Chiefs QB Smith to practice after shoulder injury

Sports

October 30th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith plans to practice Wednesday despite spraining his troublesome throwing shoulder in last weekend’s victory over the St. Louis Rams. Smith landed on his right shoulder shortly before halftime. He received treatment in the locker room and played the entire second half, complaining only later of a bit of soreness. The Chiefs play the New York Jets on Sunday at Arrowhead Stadium.

Smith has a history of shoulder trouble dating to his days with the San Francisco 49ers. He missed eight games and finished the 2007 season on injured reserve after separating it, requiring surgery that December. He also missed the entire 2008 season after breaking a bone in the shoulder a few days before the start of the season.

Smith also separated his non-throwing shoulder in 2010.

Bumgarner, Giants beat KC 3-2 to win World Series

Sports

October 30th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Madison Bumgarner pitched five innings of near-perfect relief and the San Francisco Giants held off the Kansas City Royals 3-2 Wednesday night in Game 7 of the World Series for their third championship in five seasons. With both starters chased early, this became a matchup of bullpens. And no one stood taller than the 6-foot-5 Bumgarner, who added to his postseason legacy with another dominant performance.

After Gregor Blanco misplayed Alex Gordon’s drive for a single and two-base error, Bumgarner got Salvador Perez to pop foul to third baseman Pablo Sandoval for the final out. The Giants ended a Series streak that had seen home teams win the last nine Game 7s. San Francisco took this pairing of wild-card teams after earning titles in 2012 and 2010.

Pitching on two days’ rest after his shutout in Game 5, Bumgarner entered in the fifth with a 3-2 lead. After giving up a leadoff single to Omar Infante, he shut down the Royals and earned a save to go with his two wins in the Series.

Iowa set for make-or-break stretch

Sports

October 29th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) – Iowa (5-2, 2-1 Big Ten) is still in control of its destiny in the West division.  But a collapse could be imminent if the Hawkeyes don’t make major progress over the next few weeks. Iowa’s rush defense was broken down repeatedly in its last two games. The Hawkeyes are also thinner at linebacker now that Reggie Spearman is suspended for the next two games after he was charged with drunk driving last weekend.

The offense remains among the worst in the Big Ten, and the sudden departure of wide receiver Derrick Willies will further test Iowa’s ability to push defenses. Iowa kicks off a stretch of five games in 28 days on Saturday against Northwestern (3-4, 2-2).

Hawkeyes look to put late collapse behind them

Sports

October 29th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) – Last year’s Hawkeyes could have been the team to revive the program. Instead, they’ll be remembered for crumbling down the stretch. Iowa was ranked 15th in the country before it dropped seven of its last eight games, including a first-round loss to Tennessee in the NCAA tournament. Then Hawkeyes finished 20-13 and 9-9 in the Big Ten.

Iowa has enough talent to make its loyal fan base forget about last season’s stumble, even with the loss of star guard Devyn Marble. The real question is whether the Hawkeyes can overcome adversity instead of being overwhelmed by it.

Iowa opens the season on Nov. 14 against Hampton.
