mother & father -Mary [Meyer] Walton & Clarence “Butch” Walton, both of Walnut.

His wife – Shyla Walton, of Walnut.

His daughter – Emma Jade Walton, of Omaha.

Shyla’s sons – Westley (Kimber) English, of Denver, CO., & Alexander (Cryssy) English, of LaVergne, TN.

His brothers – Marcus (Deanna) Walton, of Coconut Creek, FL., & Reid Walton (& partner Jeni Calhoun), of Harlan.

His nieces – Eva & Bailey Walton, of Harlan, and Shyla’s 3 grandchildren.

Iowa’s record 2022 corn harvest spurs rail car surge

(Radio Iowa) – Iowa’s record 2021 corn harvest led to a significant increase in traffic on the rail lines that run through Iowa. “The car loads of grain in 2021 were the most since 2008. This is mostly due to the high volumes that were being exported. That’s a great spot for our state here in Iowa.” That’s Iowa D-O-T director Scott Marler, who says railroad traffic nationwide increased seven percent in 2021, but has not rebounded to pre-pandemic levels.

Marler says the volume of cars and trucks on Iowa streets and highways dropped over 40 percent at the beginning of the pandemic. “Our traffic levels are pretty much back to pre-pandemic levels, but they’re different than what they used to be,” Marler says. “…In our cities and urban areas, we’re still seeing a slightly depressed amount of traffic volumes. We think this might be one of the trends from teleworking that we hear about. In our rural areas, by contrast, our traffic levels are actually a little higher than pre-pandemic levels.”

Marler says that’s likely because of the high volume of trucks carrying freight on Iowa highways and interstates. Passenger traffic at Iowa airports that offer commercial flights dropped significantly during the first year of the pandemic and Marler says it’s bouncing back.  “We’re not back to pre-pandemic levels with passenger counts at our eight commercial service airports, but we’re close,” he says, “within about 10-15% of pre-pandemic levels.”

Marler made his comments during a briefing yesterday (Thursday) for the Iowa House Transportation Committee.

Grand View Christian proves too much for Atlantic boys

The Class 1A top-ranked Grand View Christian Thunder proved too much for Atlantic to handle in boys hoops on Thursday night at Faith Baptist Bible College in Ankeny. After the Trojans went bucket for bucket with the Thunder through 1 1/2 quarters, Grand View Christian hit the gas and pulled away for a 96-68 win. The game was tied at 24 at the end of the first, and it was an 8-point Thunder lead at half. The Thunder erupted for a 31-12 advantage in the third to take control. Atlantic Head Coach Derek Hall said the team got a little gassed after a good start.

William Penn recruit Manny Hammonds and his fellow backcourt mate Josh Baucum were tough to slow down. Hammonds finished with 30 points on the night and Baucum added 29. The Thunder stay unbeaten at 15-0. They will travel to West Marshall on Friday. Coach Hall said it was great experience to play a great team like Grand View Christian.

Atlantic got 15 points each from Dayton Templeton, Colton Rasmussen, and Carter Pellett. The Trojans fall to 3-11 on the season. They will travel to Creston for their next game on Monday.

Atlantic girls rally for win over Grand View Christian

After a dismal third quarter the Atlantic girls basketball team rallied in the fourth to pick up a 46-43 win over Grand View Christian on Thursday night in Ankeny. The Trojans trailed by three at half and only managed 2 points in the third quarter to fall behind by 10 at 41-31. The Trojans chipped away at the lead, with Jada Jensen leading the way with 10 points in the period. Atlantic Head Coach Dan Vargason thought the Trojans’ press and zone paid off down the stretch.

Jensen finished the night with 20 points and Aubrey Guyer added 12. The Trojans had a chance to fully ice the game with free throws in the final minute but couldn’t get that one extra point to make it a two possession game. It didn’t matter as the Thunder didn’t have enough time to get a shot off after Paytn Harter’s freebie miss with 2 seconds left. Coach Vargason was really proud of the fight the team showed, overcoming a couple tough stretches of the game.

Atlantic improves to 6-10 on the season. Next up for the Trojans is a home tilt with Shenandoah next Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. We’ll have that game on KJAN.

No. 25 Iowa women win at Minnesota

The 25th ranked Hawkeye women outscored Minnesota 37-12 in the third quarter to blow the game open in a 105-49 win in the Twin Cities. Caitlin Clark had 35 points, 13 rebounds and 11 assists.

The Hawkeyes connected on 59 percent, including nine of 17 from three point range. Iowa coach Lisa Bluder.

The deficit was the worse loss in program history for Minnesota. The Hawkeyes improved to 11-4 overall and 5-1 in the Big Ten.
