Escobar’s HR in 10th lifts Nationals over Cardinals 2-1

Sports

April 22nd, 2015 by Ric Hanson

WASHINGTON (AP) — Yunel Escobar homered to left with two outs in the bottom of the 10th inning, then celebrated with a head-first slide into home plate, lifting the Washington Nationals to a 2-1 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday night.

It was the second homer of the season for Escobar, who was supposed to be Washington’s second baseman but is filling in at third base while Anthony Rendon is on the disabled list. Escobar connected with the first pitch he saw from Carlos Villanueva (1-1), the seventh pitcher for the Cardinals, who had won five consecutive games.

The Nationals have won five of their past six games to get back to .500 after starting the year 2-6. Aaron Barrett (2-0) earned the win by pitching the 10th.

Cubs Promote Highly Touted Prospect Addison Russell

Sports

April 21st, 2015 by Jim Field

PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Chicago Cubs called up highly touted infielder Addison Russell on Tuesday. The 21-year-old Russell will start at second base and bat ninth when the Cubs play the Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday night.

Russell was the centerpiece of the blockbuster trade that sent pitcher Jeff Samardzija to Oakland last summer. The 11th overall pick in the 2012 amateur draft, Russell hit .318 with four doubles and a home run for Triple-A Iowa.

Russell is the second prospect to be called up by Chicago in the last week. Third baseman Kris Bryant is hitting .429 in four games and had three RBI in a win over Pittsburgh on Monday.

Chicago transferred third baseman Mike Olt to the 60-day disabled list and optioned infielder Arismendy Alcantara to Triple-A.

Royals’ Herrera Suspended, Ventura Fined for Incident vs A’s

Sports

April 21st, 2015 by Jim Field

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Major League Baseball suspended Kansas City’s Kelvin Herrera for five games and fined him and fellow pitcher Yordano Ventura after both targeted Brett Lawrie during a testy series against Oakland over the weekend.

Herrera was tossed in the eighth inning of Sunday’s game after throwing behind Lawrie. Ventura was ejected from Saturday’s game when he hit Lawrie with a pitch after Josh Reddick’s home run.

Both incidents came after Lawrie’s hard slide into Alcides Escobar injured the left knee of the Kansas City shortstop on Friday and caused benches to clear. Escobar called it a “dirty slide” and did not play Saturday or Sunday.

MLB did not disclose the amounts of the fines. Herrera can appeal his suspension or it can take effect beginning Tuesday night against Minnesota.

Former Navy Lieutenant Called Up by Cardinals

Sports

April 21st, 2015 by Jim Field

WASHINGTON (AP) — Former Navy man Mitch Harris has made it to the majors, ready to join the St. Louis Cardinals’ bullpen.

The 29-year-old pitcher is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy. The Hall of Fame says it believes the only Naval Academy graduate to appear in the major leagues was pitcher Nemo Gaines for the 1921 Washington Senators.

Harris is a 2008 Naval Academy graduate who had the rank of second lieutenant. He was selected by the Cardinals on the 13th round of the 2008 amateur draft and started his professional baseball career in 2013.

Harris tweeted: “What a journey… the dream has come true. From Navy to MLB. Looking forward to what the future holds.

Harris, who is from Ocala, Florida, had a 1.86 ERA in eight spring training appearances for the Cardinals this year.

St. Louis placed outfielder Peter Bourjos on the paternity leave list Tuesday and selected the contract of Harris from Triple-A Memphis. The right-hander had two saves and a 2.45 ERA for Memphis this year.

St. Louis designated outfielder Gary Brown for assignment to open a spot on the 40-man roster.

Outstanding High School Seniors to be Honored at Governor’s Scholar Recognition Ceremony

News, Sports

April 21st, 2015 by Jim Field

WEST DES MOINES, IOWA – April 20, 2015 – 436 high school seniors from across Iowa will be honored Sunday, April 26, 2015, at the 13th Annual Governor’s Scholar Recognition Ceremony, held at Hy-Vee Hall in Des Moines starting at 1:00 p.m.

The Governor’s Office, the Iowa High School Athletic Association, and its title sponsor, the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation, are presenting this recognition program.

The Honorable Governor Terry Branstad will host the event and address the audience of 2,500-plus. Iowa Farm Bureau President Craig Hill; Dr. Craig Scott, Chairperson of the Board of Control of the Iowa High School Athletic Association; and Clemencia Spizzirri, 2015 Iowa Teacher of the Year, will also deliver messages to the students and their guests. Spizzirri’s message will be a video as her Iowa Teacher of the Year duties require her to travel to Washington D.C. at the time of the ceremony.

The seniors being honored were selected by their high schools as their highest academic achievers. Each student will receive a photo plaque of themselves with Governor Branstad and a certificate to commemorate their achievement. Each student’s most influential teacher will also receive a certificate of appreciation. A reception for the students, their parents, their most influential teachers, and other guests will follow the ceremony.

In addition to being recognized as the state’s brightest students, over 98 percent of the group participates in school activities, with approximately 76 percent participating in at least one interscholastic sport. Nearly 60 percent plan to pursue their post-secondary education in Iowa.

Following the April 26 ceremony, the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation will be sending the honoree’s hometown newspaper a short news release and a photo of Governor Branstad congratulating the student.

A list of this year’s honorees (ordered alphabetically by high school) is available HERE.
