COLUMBUS, Ohio — University of Iowa women’s soccer downed No. 12 Wisconsin, 1-0, on Sunday at Lower.com Field to win its second Big Ten Tournament Championship in program history.

Iowa is the first eighth-seed to win the conference tournament. The Hawkeyes clinched the league’s at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament, adding a third consecutive ranked win to their resume. In program history, Iowa has never dropped three ranked teams in a row.

The Hawkeyes improve to 12-4-4 (3-4-3) heading into NCAA Tournament action. The shutout marks Iowa’s 12^th clean sheet this season, matching a program record during Head Coach Dave DiIanni’s first season in 2014.

[Freshmen Millie Greer and Eva Pattison] have got two seniors on either side of them in Sam Cary and Maggie Johnston. [That said] we have asked a lot of them this year. Every situation in different games is new to them, and they have been able to be resilient and adjust to it. Quite honestly, they have been good leaders for us. They are bracketed with Macy [Enneking] behind them, so we have got good leadership for them, but we are really proud of them.

We need a little bit of rest, and we need to get healthy, but we all feel good here with the trophy. We are hoping that we can get a [strong] seed, and we are really proud to be in it.”

PRINCETON, N.J. – The University of Iowa women’s wrestling team is coming home with a total of ten top three finishes, including six champions from the Princeton Open this Sunday at the Jadwin Gymnasium.

Hawkeyes Wrap Up Fall Season at Princeton

PRINCETON, N.J. – The University of Iowa rowing team finished its final event of the fall season at the Princeton Chase on Lake Carnegie.

Iowa competed against some of the top teams in the nation, in the eight’s and four’s women’s open.

UI competed against a stacked field consisting of, No. 3 Princeton and No. 8 Penn, as well as Big Ten rivals, No. 15 Rutgers and No. 17 Indiana. In the women’s open four, Iowa placed 3^rd overall.

The Hawkeyes will open up their spring season in Orlando, Fla. on Feb. 9 with an exhibition against the University of Central Florida.

“The Princeton Chase, once again, served as an amazing test for the Hawkeyes. Getting to race some of the top teams in the country really helped to test our resilience as a team and our results show some real promise for the spring season. We learned a lot about racing today and have our sights set on improving through winter training.”

MASSILLON, Ohio– No. 10 Iowa State opened its season with a 43-3 victory over Cleveland State Sunday afternoon inside David Carr’s high school gymnasium at Perry High School. Carr capped the Cyclones’ season-opening win with a fall in 1:47, earning himself UFC Fight Pass Most Outstanding Wrestler.

Four Cyclones – Caleb Helgeson, Nando Villaescusa, Evan Frost and Anthony Echemendia – made their debuts in the ISU dual lineup against the Vikings, all securing wins.

Iowa State won the takedown battle against Cleveland State, 47-6. All nine of ISU’s individual bout victories came with bonus points.

MJ Gaitan started his redshirt freshman season with a commanding 19-3 major decision over Cleveland State’s Ronald Dimmerling. The California native used five takedowns, four of which came in the first period, and three near fall points in the win.

At 184 pounds, Helgeson picked up a 14-3 major decision over Joey Lyons to give Iowa State a 9-0 advantage in the team score.

Villaescusa was solid in a 16-8 upset over No. 24 Ben Smith at 197 pounds. Villaescusa gave up an early takedown but controlled the rest of the way, wracking up over two minutes of riding time in the win.

Yonger Bastida put on a takedown clinic at heavyweight. He took down No. 28 Daniel Bucknavich eight times in a 26-10 tech fall in 6:03.

A takedown at the buzzer paired with a riding time point gave Kysen Terukina a tech fall against Ben Aranda in 7:00. Iowa State led, 23-0, at the halfway point in the dual.

Evan Frost got stronger throughout the match in a 17-3 major decision against Jake Manley. After a scoreless first, Frost used a four-takedown third period to secure his first career dual victory.

Jacob Frost couldn’t overcome a pair of seven-point moves from No. 27 Dylan Layton at 141 pounds. Frost registered four takedowns and a pair of reversals in the comeback effort, but fell short, 22-18.

At 149 pounds, Anthony Echemendia used seven takedowns and three near fall points for a dominant 24-7 tech fall over Douglas Terry.

Jason Kraisser gave up the first takedown against Shane Heil but wouldn’t let his opponent score again. Kriasser tallied eight near fall points in a 19-3 tech fall.

In the dual’s featured bout at 165 pounds, Carr wasted no time taking out CSU’s Daniel Patten. The Ohio native used a ‘Dresser Dump’ to earn the fall in 1:47.

RIVERSIDE, California – The second-ranked University of Iowa wrestling team won all 10 matches – eight via bonus points – in a 40-0 shutout of California Baptist on Saturday evening in its season opener at the Dale E. and Sarah Ann Fowler Events Center.

The Hawkeyes had two technical falls and six major decisions, while having a 31-1 advantage in takedowns as they notched their first victory of the 2023-24 season in blowout fashion.

“Guys that had opportunities came out ready to wrestle,” said associate head coach Terry Brands. “Looking to score points and for the most part they are wrestling through and protecting themselves with great wrestling position. Building leads. I learned that we have a room full of competitors. I learned that what I thought of knew, I knew. It’s every week though, now it’s in the past we gotta move forward.”

Iowa stormed out to a 13-0 lead in the first three matches. Sophomore Drake Ayala picked up a ranked win over Elijah Griffin via a major decision. Senior Brody Teske used a big third period to put away Hunter Leake with a major decision before Real Woods used just 2:04 to record a technical fall against Darren Green.

The next three weights saw three new faces make the Hawkeye debuts. Sophomore Victor Voinovich recorded a, 2-0, decision over Dayne Morton before grad student Jared Franek closed out the first half of the dual with an, 8-1, decision over Drayden Morton. Sophomore Michael Caliendo recorded the Hawkeyes second technical fall of the night and their first of five straight bonus point victories out of the break over Mateo De La Pena.

I felt great, you know, not really more to it. I mean, I train every day, so no business as usual,” said Caliendo. “Business as usual you know, there’s not really any nerves. All the training is done once you get here. Just go out on the mat and do what I know how to do best, wrestle.”

Redshirt Freshman Aiden Riggins gave Iowa a bonus point victory after getting a pair of takedowns in the third period to defeat Peter Acciardi, 15-4. Grad student Brennan Swafford earned a major decision after a roll through in the second period led to a reversal and four near fall to break a scoreless tie and set Swafford up for what ultimately became a, 15-4, major decision over Nathan Haas.

“That’s just years of scrambling and stuff in the wrestling room, just getting after it,” said Swafford. “You get in those crazy situations all the time, especially when you go with guys like Cobe Siebrecht or back in the day when Kemerer was still around, he and him would get in crazy scrambles. And it really helped me grow in that aspect. So, I’m comfortable there. I like rolling around.”

Iowa closed out the dual with an 11-2 Zach Glazier major decision at 197 pounds over Eli Sheeran and a 16-4 major decision win from Bradley Hill at 285.

The ACGC Chargers and the Madrid Tigers fought tooth and nail right down to the wire in a highly anticipated football game. Both teams played a similar style of ball trying to get the rushing attack going. The offenses both helped their teams get this far but the quarterfinal was dominated by both defenses. The Tigers got a perfect start as they forced a quick punt from the Chargers who took the ball after winning the coin toss. The Tigers would start at their own 13 yard line where Preston Wicker and the Tiger offense began to march down the field. After a completion to Jayce Fuson on 3rd and 20 set the Tigers up inside the 10 yard line Nash Ramirez took the handoff 9 yards for a touchdown to put the Tigers on the board first.

In the second quarter the Tigers forced another Chargers punt and were driving the field again when Ramirez fumbled the ball to give it back to the Chargers. Both defenses didn’t budge in the second quarter and forced each team to punt before ACGC would run the clock out and go into the halftime break trailing just 7-0. And the second half is where the games momentum flipped several times.

On the first play of the second half Ramirez would fumble the ball again and this time setting the Chargers up inside the 25 yard line. Michael Fuller would take the handoff and bust it to the outside where he would beat the Tigers defenders to the endzone for a 18 yard score to tie things up. After a 3 and out the Tigers had a punt that was shanked out of bounds giving the Chargers the ball in opponent territory where they took advantage as quarterback Jathan South would fight for a three yard touchdown score giving the Chargers their first lead of the night.

The game would come down to the final possessions of the game. The Tigers had a 4th and long at the Charger 26 when Preston Wicker threw a ball over the middle of the field to Jayce Fuson who made an incredible catch through traffic for the score to give the Tigers the lead for good in the final minutes. The Chargers put together a good drive but just the third pass attempt of the night by Jathan South was tipped and intercepted by the Tigers to secure a 21-14 victory and advancing to the UNI dome for Class Semifinal next week. m

Chargers head Coach Cody Matthewson praised his defense and credits Madrid for making the 50/50 play in the endzone.

There are plays in this game the Chargers would love to have back and do differently but Coach Matthewson said you can’t look at just one play.

Both teams left everything they had on the field and Coach Matthewson couldn’t be more proud of the fight his Chargers team played through.

The Chargers had an incredible season reaching 10 wins and one game away from the final four, when asked about what he would remember about the 2023 football season Coach Matthewson said the development that the coaches and players took pride in getting better day in and day out.

The Madrid tigers advance to the semifinal next week at the UNI Dome where they will take on West Hancock for a chance to move on to the Class A state championship.

Iowa State looks to maintain at least a share of the Big 12 lead by hosting Kansas under the lights. The key for the Cyclones is slowing down a Jayhak run game that is averaging better than 213 yards per game in conference play.

That’s ISU coach Matt Campbell who says Kansas has an experienced offense.

Campbell says it is too early to start looking at the standings.

Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz hopes the developments of this week are not a distracton as the Hawkeyes get set to play Northwestern in Wrigley Field. The week began with the announcement that Brian Ferentz will not return next season as offensive coordinator.

Ferentz says the Hawkeyes can’t afford to be distracted.

At, 4-4 Northwestern is considered a pleasant surprise under interim coach David Braun.

IOWA CITY, Iowa – University of Iowa student-athletes Bailey Ortega (volleyball) and Tory Taylor (football) were named October’s Student-Athletes of the Month, the Iowa Student-Athlete Advisory Committee announced.

Ortega, a senior from Davenport, Iowa, reached 2,000-career assists on Oct. 20 at Penn State. She is the 10th Hawkeye in program history to achieve the milestone. Heading into November, Ortega has 2,062 assists – 97 away from moving to ninth all-time at Iowa. The senior setter led the team with 168 assists in October.

The Hawkeyes head east for a match at Michigan on Friday at 5:30 p.m. (CT) before a contest at Michigan State on Saturday at 6 p.m. Both matches will be streamed on B1G+ (subscription required).

Taylor, a senior punter from Melbourne, Australia, averaged 48.9 yards on 24 punts in October. Ten punts traveled 50+ yards, including a 62-yarder at Wisconsin to tie a season high. 11 of Taylor’s punts were downed inside the 20-yard line. He was named to six midseason first-team All-America teams (Associated Press, ESPN, FOX, The Athletic, Sporting News, CBS). Taylor ranks first in the country in total punts and third in average yards per punt.

Iowa will travel to Chicago on Saturday to face Northwestern in the Wildcats Classic at Wrigley Field. The game will begin at 2:30 p.m. (CT) and will be streamed on Peacock (subscription required).
