JUPITER, Fla. (AP) — Minnesota Twins prospect Miguel Sano hit a long, two-run homer Saturday in a 6-3 win over the St. Louis Cardinals. Sano, a 21-year-old third baseman, missed last season because of Tommy John surgery. He connected off Cardinals reliever Tyler Lyons for a deep drive to left field. Twins starter Ricky Nolasco allowed one run in three innings.

Michael Wacha pitched three scoreless innings in his second outing for the Cardinals. He allowed two singles and struck out two, extending his scoreless streak to five innings. Randal Grichuk hit his team-leading third homer for St. Louis and Mark Reynolds hit his second. Jason Heyward and Yadier Molina each had two hits.

Magneurius Sierra, at 18 the Cardinals’ top position prospect, played in his first spring training game. He went 0 for 3 and made an error in left field.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs are bringing back versatile defensive back Ron Parker on a five-year, $30 million contract, a person familiar with the deal told The Associated Press. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the Chiefs have not announced the deal. Parker’s hometown newspaper, The Beaufort Gazette of South Carolina, was first to report Saturday that the free agent was returning to Kansa City.

Justin Turner, who represents Parker, fielded no shortage of offers for the fourth-year pro after a breakout year with the Chiefs. Parker split time at cornerback and safety, starting 15 of the 16 games he played last season. He finished with 94 tackles and an interception.

Iowa State holds off Oklahoma in Big 12 Semifinals

Sports

March 14th, 2015 by admin

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – No. 13 Iowa State rallied from a double-digit deficit for the fourth straight game, then watched Oklahoma’s Ryan Spangler miss a point-blank layup at the buzzer that gave the Cyclones a 67-65 victory over the No. 15 Sooners in the Big 12 Tournament semifinals Friday night.

Georges Niang had 13 points, Jameel McKay added 12 and Monte Morris had 11 for the second-seeded Cyclones (24-8), who needed a buzzer-beater to beat Texas in the quarterfinals.

The defending champions will play No. 9 Kansas, the top seed, for the title Saturday night.

Buddy Hield had 16 points to lead the Sooners (22-10), who blew an early 11-point lead but still had plenty of chances down the stretch to win the game.

Isaiah Cousins added 14 points, and TaShawn Thomas and Jordan Woodard added 13 points apiece for the fourth-seeded Sooners, who still haven’t played for the title since 2003.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – Nolan Chapman scored 17 points and Treynor rallied from an 11-point deficit in the second half to beat Iowa City Regina 51-46 Friday night and win the Class 2A state championship.

Treynor (24-3) got back in it by trapping Regina’s guards to force turnovers. It took the lead for good at 46-44 when Matt Deitchler went up in a crowd to score on a putback with 2:24 left. The Cardinals then made 5 of 6 free throws to wrap it up and claim their first championship in their 14th trip to state.

Jacob Flathers added 14 points and 11 rebounds for Treynor. Trey Robinson scored 13 points. Deitchler finished with five.

Drew Cook led Regina (22-5) with 23 points, including 5-for-6 3-point shooting. But it wasn’t quite enough to give the Regals their sixth championship.

Gladbrook-Reinbeck beats MVAO 64-52 to win Class 1A title

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Camden Kickbush scored 20 points and Gladbrook-Reinbeck capped a perfect season by beating Maple Valley-Anthon-Oto 64-52 Friday night to win the Class 1A state championship. All-tournament captain Joe Smoldt and Zach Pierce added 10 points each for Gladbrook-Reinbeck (28-0). Gladbrook-Reinbeck shot 61 percent. The team took control with a 14-0 run in the first half and never let up. Kickbush hit three 3-pointers in that run and finished 4-for-5 from long range.

MVAO (26-2) got 26 points from Korey Kuhlmann but couldn’t overcome the Rebels’ torrid shooting and its own second-quarter cold spell. Shawn Flanigan scored 13 for the Rams and Derrik Kerns had 11. The Rams made six of their first seven shots, but missed 11 in a row during Gladbrook-Reinbeck’s second-quarter outburst and never recovered.

Chiefs add long-snapper Winchester as overhaul continues

Sports

March 13th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs have signed long snapper James Winchester to a two-year contract, yet another move in what has turned into a massive roster overhaul this offseason. The signing Friday came one day after the Chiefs traded a fifth-round draft pick to New Orleans for Pro Bowl offensive guard Ben Grubbs and signed offensive lineman Paul Fanaika, a former Cardinals starter.

Kansas City also signed wide receiver Jeremy Maclin and safety Tyvon Branch this week, and released veteran wide receiver Dwayne Bowe in a cost-saving move. Kansas City now has three long snappers on the roster in Winchester, Brandon Hartson and Jorgen Hus, which means the club appears to be moving on from incumbent Thomas Gafford.
