Cardinals’ Gonzales set to debut in familiar park

Sports

June 25th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

DENVER (AP) — Marco Gonzales grew up rooting for the Colorado Rockies, even pitched at Coors Field a few times in his high school career. Perhaps it’s only fitting the St. Louis Cardinals left-hander will make his major league debut in familiar surroundings Wednesday.

His father, Frank Gonzales, is even flying in for the occasion, taking a break from his duties as a pitching coach for the Rockies’ minor league team, the Tri-City Dust Devils. Marco Gonzales, who’s from up the road in Fort Collins, sat in the dugout on the eve of his first start and said, “It’s bizarre being here, sitting here in this dugout.”

Rockies end 7-game slide with 10-5 win over Cards

Sports

June 25th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

DENVER (AP) — Justin Morneau hit a three-run homer and drove in six runs as the Colorado Rockies beat the St. Louis Cardinals 10-5 on Tuesday night to snap a seven-game losing streak. Jorge De La Rosa allowed five runs, four earned, in seven innings. He is the first Rockies starter to earn a win since June 12.

Nick Greenwood pitched 1 2-3 innings in relief of starter Shelby Miller, who left in the third with back tightness. Greenwood surrendered Morneau’s homer on a hanging slider in the fourth. Morneau had an RBI single in the first and a two-run single in the seventh that gave Colorado some breathing room.

The Rockies finished with 17 hits one night after managing just three when they were shut out at home for the first time in nearly a year.

Cardinals RHP Shelby Miller exits with tight back

Sports

June 25th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

DENVER (AP) — St. Louis starter Shelby Miller left the game in the third inning with back tightness Tuesday night against the Colorado Rockies. Miller arched his back after delivering a pitch to Jorge De La Rosa, clearly in some discomfort. Cardinals manager Mike Matheny and the trainer instantly trotted out to check on the right-hander. After a few warmup tosses from Miller, Matheny brought in Nick Greenwood to take over. Miller went 2 2-3 innings, allowing three runs and six hits. He also walked five and struck out two. The Cardinals put starters Michael Wacha and Jaime Garcia on the 15-day disabled list Sunday. Wacha has trouble with his right shoulder and Garcia has inflammation in his left shoulder.
