Sports

July 27th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

CHICAGO (AP) – Adam Wainwright pitched seven scoreless innings and Matt Holliday hit a solo homer to lead the St. Louis Cardinals to a 1-0 victory and a series win over the Chicago Cubs on Sunday. The Cardinals won two of the three games at Wrigley Field in the weekend set. The Cubs have not won a home series since taking two of three from the Miami Marlins June 6-8.

Wainwright allowed five hits and walked three during his seven innings. It was a far cry from his previous outing when he allowed six runs (four earned) in 4? innings against the Tampa Bay Rays last Tuesday. Kevin Siegrist worked the eighth and Trevor Rosenthal pitched the ninth for his 32nd save in 36 chances.

Cubs rookie Kyle Hendricks (1-1) allowed just one run on seven hits in 6? innings.

Tony La Russa inducted into Baseball Hall of Fame

COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. (AP) — Tony La Russa, third all-time in victories as a manager, has been inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. La Russa was enshrined Sunday in ceremonies at Cooperstown. La Russa won 2,728 times in his long career, behind only Connie Mack and John McGraw. He was picked as manager of the year four times and won 12 division titles, six pennants and World Series titles in 1989, 2006, and 2011.

Signed by the Kansas City Athletics in 1962, La Russa’s six-year major league career as an infielder was forgettable. He batted .199 with no home runs in 132 games. But after earning a law degree at Florida State University and giving managing a try in the minor leagues, he found his niche, was elevated to manage the Chicago White Sox in 1979, and his managing career took off. He won two championships with St. Louis and one with Oakland.

Behind a 4-RBI performance from Corey Harrell, and a complete game shutout from pitcher Otis Roby, Twin Cedars defeated Underwood, 7-0, in the Class 1A state quarterfinals Saturday at Principal Park in Des Moines. The Underwood Eagles finish the season with a record of 23-8. The top-ranked and second-seeded Sabers (34-0) are in the semifinals for the second straight season.

CHICAGO (AP) — Matt Adams drove in four runs, A.J. Pierzynski had three hits in his St. Louis debut and the Cardinals beat the Chicago Cubs 6-3 on Saturday to stop a four-game skid. Shelby Miller returned to the Cardinals’ rotation and pitched effectively into the sixth inning. Adams hit a two-run double in the first and a two-run triple in a four-run seventh that was capped by Pierzynski’s RBI single.

Randy Choate (2-2) got the last out of the sixth in relief of Miller. Trevor Rosenthal worked around two hits in a scoreless ninth, earning his 31st save in 35 tries.

Chiefs working on competition at cornerback

Sports

July 26th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) – Kansas City Chiefs coach Andy Reid is serious about what he has said about competition at the cornerback position. Sean Smith, last year’s starter at right cornerback, moved to the second team for the last four days of organized team activities. His status hasn’t changed three days into training camp. “We look at Sean as a first-team player,” Reid said. “We need all those guys and we need two-deep at the corner where we feel like that two-deep is equivalent to starting players. That’s where we’re looking.”

The Chiefs are in transition following a 2013 season where the defense ranked 25th against the pass (247.6 yards per game). Another factor for changes may have been the memory of blowing a 38-10 third-quarter lead en route to a 45-44 playoff loss to the Indianapolis Colts.

Cubs option RHP Ramirez to Triple-A Iowa

Sports

July 26th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

CHICAGO (AP) – The Chicago Cubs optioned right-handed reliever Neil Ramirez to Triple-A Iowa on Saturday and recalled right-handed pitcher Blake Parker. Ramirez has pitched 28 innings in relief this season, leading all Cubs relievers with a 0.96 ERA. Manager Rick Renteria indicated that the roster move was made to give Ramirez, who suffered a shoulder injury last season, a midseason rest.

Ramirez pitched one inning of scoreless relief in Friday’s win over the St. Louis Cardinals. The 25-year-old rookie was acquired by the Chicago Cubs last season in a trade that sent starting pitcher Matt Garza to the Texas Rangers.

Taking Ramirez’s place in the bullpen is Parker, who begins his fourth stint with the team this season. In 5 2-3 innings for the Cubs, Parker is 1-0 with a 9.53 ERA. The 29-year-old converted 21 saves in 28 games for Triple-A Iowa this season.

Cardinals sign veteran catcher A.J. Pierzynski

Sports

July 26th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

CHICAGO (AP) – The St. Louis Cardinals have signed veteran catcher A.J. Pierzynski. Pierzynski, 37, was in the starting lineup and batting sixth for the Cardinals’ afternoon matchup against the Chicago Cubs. Catcher George Kottaras was designated for assignment to make room on the roster.

The Cardinals have been looking for a steady presence behind the plate since All-Star Yadier Molina went down with a torn ligament in his right thumb on July 9. Molina underwent surgery on July 11 and is expected to miss 8-12 weeks.

The left-handed hitting Pierzynski played 72 games this year with the Boston Red Sox, hitting .254 with four home runs before being released on July 16. He has a career average of .282 over 17 seasons with six teams.
