KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Madison Bumgarner tossed seven brilliant innings, Hunter Pence hit a two-run homer and the San Francisco Giants took Game 1 of the World Series by hammering the Royals 7-1 in Kansas City. Bumgarner allowed three hits and blanked the Royals until Salvador Perez homered with two out in the seventh. Pablo Sandoval had two RBIs for the Giants, who have won their last seven World Series games.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The Philadelphia Phillies have re-signed right-hander Jerome Williams to a one-year, $2.5 million contract. Williams was 4-2 with a 2.83 ERA in nine starts for the Phillies after being claimed off waivers from the Texas Rangers in August. He also pitched for Houston last year and was 6-7 with a 4.77 ERA in 37 games with all three teams.
MONTREAL (AP) — The Montreal Canadiens are the first NHL team with six victories this season, improving to 6-1-0 with a 2-1 overtime win against Detroit. David Desharnais scored the game-winner 56 seconds into overtime after Alex Galchenyuk knotted the score with 3:09 left in regulation. Carey Price stopped 27 shots and blanked the Red Wings following Henrik Zetterberg’s goal with 6:19 left in the second period.
IRVING, Texas (AP) — The Dallas Cowboys have released defensive end Michael Sam from the practice squad, causing the NFL’s first openly gay player to try to find a third team since being drafted by St. Louis this year. Sam spent seven weeks with the Cowboys after joining their practice squad Sept. 3. He went to Dallas four days after being released by the Rams, who selected him in the seventh round of the draft.
NEW YORK (AP) — The Denver Broncos top the AP Pro32 power rankings after receiving 11 first-place votes from a 12-member media panel that regularly covers the league. Dallas got the other first-place vote after improving to 6-1 with Sunday’s 31-21 win over the New York Giants. Rounding out the top five are Philadelphia, Indianapolis and Arizona.
With game one of the World Series this week in Kansas City, and Royals fans everywhere eager to buy a ticket after a 28 year World Series absence, Better Business Bureau (BBB) serving Nebraska. South Dakota, The Kansas Plains and Southwest Iowa is alerting fans to look out for fraudulent sellers when shopping online for expensive and hard-to-get tickets.
BBB warns that sellers of game tickets on secondary ticket websites may be fraudulent. “The most common ways secondary-ticket sellers scam baseball fans is by delivering counterfeit tickets or simply not sending the tickets,” said BBB President Jim Hegarty. “Even if the tickets do arrive, they are sometimes not for the seats the seller advertised – which can mean the fan is stuck with seats that aren’t next to each other, or not in the sections they bargained for.”
The secondary-ticket market for sporting events, which includes tickets bought and sold by professional brokers, speculators and season-ticket holders, is a $10-billion-a-year industry, with online sales accounting for one-third of transactions, according to StubHub.com.
“World Series tickets are extremely tough for the average fan to find and purchase at a reasonable price, and that’s driving buyers to the Internet and the secondary-ticket market,” added Hegarty. “Fans must balance their passion for their team with awareness that not all online ticket sellers will deliver on their promises, and a bad transaction could leave them at home on the couch instead of at the big game.”
Fans should also be skeptical of the hundreds of online auctions, online classifieds, and bulletin boards using person-to-person sales. The World Series is big business for the hosting cities, and where there is big money to be made, scams always follow. To avoid problems like this, BBB advises ticket seekers to check out the company’s Business Review at bbb.org to find out about the company.
BBB offers the following advice for fans seeking tickets:
. Before buying from an online ticket broker, see if there is a BBB seal on the website and click on it to make sure it is real. BBB’s dynamic seal will take you directly to the BBB Business Review on the company at bbb.org.
. Make sure the website has a secure payment processing system, usually denoted by “https://” at the start of its website address or URL or a small closed lock icon at the bottom of the screen.
. If you buy tickets through an online auction site, choose a seller with a long history of satisfied customers. Scammers can hijack old accounts, so make sure the seller has recently sold other tickets.
. Ticket buyers also should be wary of sellers who try to lure buyers from a legitimate site to another site for a “private” transaction. Scammers often want to conduct their business on sites with names that mimic well-known companies but actually are fakes.
. If you are buying tickets through an online classified ad site, never pay the seller by wire transfer. You will have no way to get your money back if the tickets do not arrive or are counterfeit.
. Always use a credit card so you have some recourse; do not use cash.
. Know the difference between a ticket broker (legitimate and accredited reseller) and a ticket scalper (unregulated and unlicensed ticket seller).
. Check the ticket broker’s refund policy. Only buy from a ticket reseller that provides clear details about the terms of the transaction.
. Be careful buying tickets from someone on the street. When you get to the gate and find out your tickets aren’t real, the seller will be long gone.
. Check the location of the seats ahead of time. Always ask for section, row and seat number to avoid obstructed view seats or seats that do not exist. Also, feel free to ask questions to make certain you get all the answers you need to feel comfortable with your ticket purchase.
If you believe you have purchased a counterfeit ticket, immediately report it to the National Association of Ticket Brokers (NATB) hotline at 630-510-4594 and file a complaint with BBB at bbbinc.org.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs were such a mess in their season opener against Tennessee that some people were quick to write them off, their dramatic turnaround last season merely a fluke. After steadily improving over the first few weeks of the season, the Chiefs earned a marquee victory on Sunday when they rallied for a 23-20 victory in San Diego — not only knocking off one of the league’s hottest teams but taking a big step toward the top of the division.
Now, they face a schedule that starts with the Rams and Jets at Arrowhead Stadium, a chance to pick up a couple more wins before the schedule gets difficult again.

Iowa pheasant hunters should see more of what they came for, as they step into the field this fall. More pheasants. The Iowa DNR says a strong rebound in August roadside counts of Iowa’s most popular game bird has buoyed expectations, heading toward the October 25 opener.DNR pheasant biologist Todd Bogenschutz says “We have the best pheasant numbers since 2008. People are telling me that more birds are flushing; that they are hearing more crowing and cackling out there.”
Counts this summer averaged 17.4 pheasants per 30 mile survey route, up 151 percent from last year’s 6.9…an all-time low. Of the nine regions monitored, eight had increases ranging from 102-290 percent. Only northeast Iowa showed no change.
Bogenschutz says drought conditions across the past two summers probably kept pheasants in the fields on August mornings, rather than pushing up to road edges, to escape heavy dew. That may have kept many from being tallied on the 200 gravel road routes surveyed. Hunters harvested 10,000 more pheasants in 2013, despite the record low counts.
Bogenschutz predicts “The best habitat will hold birds; good winter cover, good nesting cover, too. Hunters should be happy hunting those areas, over just decent nesting cover.” He suggests hunters conduct their hunts around the best habitat, and urges hunters to “Talk to the farmers where you will be hunting. Ask what they have seen while harvesting the crops.”
With a better bird outlook, the numbers of hunters should climb, too. Last year, only 41,000 pheasant hunters were in the fields. Early in the season, standing crops are going to be a factor. Bogenschutz says “Harvest is running a little behind. The season is starting a couple days earlier, too. That could be a challenge for hunters, until the corn is out. Our counts were up; hens with broods were way up. There will be a lot of young roosters, who aren’t wise to the ways of the wild, yet.”
Hunting hours for Iowa’s pheasant seasons are 8 a.m. until 4:30 each day. The daily limit is three rooster pheasants. The season closes on January 10th.
