MILWAUKEE (AP) – Matt Holliday hit a solo homer with two outs in the top of the ninth inning off Brewers closer Francisco Rodriguez, completing the St. Louis’ Cardinals comeback from a six-run deficit for a 7-6 win Friday night over Milwaukee.

Milwaukee has lost six straight and 10 of 11 games.

Holliday sent the first-pitch changeup from Rodriguez (3-3) into the left-field seats to break the tie. The Cardinals hit four homers and cut the sliding Brewers’ lead in the NL Central to one game.

Trevor Rosenthal wrapped up six shutout innings for the St. Louis bullpen with his 28th save, getting two strikeouts after allowing a leadoff single to Aramis Ramirez in the bottom of the ninth. All-Star setup man Pat Neshek (4-0) tossed 1 1/3 scoreless innings for the win.

NEWTON, Iowa (AP) — Scott Dixon will start from the pole for Saturday’s IndyCar race at the Iowa Speedway. Dixon will be joined on the top line by Target Chip Ganassi teammate Tony Kanaan following single-car qualifying on Friday. Helio Castroneves will start third, followed by Ryan Briscoe, Carlos Munoz and Sebastien Bourdais.

Team Penske has three of the top four drivers in the points chase with co-leaders Castroneves and Will Power and last week’s winner, Juan Pablo Montoya. But Penske has never won in seven starts at Iowa, while Andretti Autosport drivers have won four straight on Iowa’s short track.

The pole winner has never gone on to win an IndyCar race in Iowa.

MILWAUKEE (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals have claimed veteran George Kottaras off waivers from the Cleveland Indians, bolstering their catching position following the injury to Yadier Molina. The team says Kottaras likely will be added to the 25-man roster Saturday in Milwaukee. St. Louis begins a three-game series Friday against the Brewers. Kottaras was batting .286 with three homers and four RBIs in 10 games for Cleveland.

The Cardinals also activated starter Joe Kelly following a stint on the 60-day disabled list because of an injured left hamstring. He is to start Friday in Milwaukee, where he was hurt April 16. Left-hander Tyler Lyons was optioned to Triple-A to make room for Kelly. Left-hander Jaime Garcia, who has a shoulder injury, was moved from the 15-day to the 60-day disabled list.

Lawmaker seeks change in open enrollment law for student athletes

News, Sports

July 11th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

A Warren County legislator says he’ll try again next year to give students new privileges who switch schools in order to get away from a bully. Representative Scott Ourth started championing the idea after hearing about a 15-year-old wrestler whose older teammates verbally and physically abused him. Under Iowa’s open enrollment law, students can transfer to a neighboring school district, but they can’t play sports right away.  “He either has to quit the sport he likes to avoid being bullied in the wrestling room or he has to change school districts and be punished once again by not being able to pursue this sport,” Ourth says.

Ourth, who is a Democrat from Ackworth, is not identifying the school district or the name of the student. “All he’s trying to do is protect himself from this egregious behavior and every single time we say no to a person like that, we’re handing a victory to the bullies,” Ourth says. Ourth spoke about the issue this week before the legislature’s Administrative Rules Review Committee.

Some members of the committee said they support the open enrollment law as written, to prevent kids from cherry-picking schools just to play sports.
