Iowa State football coach Paul Rhoads is known for his emotional speeches and he had to prepare another one, on Thursday. Rhoads addressed a luncheon in West Des Moines to promote next month’s “A Ride to Remember” motorcycle event which raises money for the Alzheimer’s Association. It is a cause that is personal to the coach. Rhoads says being involved with the Alzheimer’s Association and meeting people affected by the disease is part of the healing process for him. His mother had the disease and passed away in 2011.

The ride begins at Jack Trice Stadium on June 22nd. It will be the fifth year Rhoads has hosted the event which began with 50 bikes. Rhoads says he is pleased with how quickly the event has grown and remembers being shock whe he saw the number of motorcycles in the parking lot a couple of years ago.

It costs 35 dollars per person to take part in the ride.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs have signed third-round draft pick Phillip Gaines. The cornerback out of Rice became the third of the Chiefs’ six draft picks to sign their contracts when he agreed to a deal Thursday. Sixth-round picks Zach Fulton and Laurent Duvernay-Tardif, both offensive lineman, had already signed their contracts. Terms of the contracts have not been disclosed.

That leaves only defensive end Dee Ford, the No. 23 overall pick, fourth-rounder De’Anthony Thomas and fifth-round pick Aaron Murray to sign their contracts. Gaines played in 52 games for Rice, intercepting four passes and piling up a school-record 38 passes defensed. He served as a captain for the Owls his final two seasons.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — NASCAR Nationwide points leader Chase Elliott will juggle school and racing for the final time this weekend. The 18-yeard-old Elliott will graduate from King’s Ridge Christian School in Alpharetta, Georgia, on Saturday morning and fly straight to Iowa for a qualifying session just 10 hours later.

Elliott says that while he’s excited to focus solely on racing, he also appreciated how school helped balance his life. Elliott headlines the list of Nationwide regulars set to race on Sunday at Iowa Speedway.

NEW YORK (AP) – St. Louis Cardinals chairman Bill DeWitt will chair a succession committee to determine the process for selecting a replacement to baseball Commissioner Bud Selig. Chicago White Sox chairman Jerry Reinsdorf also is on the panel, which includes Colorado chairman Dick Monfort, Philadelphia president Dave Montgomery, Los Angeles Angels owner Arte Moreno, Pittsburgh chairman Bob Nutting and Minnesota chief executive officer Jim Pohlad.

Selig, who plans to retire in January, sidestepped a question of whether he would remain as commissioner emeritus.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals game against the Chicago Cubs Wednesday, was postponed due to rain. The game will be made up on Saturday, Aug. 30, as part of a day-night split doubleheader. The teams split the first two games of the series. The Cardinals won 4-3 Tuesday night when pinch hitter Greg Garcia was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the 12th inning and the Cubs won 17-5 on Monday.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals have recalled second baseman Kolten Wong from Triple-A Memphis after a four-hit, four-RBI game in the minors. Infielder Greg Garcia was optioned to Memphis on Wednesday. Garcia was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the 12th inning Tuesday night for the game-winning run against the Cubs, also his first career RBI.

The 23-year-old Wong opened the season as the Cardinals’ starting second baseman. He was batting .225 when he was demoted April 27. At Memphis, he hit .344 with two home runs and 10 RBIs in 15 games with five steals in five attempts. He was 4 for 5 against Round Rock on Tuesday.

Veteran Mark Ellis has been starting at second since Wong was optioned and was batting .190 with seven RBIs in 63 at-bats.
