Pheasant hunting season opens today (Saturday) in Iowa

Ag/Outdoor, News, Sports

October 25th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

Today (Saturday), marks the start of the pheasant hunting season in Iowa. Mick Klemesrud, a spokesman for the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, says weather conditions should be ideal for hunters this weekend, though there will be challenges. “We’ve got a lot of crops still out in the field and that could cause a little bit of tougher hunting if there’s a lot of standing corn for the birds to escape to,” Klemesrud says. “On the flip side of that, it could provide some better late season hunting because the birds haven’t been hunted that much.” He’s hopeful the number of hunters on opening day will be up this year after a drop in 2013.

“We’re hopeful that we can hit 60,000,” Klemesrud says. “Last year was our lowest on record of about 41,000. Traditionally, back in the late ’80s and ’90s, we’ve had opening day numbers around 200,000. We used to call it the largest sporting event in the state. We’re hoping that some of them come back.” Hunters should always get permission from land owners to hunt on their property. Klemesrud has some other safety tips.

“We always want to stress blaze orange, knowing the zone of fire, stay in a straight line, talk to everybody in the hunt so they all know what their role is and where there zones of fire are going to be,” he says. “You always want to be seen in the field. Go beyond the minimum. Wear as much blaze orange as you can.” The DNR says there was one hunting-related injury during the pheasant season last year. Cardinals Wainwright undergoes elbow surgery

Sports

October 25th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Cardinals ace Adam Wainwright has undergone what the team describes as minor elbow surgery that should not set him back for next season. The Cardinals say Friday’s operation was an arthroscopic procedure to trim a small piece of cartilage from the right elbow. The 33-year-old Wainwright is expected to begin physical therapy in two weeks and resume his offseason throwing program in eight weeks.

General manager John Mozeliak and manager Mike Matheny made no mention of the injury at a news conference to review the season earlier this week. Wainwright went 20-9 with a career-low 2.38 ERA in 32 starts this season. The team says an initial MRI came back negative, but Wainwright requested additional tests and the findings of a second MRI resulted in the decision to operate.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Jeremy Guthrie pitched shutout ball into the sixth inning, Lorenzo Cain drove in an early run off Tim Hudson and made a pair of nifty catches, and the Kansas City Royals beat the San Francisco Giants 3-2 Friday night to take a 2-1 World Series lead. Cain’s RBI groundout three batters in put the Royals ahead, and Kansas City expanded its lead to 3-0 in the sixth when Alex Gordon hit an RBI double off Cain and scored on Eric Hosmer’s single off left-hander Javier Lopez.

IAHSAA will use new format to set playoff pairings

Sports

October 24th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

The pairings for the upcoming high school football playoffs will have a much different look this season. Gone is the format from the past few years where the entire bracket is released for all six classes and instead the pairings will be put together after each round. Todd Tharp of the Iowa High School Athletic Association says the new format is designed to limit travel.

He says school administrators have shared their concerns with schools traveling over three-hours to a ball game that their patrons have a hard time traveling to. The IHSAA visited with its Football Advisory Committee and Board and discussed putting in place the 125-mile travel limitation for the 8-Player through 3-A games.

Tharp says the new system won’t change the pairings when it comes to seeding but there could be district rematches in the first two rounds. He says “There’ll still be the District Champion. We’ll still play the 4th place team. The district runner-up will still play the 3rd place team. Unfortunately in some areas of the State, there might be some district rematches that will take place where the District 1 champion will still have to play the District 1st 4th place team on that first Wednesday night.”

Tharp says they will no longer be automatically matching teams from neighboring districts. “The number one team might be in the southern part of one district, and the number four is in the northern parts of another district. They might get matched-up, and maybe the number two is one the east side and the number three is one the west side from another district. You could combine maybe three different districts together to get those games in the first round,” according to Tharp.

He says they should have all 192 qualifiers and their seeding on the association website before midnight. It will then take a couple of hours to complete the pairings. Tharp says he’s “Hoping between two and two-thirty on Saturday morning, that we will have all 96 games on the website (at http://www.iahsaa.org/). The home team, visiting team, and their seed [will be there] for fans to see, at that particular time.”

The first round for all six classes is Wednesday night.
