Cardinals beat Orioles 8-3 to avoid sweep

Sports

August 10th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

BALTIMORE (AP) — Rookie Kolten Wong had four hits and scored twice, Peter Bourjos homered and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Baltimore Orioles 8-3 Sunday to avoid a three-game sweep. After allowing nine home runs in losing the first two games of the series by a collective 22-5 score, the Cardinals amassed a season-high 17 hits — 14 of them singles.

Bourjos capped the barrage with a three-run drive in the ninth off Zach Britton, ending the left-hander’s run of 27 straight scoreless appearances at home. Wong’s four hits, all of them singles, matched a career high and lifted his batting average 11 points to .253.

Iowa State looks to plug holes at defensive line

Sports

August 10th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State looked relatively set at defensive line at the end of last season. It all fell apart in the offseason. Nose guard Brandon Jensen quit the team with a year of eligibility left, and starting tackle Rodney Coe was dismissed for violating team rules. Fellow tackle David Irving was kicked off the team after photos of him holding an uprooted stop sign in the midst of a campus-wide disturbance emerged on social media.

The Cyclones know they’ll need to find some stability along that line to have any shot at besting last year’s 3-9 record. Jensen’s return following an offseason chat with coach Paul Rhoads should help the Cyclones compensate for losing Coe and Irving.

Chiefs’ Kelce finally shows glimpse of potential

Sports

August 10th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) — As tight end Travis Kelce walked down the hill and onto the practice fields at Missouri Western, the crowd that turned up at sunrise for Saturday’s practice gave him a round of applause.

After spending all of last season on injured reserve and dealing with a knee injury that many though could jeopardize his playing career, Kelce finally showed a glimpse of his potential in the Chiefs’ preseason opener. The athletic Kelce got loose over the middle, hauled in a pass and then out-ran the entire Bengals secondary on what turned into a 69-yard touchdown reception.

It was exactly the kind of play the Chiefs envisioned Kelce making when he was chosen in the third round out of Cincinnati. And it was why the fans Saturday were cheering him on.

Orioles hit 3 HRs in 10-3 rout of Cardinals

Sports

August 9th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

BALTIMORE (AP) — Caleb Joseph homered in his fifth consecutive game, Nelson Cruz hit his 30th and Delmon Young also went deep as the Batlimore Orioles beat John Lackey and the St. Louis Cardinals 10-3 Saturday. All three home runs came with a man on against Lackey (1-1), making his second start since coming from Boston in a July 31 trade. The right-hander gave up nine runs and 13 hits in five-plus innings to fall to 14-8 lifetime against Baltimore.

The Orioles have hit nine homers in winning the first two games of the three-game set by a collective 22-5 score. Baltimore has won seven straight series and leads the AL East by six games, its largest margin since September 1997.

Joseph, a rookie, had three homers in first 48 games before his recent power surge. The club record for homers in successive games is six, by Reggie Jackson and Chris Davis.

Deer hunts set at DeSoto, Boyer Chute refuges

Ag/Outdoor, News, Sports

August 9th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

MISSOURI VALLEY, Iowa (AP) — The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service says there will be deer hunts this fall at DeSoto and Boyer Chute national wildlife refuges. There will be two hunts at DeSoto: Oct. 18-19 and Dec. 20-21. Both hunts are muzzleloader and antlerless deer only.

All hunters must possess a DeSoto access permit for the hunts. These are free and can be obtained on the DeSoto’s website, http://www.fws.gov/refuge/desoto/, at the visitor center or by contacting Mindy Sheets at mindy_sheets@fws.gov or 712-388-4802.

The Boyer Chute hunt will run Dec. 13-21. This hunt also will be antlerless and muzzleloader only. DeSoto and Boyer Chute national wildlife refuges sit north of Omaha, Nebraska, along U.S. Highway 30 between Missouri Valley, Iowa, and along U.S. Highway 75 near Fort Calhoun, Nebraska.
