Holliday, Wong power Cardinals victory Friday

Sports

May 9th, 2015 by admin

PITTSBURGH (AP) – Matt Holliday and Kolten Wong hit three-run homers and Michael Wacha remained unbeaten as the St. Louis Cardinals held off the Pittsburgh Pirates 8-5 on Friday night.

Holliday sent a towering shot to left-center off Francisco Liriano (1-2) in the third inning and Wong put it away with a drive over the Clemente Wall in right off Arquimedes Caminero in the seventh. Jhonny Peralta also homered for the Cardinals, who have won 10 of 11.

Wong finished with three hits. Trevor Rosenthal worked the ninth for his 11th save as the Cardinals improved to a major-league best 22-7. Wacha (5-0) produced six workmanlike innings, giving up three runs and six hits with one strikeout.

Starling Marte had three hits for Pittsburgh and Andrew McCutchen, Neil Walker and Francisco Cervelli added two each.

Idea to turn Onawa airport into drag strip takes wing

May 8th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

ONAWA, Iowa (AP) – Onawa officials plan to turn their little used municipal airport into a drag strip. City administrator Bradley Hansen told the Sioux City Journal that officials are hoping to have at least one racing date this year.

The Onawa City Council voted in April to close the airport, which is used primarily by private pilots, aerial sprayers and traveling doctors. Hansen says four of its five hangars are occupied. Its closure is scheduled for July 1.

Officials have not determined whether the drag strip would be funded privately or with local taxes.

Lackey drives in run to lead Cardinals over Cubs 5-1

Sports

May 7th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — John Lackey drove in a run for the third time in his big league career and struck out 10 in 7 2-3 innings, helping the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Chicago Cubs 5-1 Thursday for their ninth win in 10 games. Jason Heyward singled three times with an RBI, and Peter Bourjos hit a run-scoring triple for the NL Central leaders, who took three of four from the second-place Cubs.

Lackey had been 6 for 67 at the plate in 13 major league seasons before a two-out, opposite-field RBI double to right in the fourth. Bourjos, who had been on first base, scored for a 4-0 lead on an error by Jorge Soler who, with his back to the plate, missed the ball as he tried to glove it between his legs near the foul line.

IHSAA Announces 2015 Football Players Hall of Fame Inductees

Sports

May 7th, 2015 by Jim Field

Six former prep players who achieved high school greatness will be honored by the Iowa High School Athletic Association with Hall of Fame induction at the 2015 Playoff Championships this fall.

The induction ceremonies will be featured at the halftime of the Class 4A Championship game the evening of Friday, November 20 in the University of Northern Iowa Dome.

Included among the new inductees and their year of graduation are Shamus McDonough of Corning (1978); Todd Millikan from Shenandoah (1984); Joel Crisman of Grundy Center (1989); Matt Straight from Logan-Magnolia (1991); Derek Sobaski of Pekin (1999); and Jason Scales who played at Valley, West Des Moines (2004).

Each of the six was a first team All-State player and a multiple sport athlete. Collectively, they also appeared in eight State Championship games. Five went on to play at the Division I level, and each has found ways to give back to the game and their communities.

The IHSAA Football Players Hall of Fame was started in 1980 by the Board of Control and this 36th honored class brings the total to 172 players from 108 schools. The Iowa Football Coaches Association will announce their coach hall of fame selections and the Walt Fiegel Coaching with Character Award winner later this fall. Those honorees will also be recognized at the championship games.
