Former Iowa District 3 Representative David Young is running for the seat once again this year and made a stop at KJAN on Friday as he hit the campaign trail. Young provided his thoughts on a number of current major issues and said he has been getting good response from constituents in the district.

COVID-19 and the ensuing economic impact has been a major focus around the globe and Young said it is a public health issue that should be taken seriously. He said he hopes further steps are made by congress to help those most impacted financially and to aid in getting the economy back on track. Young said one of his first priorities in office would be to make sure health necessities can be produced here at home.

The Ag Economy has also been widely impacted by COVID-19 and Young said there is some help coming the way of farmers across the country. He said a good planting season certainly helped and he’s optimistic about the bounce back.

Racial issues and Police brutality have been brought to the forefront of the country conversation following the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis and Young gave his thoughts on the situation.

Young said he looks forward to continuing the campaign and drawing differences between himself and his opponent Cindy Axne.

Young went on to visit Red Oak, Shenandoah, and Gravity on Friday.

Bagged “Garden Salad” from Hy-Vee, ALDI & Jewel-Osco Stores may be contaminated

News

June 20th, 2020 by Ric Hanson

The FDA, along with CDC and state and local partners today (Saturday), said they are “investigating a multistate outbreak of Cyclospora infections potentially linked to ALDI, Hy-Vee, and Jewel-Osco grocery store brand “garden salads” containing iceberg lettuce, red cabbage, and carrots. This applies only to the store brand salads labeled as “garden salads” and not for other types of store brand packaged salads sold at these retailers.”

FDA and CDC are recommending that consumers should not eat, and restaurants and retailers should not sell or serve all ALDI Little Salad Bar Brand Garden Salad sold in Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota, and Missouri, all Hy-Vee Brand Garden Salad sold in Iowa, Illinois, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, and Nebraska, and Jewel-Osco Signature Farms Brand Garden Salad sold in Illinois.

Case Counts – Total Illnesses: 76
Hospitalizations: 16
Deaths: 0
Illness Onset Date Range: 5/11/2020 – 6/14/2020
States with Cases: IA (28), IL (23), KS (1), MN (10), MO (7), NE (7)

Although the investigation is ongoing, CDC’s analysis of epidemiologic information indicates that these bagged salads from ALDI, Hy-Vee and Jewel-Osco grocery stores are a likely cause of the illnesses. FDA has initiated a traceback investigation to determine supplier and distributor information to find the cause and source of the outbreak.

FDA is in the beginning stages of this investigation and there may be additional retailers and products impacted by this outbreak. As this outbreak investigation continues, the FDA will provide additional updates to this advisory as more information becomes available.
