The Iowa Department of Public Health today (Sunday, 10-a.m.) reports five more deaths have been attributed to COVID-19 statewide since 10-a.m. Saturday, for a total of 1,165, and 750 additional, positive cases of COVID-19, for a total of 69,756. Persons with preexisting medical conditions made up for 813 of the deaths. Officials say 627 deaths have taken place at a long-term care facility since the beginning of the outbreak. There have been a total of 49,651 persons who have recovered from the virus and 6,046 additional negative test results received since Saturday, for a total of 596,649 since testing began. A total of 666,905 individuals have been tested for COVID-19. The combined 14-day positivity rate is 10.9%.
Here in the KJAN listening area: Adair County has one new positive case of COVID-19; Harrison County had two additional cases; Guthrie County has 2 new cases; Pottawattamie County cases increased by nine, to 1,717.
There are 309 Iowans hospitalized with coronavirus, a decline of 6 since Saturday. IDPH reported 91 patients are in intensive care, a decline of 3 since Saturday. There were 13 people admitted to a hospital, for a total of 52. And, 38 is the number of patients who are on a ventilator. In western/southwest Iowa: 11 patients are hospitalized with COVID-19, two more than on Saturday; 8 are in an ICU, and person was admitted, and three patients are on ventilators.
Long-Term Care outbreaks remain at 29. IDPH reported 802 positive cases and 365 recoveries within those facilities.

(RED OAK, Iowa) – An accident involving an aircraft in Montgomery County, Saturday afternoon, resulted in two persons suffering minor injuries. Montgomery County Emergency Management Director Brian Hamman, Sunday morning, said the aircraft made an emergency landing in a standing corn field at around 1-p.m. Saturday, near the intersection of 175th and I Avenue, in rural Red Oak. The incident remains under investigation by local and federal authorities.
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — An Iowa judge has refused to allowed some Des Moines area bars to reopen while their lawsuit challenging Gov. Kim Reynolds’ new round of bar closures makes its way through the courts. The Des Moines Register reports that Polk County Judge William Kelly emphasized the importance of public health Friday in his explanation of the ruling denying a temporary injunction to the bar owners in Polk and Dallas county. Attorney Billy Mallory said he will appeal the denial while continuing to prepare for trial, where he will seek a permanent injunction.
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The Polk County sheriff’s office released dashcam footage and other information Friday about the fatal shooting of a Wisconsin man by one of its deputies in 2018. It wasn’t immediately clear from the video released Friday if 25-year-old Isaiah Hayes was shot in the back, as his family contends. The sheriff’s office disclosed details in an online video that includes dashboard camera footage of deputies chasing the Ashland, Wisconsin, man through central Iowa. They also released previously undisclosed documents and radio communications. The sheriff’s office says Deputy Ryan Phillips saw Hayes run from a stolen car near Altoona, Iowa. Phillips reported that Hayes had a weapon and that Phillips fired when Hayes refused orders to drop it.
MANCHESTER, Iowa (AP) — An eastern Iowa hog farmer has been sentenced to life in prison in the death of his wife, who was impaled in the back with a corn rake. Iowa District Court Judge Thomas Bitter issued the required sentence of life without parole Friday for 44-year-old Todd M. Mullis. He was convicted in September 2019 in the death of his wife, 39-year-old Amy Mullis, on the couple’s farm near Earlville. Mullis has maintained his innocence. Prosecutors say Mullis was furious that his wife was having an affair and feared he’d lose their farm if she divorced him. The sentencing hearing was postponed four times because of restrictions related to the coronavirus.
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Des Moines police have made a second arrest in the murder of a man who was shot to death in a neighborhood near Drake University. Police said Friday they charged 27-year-old Michael Jermaine Jacobs of Des Moines with first-degree murder in the death of 36-year-old Sean Newman of Des Moines. Whitney Ann Davis, 33, of Des Moines was charged a day earlier with first-degree murder in the case. Police said in a news release Friday that the evidence indicates that Jacobs was the person who shot and killed Newman on Wednesday.Detectives are continuing the investigation, but no additional arrests are expected.
An accident involving an aircraft in Montgomery County, Saturday afternoon, resulted in two persons being hurt. Montgomery County Emergency Management Director Brian Hamman, Sunday morning, said the accident happened at around 1-p.m. Saturday near the intersection of 175th and I Avenue, in rural Red Oak.
Hamman says Montgomery County officials were notified by staff at Montgomery County Memorial Hospital Emergency Room that two individuals were being treated for minor injuries sustained in the accident. After an investigation it was confirmed that an aircraft did make an emergency landing in standing corn near the location mentioned.
At this time, Hamman says the investigation continues by local and federal authorities. Further information will be provided once all the facts are confirmed regarding the situation.
Two people, including a child, died in separate Utility Terrain Vehicle (UTV) crashes Saturday morning, in Iowa. According to the Iowa State Patrol, an accident in Decatur County claimed of life of three-year old Wyatt Archer Moser, of Leon. The crash happened at around 8:40-a.m.
Authorities say the child was a passenger on a John Deere UTV with two other, relatives who are minors. The machine was being operated on private property. When the older driver and older passenger dismounted from the machine, the 3-year old moved into the driver’s seat and accelerated the UTV. The machine struck a parked 5th wheel trailer. The boy died from his injuries at the Decatur County Hospital.
The second UTV accident happened about an hour later, in northern Iowa’s Clayton County. The State Patrol says a 2004 Toyota Avalon driven by 23-year old Jasmyne Jones, of Cedar Rapids, and a 2016 Polaris Ranger operated by 72-year old Byron Meyer, of Postville, were northbound on Gunder Road near the intersection with 120th Street.
As the Toyota and a non-contact vehicle were over-taking the UTV, Meyer attempted to turn west onto 120th. When his UTV collided with the Toyota, Meyer – who was unrestrained in the machine – was ejected and died at the scene. His passenger, 68-year old Eileen Myer, also of Postville, was wearing a seat belt. She was transported by Postville EMS to the hospital in Decorah, for treatment of her injuries.
The accident remains under investigation.
DUBUQUE – Officials with the Iowa Dept. of Corrections (DOC) said Saturday, 33-year old Korey Sherdall McGhee, a black male who was convicted of Robbery 2nd Degree and other crimes in Dubuque County, failed to report back to the Dubuque Residential Facility as required Friday night.

McGhee stands 5-feet 9-inches tall, and weighs 372 pounds. He was admitted to the work release facility on July 29, 2020. Persons with information on McGhee’s whereabouts should contact local police.

There have been a total of 49,502 persons who have recovered from the virus and 5,952 additional negative test results received since Friday, for a total of 591,380 since testing began. A total of 661,821 individuals have been tested for COVID-19. The combined 14-day positivity rate is 11.1%.
Here in the KJAN listening area: Cass County picked two more positive COVID-19 cases, Friday, for a total of 118; There was one more case in Audubon County (40 total); 4 new cases in Guthrie County (Total 178); Montgomery County has 1 new cases (83 total); Harrison County has two more case (total 154), and there 13 more cases in Pottawattamie County (total 1,708).

Red Oak Police, early this (Saturday) morning, arrested a man for Public Intoxication. Authorities say 36-year old Jeremy Ray Dilocker, of Red Oak, was arrested at around 2:20-a.m. in the 400 block of E. Reed Street. Dilocker was being held in the Montgomery County Jail on a $300 bond.
