OABCIG will be looking to post an upset when the Falcons host second ranked Underwood in a class 1A quarterfinal round game Friday night. OABCIG coach Larry Allen says his offense needs to solve an Underwood defense that has given up only 53 points and posted six shutouts this season.

Allen says the Falcon offense needs to stay on schedule.

Former teammates will be on opposite sidelines tonight (Friday night), when third ranked Madrid visits number seven AC-GC in a class A quarterfinal round contest. AC-GC coach Cody Mathewson played at Madrid with Tiger coach Brock Hinkle.

Madrid is in search of its first trip to the UNI-Dome since 2011.

The CAM Cougars lost Thursday night to Bishop Garrigan 26-16 in Algona. In the first quarter the Golden Bears were first to strike with a 61 bomb from Tate Foertsch to Justin Bauer. The extra point would go low and right, but Bishop Garrigan had the lead. CAM’s response was a drive down to the 14 where Spieker connected with Jack Follman for a touchdown in the corner of the end zone. A two point conversion later and the Cougars had their first lead 8-6.

Going into the second both teams exchanged one more score. Foertsch would lead his team down the field again and pitched a shovel pass to Ethan Marsh inside the 10 yard line for another touchdown. The game was now 14-8. CAM would answer with a 36 yard spiral to Colin Bower as he walked into the endzone to give the lead back to CAM 16-14.

In the second half the script seemed to be flipped for CAM as their offense was shutdown by Bishop Garrigan. Both teams were held scoreless in the third, but the Golden Bears took advantage of the Cougar’s penalty troubles and turnovers in the 4th quarter to turn the tide. Tate Foertsch scrambled for two touchdowns in the 4th quarter and the Cougars could not find any traction.

The contest ended with Bishop Garrigan in the victory formation and CAM stunned from the outcome. It was a game that saw CAM quarterback Chase Spieker go 14-33, with 2 touchdowns, and 3 interceptions. Throughout the night Spieker looked to Collin Bower who had 5 grabs, with 1 score, and 74 yards.  However the 3 interceptions combined with the 50 penalty yards in the second half were too much for CAM to overcome.

Cougars Head Coach Barry Bower spoke plainly about the loss and the mistakes his team made.

Even with the mistakes and heartbreaking loss, Coach Bower was proud of this year’s Cougar squad.

Most Coaches would look for fault at coming so close to the UNI-Dome and falling short. But Coach Bower wanted to reiterate the pride he had in how his team continued to fight and the great season they achieved.

The 8-player playoff season continues for Winfield-Mt. Union, Bedford, and Gladbrook-Reinbeck as they all advance to the semifinals next week.

A younger Iowa State basketball team is eyeing another trip to the NCAA Tournament. The Cyclones open Monday night at home against Wisconsin-Green Bay and expectations are high after two straight NCAA appearances under third-year coach T.J. Otzelberger.

It won’t be murderers row the first two months. The Cyclones have nine home games in nonconference play and six will be against teams ranked 300 or lower in the KenPom preseason ratings.

Otzelberger says the schedule is designed to help the Cyclones get into the NCAA Tournament.

It will be Iowa State’s run defense against the Kansas ground game on Saturday night when the teams collide in Jack Trice Stadium. The Cyclone defense ranks second in the Big 12 against the run and has eliminated big plays that plagued it early in the season.

That’s junior safety Beau Freyler. The Jayhawks are averaging nearly 212 yards on the ground in conference play.

Freyler says the goal is to make Kansas throw the ball.

IOWA CITY, Iowa – The reigning National Player of the Year, Caitlin Clark, was named to the Wade Trophy Preseason Watch List by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association on Thursday. The Wade Trophy is given to the most outstanding women’s college basketball player in the country.

Clark won the Wade Trophy last season and was a finalist her sophomore year.

Clark was voted 2023-24 Big Ten Preseason Player of the Year, while being a unanimous First Team All-Big Ten selection. She was also named an AP Preseason All-American and to the Nancy Lieberman Watch List earlier last month.

The Wade Trophy — now in its 47th year — is the oldest and most prestigious national player of the year award in college women’s basketball. It is named in honor of the late, legendary Delta State University head coach Lily Margaret Wade, who won three consecutive national championships with the Lady Statesmen. First awarded in 1978 by the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD), now known as SHAPE America, the Wade Trophy has been presented to the WBCA NCAA Division I Player of the Year since 2001.

In exhibition play this season, Clark posted the first triple-double in Kinnick Stadium history against DePaul. She added 24 points, nine assists, and four rebounds in Iowa’s win over Clarke University in only 20 minutes of action.

The third ranked Hawkeyes are set to open the regular season against Fairleigh Dickinson inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena at 6:30 p.m. (CT) on Nov. 6. The game will air on B1G+ (subscription required) and on the Hawkeye Radio Network.
