Texas facing uphill climb for bowl berth

Sports

October 17th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — The Texas Longhorns have reached a critical point in the season. It’s time to start winning to risk getting shut of a bowl for the second time in five years. The Longhorns (2-4, 1-2 Big 12) need at least four wins in their final six games to qualify for a bowl in Strong’s first season. The only time Texas didn’t play in a bowl under former coach Mack Brown was 2010 when the Longhorns crashed to 5-7 the season after playing for a national championship.

The Longhorns are home Saturday night against Iowa State (2-4, 0-3). Texas played arguably its best game of the season in last week’s loss to Oklahoma. But big issues remain, including poor special teams and a habit of poor starts in the second half that have doomed Texas in all four losses.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Travis Ishikawa hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning, sending the San Francisco Giants to the World Series with a 6-3 win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Thursday night.

These every-other-year Giants clinched the NL Championship Series in Game 5 and now will face the Royals in an all wild-card Fall Classic that begins Tuesday night in Kansas City.

Pablo Sandoval singled to start the ninth against Michael Wacha, making his first appearance of the postseason for the Cardinals. After an out, Brandon Belt walked to bring up Ishikawa, who drove a 2-0 pitch into the elevated seats in right field.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — James Michael McAdoo scored 16 of his 20 points in the fourth quarter and the Warriors rallied to beat the Nuggets 104-101 on Thursday night for their fourth straight victory. Golden State’s Klay Thompson added 18 points in the first NBA exhibition game in Des Moines since 1997.

The Nuggets led by 13 heading into the fourth quarter. Wilson Chandler and Timofey Mozgov each scored 18 points for Denver (1-4), which dropped its third straight game.

The game marked Barnes’s return to his native Iowa. He finished with five points.
