IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) – The University of Iowa is refusing to identify the fan booted out of a Kinnick Stadium suite for yelling at offensive coordinator Greg Davis at halftime of Saturday’s game. Iowa spokesman Steve Roe said the individual was a guest in a hospitality booth of Learfield Sports, which handles Hawkeye sports marketing.

The fan caused a stir when he yelled at Davis to throw the ball down the field as Davis was getting on an elevator. Roe says the fan also directed comments at Wisconsin’s staff. Roe called for security. Athletic officials asked the fan to leave and he did so on his own. Roe says the school isn’t identifying the individual because police weren’t involved.

UI Police spokesman Dave Visin says the incident was over by the time officers responded.

Members of the Atlantic School District’s Board of Education Monday night, approved the hiring of Head Girls Swimming Team Coach Dean Junker, as the head Boys Varsity High School Swimming Coach for the current, Winter season, which started Monday. The recommendation came from High School Activities Director/Assistant Principal Matt Alexander, and was forwarded to the Board by Superintendent Mike Amstein. The Board however, had many questions about the program, before approving the hiring of Junker.

They asked f the number of students participating in the program could be sustained throughout the season. Alexander said they are “locked-in” to the current season, so regardless of whether they lose a couple of members along the way, they will still be able to participate in district events.  Board member Phil Hascall said told Alexander he has trouble approving programs and positions more than three months after the school year began, given the fact they are looking at ways to cut the budget.

Hascall told Alexander “You come to us after the season started, with no discussion about any of this.” Alexander said the Swim Team was approved by the Board last year, but acknowledged they probably really wanted to see what the number of participants were before the agreed in total to having the program. He said there originally more than a dozen students interested in the team, but later found it a struggle to sign-up more than eight.

Alexander said there are currently 10 students participating in the program. Board member Rod Hartwig said they agreed to the program if a minimum of 10 Atlantic students were involved. He asked, since it was difficult to sign-up kids this first year, if it wouldn’t be better to look to surrounding districts for participants.  Alexander said Junker has looked to the areas to our north and east – Exira and Audubon, for instance – that are farther away from Lewis Central. They might look at approaching Red Oak, Griswold and CAM, at prior to next year’s season.

He says he’s already had initial talks with some of the district officials.

During Friday’s Iowa-Nebraska football game, the American Red Cross will honor two men, one from each state, who went above and beyond in the face of crisis. Red Cross spokeswoman Kara Kelly says the Iowan who’s being singled out for recognition as a “citizen hero” is 18-year-old Austin Benson of Winterset, a senior at Winterset High School. “Austin acted with great bravery when his friend was thrown from her horse,” Kelly says. “The horse rolled on top of her and the saddlehorn punctured her leg. It ended up being very critical injuries. Austin applied pressure to the wound and kept her awake while waiting for the ambulance. According the medical professionals, he reallys saved her life.”

The honoree from Nebraska is Gene Willers, the president of the Midwest Bank Branch in Pilger, a town that was forever changed on June 16th. “You may remember, there was a very large tornado that went through that town this summer,” Kelly says. “Gene put eight people in the bank safe. It only locks from the outside so he locked them inside and then went into the basement. The bank was in fact destroyed but luckily, everybody survived.”

Benson and Willers will be honored during the Hawkeye-Cornhusker game at Kinnick Stadium in Iowa City. “We have a great presentation that will happen during halftime at Friday’s game,” Kelly says. “We have two videos that will show their stories. They’ll also have their names engraved on the Hy-Vee Heroes game trophy and then they’ll receive honorary plates from both athletic directors. It’s really a wonderful tribute to these two men.”

Benson, Willers and members of their families will be guests of the Hawkeyes and the Huskers at the game and will participate in a variety of special pregame activities. Fans of both schools were invited to nominate residents of Iowa and Nebraska who have performed extraordinary acts of heroism and service in their communities. Staff and volunteers from the Red Cross selected the winners.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Senior Aaron White scored 17 points with nine rebounds and Iowa held off Pepperdine 72-61 on Monday night, snapping a two-game losing streak. Mike Gesell and Jarrod Uthoff had 15 points apiece for the Hawkeyes (3-2), who never trailed but nonetheless struggled at times against the Waves (3-1).

Pepperdine got as close as 39-36 before Iowa responded with an 11-0 run. Still, the Waves kept their deficit within single digits for much of the second half. It was a 7-point game after Amadi Udenyi’s 3-pointer with 1:10 left, but Iowa made 6 of 8 free throws to seal the win. Shawn Olden had 17 points while Stacy Davis added 13 points and nine boards for Pepperdine, whose winning streak was halted at three games.

The Hawkeyes were certainly happy to be back in Iowa City after losing to Texas and Syracuse in New York last week. They didn’t look very comfortable on their home court in the first half though. Iowa let a 10-point lead dwindle to 35-30 by the end of the half, which it closed by missing seven straight shots. The Hawkeyes let Pepperdine creep as close as 39-36 before Anthony Clemmons hit a 3 and a transition layup to spark. Uthoff’s mid-range jumper made it 50-36 with 12:25 left.

Pepperdine responded with a 10-2 spurt. But Uthoff threw down a one-handed dunk off an alley-oop pass from Josh Oglesby, and Gesell hit a 3 to push Iowa back ahead 62-49.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Georges Niang scored 28 points, reserve Dustin Hogue had 17 and No. 13 Iowa State beat Alabama 84-74 on Monday night to reach the CBE Classic championship game. Naz Long also scored 15 points for the Cyclones (3-0), who will play Maryland for the tournament title on Tuesday night. Matt Thomas returned from a suspension to score 13 points.

The Terrapins beat Arizona State 78-73 earlier in the night. Rodney Cooper scored 27 points for the Crimson Tide (3-1), who had won the only previous meeting between the schools. Levi Randolph finished with 18 points.

MESA, Ariz. (AP) — Ray Sadecki, who pitched in the major leagues for 18 seasons and won 20 games for the 1964 World Series champion St. Louis Cardinals, has died from complications of blood cancer, his son, Steve, said. Sadecki was 73. Sadecki made his major league debut at age 19 with the Cardinals in 1960. In 1964, he went 20-11 and helped St. Louis win the National League pennant. The Cardinals beat the New York Yankees in the World Series in seven games.

Sadecki was traded to the San Francisco Giants in 1966 for Orlando Cepeda. The left-hander had a 135-131 career record with a 3.78 ERA with St. Louis, San Francisco, the New York Mets, Atlanta, Kansas City and Milwaukee.

Sadecki died in Mesa last week, his son said Monday.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs have placed Pro Bowl safety Eric Berry on the non-football illness list after a mass was discovered in his chest following Thursday night’s game in Oakland. Berry began feeling discomfort in his chest near the end of the game, and a series of tests taken in Oakland and back in Kansas City revealed the mass. Chiefs trainer Rick Burkholder said that there has been no definitive diagnosis, but the leading possibility is lymphoma.

Burkholder said that Berry had never complained of the pain until last week, and a physical taken over the summer came back clear. Berry was on his way Monday to Atlanta, where he was to be examined by specialists at Emory University.

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State senior tight end E.J. Bibbs has been invited to participate in the 2015 Reese’s Senior Bowl, one of college football’s oldest annual All-Star games.

The Reese’s Senior Bowl is an all-star game played annually in Mobile, Alabama where NFL prospects who completed their eligibility get the chance to showcase their abilities. Iowa State has sent 24 players and one coach to the Senior Bowl, including 2014 participant Kirby Van Der Kamp.

The game will be played on January 24, 2015.

Bibbs, one of eight semifinalists for the John Mackey Award, has established himself as one of the best tight ends in the nation in 2014, recording 45 catches for 382 yards and eight TDs.
Bibbs leads all “power 5” conference tight ends in TD catches (8) and receptions (45). Bibbs’ eight TD receptions is one shy from the school record.

A native of Chicago, Ill., Bibbs’ name is all over the ISU tight end record book. He has two of the top-three single-season tight end receptions marks (3rd- 39 in 2013; 2nd- 45 in 2014) and his 84 career catches ranks third all-time among ISU tight ends.

Bibbs has caught a pass in 22-straight games, tying for the second-longest streak in ISU history. Twice this season Bibbs has been named the CFPA TE Performer of the Week, including after a 10-catch, 73-yard and 2-TD performance at Texas.
