Iowa Answers Question Marks in 2014-15 with Tourney Win

Sports

March 23rd, 2015 by Jim Field

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A late season slide and the loss of its best player left Iowa with a lot of questions mark heading into 2014-15.

The Hawkeyes answered those doubts with a solid season that included their first NCAA Tournament win in 14 years.

Iowa (22-12), whose season ended with an 87-68 loss to second-seeded Gonzaga in Seattle on Sunday night, went 12-6 in the Big Ten and reached the NCAAs in back-to-back seasons for the first time in nine years.

It was also the season that saw senior Aaron White take his place among the great players in school history.

White made up for the absence of departed star Devyn Marble with one of the best seasons a Hawkeye has ever had.

UNI’s Strong Season Ends 1 Game Shy of Sweet 16

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — An NCAA Tournament loss just a game shy of the Sweet 16 shouldn’t obscure what Northern Iowa accomplished this season.

The Panthers showed they can compete with any program in the country when everything falls into place.

During the season, the Panthers rolled past Iowa and reeled off 16 straight wins — including a thrashing of Wichita State — to put the program back in the national spotlight.

Northern Iowa (31-4) set a school record for wins, moved into the top 10 for the first time and won the Missouri Valley conference tournament before losing to Louisville on Sunday night.

Louisville back to Sweet 16 with 66-53 victory over No Iowa

Sports

March 23rd, 2015 by Ric Hanson

SEATTLE (AP) – Rick Pitino and Louisville are heading to the Sweet 16 for the fourth straight year. Terry Rozier scored 25 points Sunday night to lift the fourth-seeded Cards to a 66-53 victory over fifth-seeded Northern Iowa in the NCAA Tournament. Montrezl Harrell added 14 for Louisville (26-8), including a couple of game-sealing alley-oop jams on passes from Rozier. The Cardinals will play eighth-seeded North Carolina State on Friday in an East Region that is now missing the top two seeds.

The Cardinals packed it in against Northern Iowa’s top scorer, Seth Tuttle, holding him to 14 points and only seven shot attempts. The Panthers (31-4) were trying for their first trip to the second weekend since 2010, but it didn’t happen.  Instead, it’s Louisville now two wins away from its third Final Four since 2012.

Shockers beat Jayhawks 78-65 in NCAA Tournament showdown

Sports

March 23rd, 2015 by Ric Hanson

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — No wonder Kansas never wants anything to do with Wichita State. Behind another steady performance from Fred VanVleet and the hot shooting of Evan Wessel, the No. 7 seed Shockers rolled past the second-seeded Jayhawks 78-65 on Sunday, earning a trip to the Sweet 16 at the expense of the school that has caused them so much chagrin.

Tekele Cotton led the way with 19 points for the Shockers (30-4). VanVleet finished with 17 and Wessel hit four 3-pointers to score 12, sending the Missouri Valley champions to Cleveland for the Midwest Regional semifinal against third-seeded Notre Dame.

Devonte’ Graham and Perry Ellis had 17 points each, and Frank Mason added 16 for the Jayhawks (27-9), who blew an early eight-point lead and never really threatened in the second half.

Gonzaga headed back to Sweet 16 after 87-68 win over Iowa

Sports

March 23rd, 2015 by Ric Hanson

SEATTLE (AP) — Kyle Wiltjer scored 13 of his 24 points during Gonzaga’s flawless first half, Domantas Sabonis added 18 points and the second-seeded Bulldogs advanced to the round of 16 for the first time since 2009 with a 87-68 win over No. 7 seed Iowa in a South Region matchup on Sunday.

After five straight departures on the first weekend, the Bulldogs (34-2) are back in the regional semifinals, thanks to efficient offensive performance in the first 20 minutes that Iowa could never overcome. Wiltjer made his first six shots before finally missing a 3-point attempt midway through the second half. Sabonis added eight in the first half, including a thundering left-handed dunk that was followed by a scream that had KeyArena roaring just like Gonzaga’s home gym.

Jared Uthoff led Iowa (22-12) with 20 and Aaron White added 19.

Lackey pitches into fifth in Cardinals’ 8-6 win

Sports

March 22nd, 2015 by Ric Hanson

SARASOTA, Fla. (AP) — John Lackey worked into the fifth inning in his second spring start, allowing four runs as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Baltimore Orioles 8-6 on Sunday. Adam Jones homered twice for Baltimore, driving in four runs and Manny Machado hit a solo home run. Jones hit a three-run homer in the fifth off Mitch Wilson. He also homered in the fourth off Lackey. The center fielder has three home runs this spring. Machado homered and doubled against Lackey.

Bud Norris allowed three runs — one of them unearned in four innings. Matt Adams hit a long two-run home run to center field in the third. Randal Grichuk hit a two run homer in the ninth off Chaz Roe to key a three-run Cardinals ninth.

Iowa women beat Miami 88-70 for Sweet 16 berth

Sports

March 22nd, 2015 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Bethany Doolittle scored 22 points, Ally Disterhoft had 15 and Iowa beat 11th-seeded Miami 88-70 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday, earning its first trip to the Sweet 16 since 1996. Doolittle also had 11 rebounds for the third-seeded Hawkeyes (26-7), who’ll meet either Arkansas or Baylor in Oklahoma City on Friday.

Iowa shot 75 percent in the second half, using a late 15-3 run to seal their 18th straight home win of the season. Jessica Thomas had 20 points for Miami (20-13). The Hurricanes lost six of their last eight games to close the season.

Another chance for Gonzaga to reach Sweet 16 vs. Iowa

Sports

March 22nd, 2015 by Ric Hanson

SEATTLE (AP) — Kevin Pangos insists it’s not pressure that Gonzaga feels to finally get to the second weekend of the NCAA Tournament. It’s hunger to be remembered as the Gonzaga team that snapped the streak of first weekend departures. There may not be a better chance for the second-seeded Bulldogs (33-2) to reach the Sweet 16 than today’s (Sunday’s) matchup with No. 7 seed Iowa. Gonzaga will be playing essentially a home game, just four hours from its campus in an arena where they’re comfortable.

But don’t discredit the Hawkeyes. Iowa (22-11) has road wins this season at North Carolina, Ohio State and Michigan, and was the most impressive of the four winners in Seattle on Friday with its 83-52 blowout of Davidson. And the Hawkeyes can match Gonzaga’s size and athleticism at nearly every position.

Pre-game coverage begins at 5-p.m. on KJAN, with the tip-off at around 6:10.
