ST. LOUIS (AP) — Michael Wacha escaped a pair of jams with strikeouts, and the St. Louis Cardinals snapped a fifth-inning tie en route to a 5-2 victory over the New York Mets on Tuesday night. Yadier Molina hit his first homer since May 24 for the Cardinals, who have won eight of nine and will go for a three-game sweep on Wednesday. David Wright hit his first homer since May 28, and Lucas Duda also connected for the Mets, who have lost 11 of 14.
Mets manager Terry Collins batted the pitcher eighth with Eric Young Jr. hitting ninth for the second straight game in an effort to stimulate the offense. During the 14-game slump, the Mets have scored two or fewer runs seven times. Daisuke Matsuzaka worked a scoreless seventh inning in relief of Mets starter Jonathon Niese.
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A string of underwhelming NCAA tournament performances obscured the fact that the Big 12 was perhaps the best league in the country in 2013-14. A flurry of moves in the past two months should help keep the Big 12 stocked with talent next season.
Texas recently signed the nation’s top remaining recruit in forward Myles Turner. League champion Kansas added point guard Devonte Graham following the departure of Naadir Tharpe last month. Iowa State replaced DeAndre Kane with another one-and-done senior, former UNLV star Bryce Dejean Jones.
It’s no coincidence that the Longhorns, Jayhawks and Cyclones will be among the favorites in a conference that should again be loaded in 2014-15.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) – Walker Buehler pitched 5 1-3 innings of no-hit relief, and John Norwood drove in the go-ahead run and another for insurance in Vanderbilt’s 6-4 win over UC Irvine at the College World Series on Monday night. Buehler took over for struggling first-round draft pick Tyler Beede and helped move Vanderbilt within one win of the CWS championship round. The Commodores (48-19) will play in a bracket final Friday against the winner of a Wednesday elimination game between UC Irvine (41-24) and Texas.
Buehler (12-2) retired the first nine batters he faced and finished with seven strikeouts in only his third relief appearance of the year. Only two balls were hit out of the infield against him. Norwood’s bases-loaded sacrifice fly in the fifth inning put Vanderbilt up 5-4, and his two-strike, two-out single in the seventh made it a two-run game.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) – Parker French and Travis Duke limited Louisville to four hits, and Texas manufactured runs in three straight innings to beat the Cardinals 4-1 in a College World Series elimination game Monday. The Longhorns (44-20) ended a four-game CWS losing streak dating to 2009 and will play UC Irvine in another elimination game Wednesday. Louisville (50-17) went 0-2 in the CWS for the second straight year and is 1-6 in three appearances in Omaha.
French (7-5) held the Cardinals to four singles in 7 1-3 innings, and Duke retired their last five batters for his first save. Louisville sophomore starter Anthony Kidston (9-1) lost for the first time in 15 decisions as a collegian and the Cardinals committed four errors, just as they did in their elimination-game loss to Oregon State last year.
ST. LOUIS (AP) — Allen Craig and Matt Adams each had two RBIs and the St. Louis Cardinals got effective work from rookie pitchers subbing for ace Adam Wainwright in a 6-2 victory over the New York Mets on Monday night. Carlos Martinez allowed an unearned run in four innings in his second career start and Nick Greenwood allowed a run on two hits in 3 1-3 innings to win in his major league debut for St. Louis, which has won seven of eight.
Matt Holliday had two hits, including a single for his 1,000th career RBI in a four-run fifth that put the Cardinals up 6-1. Mets manager Terry Collins batted the pitcher eighth for the first time in franchise history but the novel lineup with rookie pitcher Jacob deGrom batting eighth and Eric Young Jr. ninth mustered just five hits. New York has lost 10 of 13, scoring two or fewer runs six times.
