Iowa’s White wants Hawkeyes to be more intense

Sports

July 15th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa senior Aaron White still can’t quite put his finger on why the Hawkeyes collapsed last season. What White has learned is that the Hawks will need to worry more about their intensity than their expectations in 2014-15.

White will enter next season as the face of the program with Devyn Marble’s departure to the NBA. It’ll be a major challenge for White, the leading returning scorer from a team that reached as high as No. 10 in the country before losing seven of their last eight games and falling to Tennessee in the opening round of the NCAA tournament.

White says last season taught him and the Hawkeyes not to worry about the high expectations others might have for the team.

Hoiberg has pacemaker replaced

AMES, Iowa (AP) – Iowa State coach Fred Hoiberg says surgery to replace his pacemaker was a success. Hoiberg underwent the procedure Tuesday at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.  Hoiberg says he’s been cleared to be discharged and to return to Ames later Tuesday.

Hoiberg was forced to retire from the NBA in 2005 following open heart surgery. He returned to his alma mater as coach in 2010 and has led the Cyclones to three straight NCAA tournament appearances. Hoiberg signed a revised contract in April that bumped his average annual salary to $2.6 million and runs until 2023.

Iowa’s Jok arrested for 2nd moped offense

July 15th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) – Iowa basketball player Peter Jok was arrested Monday night for driving his moped on a revoked license. It’s the second moped-related arrest in three months for Jok, who will be a sophomore for the Hawkeyes next fall. Jok was charged with drunk driving on his moped in late April and had his license revoked. He pleaded guilty on May 2 and completed a weekend drunk driving program, according to online court records.

Iowa City police arrested Jok again on Monday night after initially stopping him for improper rear lights and the lack of a safety flag. Jok, a 6-foot-6 shooting guard, averaged 4.4 points a game for the Hawkeyes last season.

Sports

July 15th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Seattle’s Felix Hernandez will start Tuesday night’s (Tonight’s) All-Star game for the American League and Adam Wainwright of the St. Louis Cardinals will open for the National League. Hernandez, the first Venezuela pitcher to start for the All-Stars, is 11-2 with a 2.12 ERA. He is just the second Seattle pitcher to start an All-Star game following Randy Johnson in 1995 and 1997.

NL manager Mike Matheny of the Cardinals chose the ace of his own staff. Wainwright is 12-4 with a 1.83 ERA and three complete games in 19 starts. It will be the 11th All-Star start by a Cardinals pitcher.
