AMES, Iowa – Iowa State head coach Fred Hoiberg announced Saturday that junior college forward Darien Williams has been granted a release from his National Letter of Intent with Iowa State University and will not be a part of the men’s basketball program.

“Darien informed me recently that he felt it was in his best interests to attend another school,” Hoiberg said. “We have granted him the release.”

Williams, a 6-8 forward from San Francisco, California, played the 2013-14 season at Iowa Western Community College before attending City College of San Francisco this year, while recovering from shoulder surgery. Williams averaged 16.1 points and 6.7 rebounds in 2013-14 for the Reivers.

Sports Headlines (4/5/15): Badgers end Wildcats’ bid at perfection…Duke advances to final…Indians settle with Kluber

Sports

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The Wisconsin Badgers have moved into the NCAA title game for the first time since 1941 by handing Kentucky its only loss of the season, 71-64 at Indianapolis. AP Player of the Year Frank Kaminsky scored 20 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for the Wisconsin, who were tied at 60 before closing on an 11-4 run in the final 1:42. Kentucky was trying to become the first unbeaten NCAA champion since Indiana in 1976.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Duke is back in the NCAA title game after freshmen Justice Winslow and Jahlil Okafor combined for almost half of the Blue Devils’ points in an 81-61 rout of Michigan State. Winslow got off to a poor start before finishing with a team-high 19 points, one more than Okafor. Senior Quinn Cook had 17 points for the Blue Devils, who shot 51 percent and dominated the game after falling behind 14-6.

CLEVELAND (AP) — A person familiar with the negotiations tells The Associated Press that AL Cy Young Award winner Corey Kluber and the Cleveland Indians have agreed to a five-year contract. The deal includes two club options and is contingent upon him passing medical tests, which should be concluded within the next few days. Kluber went 18-9 with a 2.44 ERA last season, his first full year in the majors.

HOUSTON (AP) — Jordan Speith has the lead after three rounds of the PGA’s Houston Open. He shot a third round 5-under-67 to stand 14-under par, one shot in front of three players, Scott Piercy, Johnson Wagner and Austin Cook. Phil Mickelson entered the round one stroke back before carding a 75 that puts him six off the pace.

RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. (AP) — Sei Young Kim carded a pair of late birdies to take a three-stroke lead over Stacy Lewis through three rounds of the ANA Inspiration, the first LPGA major of the year. She holed a downhill 18-footer from the fringe on the par-4 16th and made a 10-foot birdie putt on the par-3 17th to take command. Kim is 10-under following a 3-under 69.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — Matt Holliday hit his first home run of the spring, Randal Grichuk added his team-high fifth and the St. Louis Cardinals defeated their Triple-A Memphis affiliate 8-1 Friday night.

Busch Stadium installs metal detectors at every gate

Sports

April 3rd, 2015 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) – Busch Stadium has installed walk-through metal detectors at every entry gate in order to comply with Major League Baseball’s new rule that all spectators be scanned before entering any of its 30 stadiums. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that the baseball league issued the order after conferring with the Department of Homeland Security.

The new security system has been met with mixed reactions by fans with some saying that it is a disappointing, but necessary measure. Others said that they were surprised the stadium did not have the detectors in place already.  The home of the St. Louis Cardinals previously used hand-held wands to scan a random sample of people entering the stadium.
