FAYE JACOBSEN, 80, of Harlan, died Wed., April 13th. Funeral services for FAYE JACOBSEN will be held 1-p.m. Monday, April 18th, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Harlan. Pauley-Jones Funeral Home in Harlan has the arrangements.

Visitation at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Harlan, is on Monday, April 18th, from 11-a.m. until the time of service.

Burial is in the Harlan Cemetery.

FAYE JACOBSEN is survived by:

Her daughter – Lisa (Chris Pilzer) Kardell, of Alexandria,VA.

Her son – Kevin (Jill) Kardell, of Lee’s Summit, MO.

Her sisters – Rachel Dolly, of Irwin & and Sandi Gruhn, of Manilla.

2 grandchildren.

GERTRUDE MATTHIES, 100, of Atlantic, died Thursday, April 14th, at the Heritage House, in Atlantic. A Mass of Christian Burial for GERTRUDE MATTHIES will be held 10:30-a.m. Tuesday, April 19th, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, in Walnut. Pauley-Jones Funeral Home in Avoca has the arrangements.

The family will greet friends at the funeral home on Monday, April 18th, from 5-until 7-p.m., with a Rosary at 7-p.m.

Burial is in the Layton Township Cemetery in Walnut.

GERTRUDE MATTHIES is survived by:

Her Husband – Fred Matthies, of Atlantic.

Her daughter – Darla (Sherman) Snyder, of Walnut.

Her sons – Douglas (Margo) Matthies, of Walnut, & Robert (Verna) Matthies, of Anita.

14 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren, & her daughter- and sister-in-laws.

STACY LYNN ROCK, 53, of Avoca, died Thursday, April 14th, at Methodist Hospital. Funeral services for STACY ROCK will be held 11-a.m. Wed., April 20th, at the Pauley-Jones Funeral Home, in Avoca.

The family will greet friends at the funeral home, on Tue., April 9th, from 5-until 8-p.m.

Her husband – Kyle Rock, of Avoca.

Her Mother – Phyllis Fouts, of Dunlap.

Her Father – Jim (Peggy) Fouts of Dow City

Her brothers – Jamie (LuAnne) Fouts, of Cedar Falls, & Luke Fouts (special friend Nikki), of Dunlap.

Iowa State announces change in student section location at Jack Trice Stadium

The Iowa State student section at Jack Trice Stadium is being moved. Iowa State Athletic Director Jamie Pollard sent an email to students on Thursday about the change beginning with the 2022 season.

The sections will move from X-ZZ and 37-41 to sections O-T and 23-27 in the southeast corner of the stadium. The visiting team fan section will move to section 41.

In the email Pollard stated that safety has become a concern during field rush situations that have occurred after big wins. The students entering the field conflict with the path of the opposing team leaving the field. The hope is that the move will eliminate that potential issue. The number of seats for students will slightly increase with the move as well.

Atlantic Head Coach Ed Den Beste: “Once again a cold and windy day for golf at Fox Run. Going into this meet, we knew we could play better and had a good shot of winning it. Lane continued his good play.  Garrett also played pretty well. Need to see him get into the 70s though.  Cruz has really picked up his game.  Good to see him in the mid 80s.  Roth had a tough start but came back and finished ok.  Cooper shot his best this year which is good to see. Tristan had a lot of struggles today. Hopefully he can fix a few things and get it back to where he can compete for top 4. We will head to Denison next week on Tuesday for a JV/Varsity match.”

Advocates for victims of sexual assault applaud focus on prevention in new federal law

(Radio Iowa) – Iowans who are advocates for victims of sexual assault say they’re pleased the re-authorized Violence Against Women Act includes money for prevention efforts as well as services for victims. Iowa Senator Joni Ernst hosted an event today (Thursday) to hear from Iowans who work with sexual assault survivors.

“We have actually increased the authorization that will be going to these specific programs that address prevention,” Ernst says. The updated Violence Against Women Act provides new housing protections for victims as well as new investment in culturally-specific programs. Tiahni Carrasco a sexual assault prevention specialist with Amani Community Services, working with black middle school students in Waterloo.

“It’s important for survivors, but it’s also important that we stop it before it’s happening,” she says. “That middle school age is a primary target for sexual assaults happening.” Mira Yusef is executive director of Monsoon, an origination with offices in Des Moines and Iowa City that works to end human trafficking and violence against Asians and Pacific Islanders.

“Prevention is so crucial,” she says. “Man and boys who mostly are the perpetrators, the harm-doers of sexual violence…How do we prevent that?…How can we then extend that to the elementary school age, to the middle school, to have the discussion about healthy relationships?”

Kellie Markey is the founder of Dorothy’s House, a residential home for victims of human trafficking. She says pornography is distorting what young people, in particular, view as a healthy behavior. “It literally changes the way people, and children especially, view what sexual relationships are supposed to look like and what’s o.k. to do in those environments,” she says. “Every child in our community is presented and pushed porn by the time they’re in fifth grade, at the latest, and it’s starting create trends that we see in the normalization of these behaviors against people that are going to be a bigger and bigger problem.”

Markey was among more than a dozen people Senator Ernst invited to a round-table discussion of the Violence Against Women Act. A month ago, President Biden approved a bipartisan plan to reauthorize the law for five more years.

Shenandoah man arrested on drug charges

An investigation into illegal drug activity in Page County, resulted in the arrest at around 1:13-a.m. Thursday, of a Shenandoah man. The Page County Sheriff’s Office reports Deputies arrested 29-year-old Cory Daniel Archer near the 800 block of South Avenue, in Shenandoah.

Archer was arrested on charges of Prohibited Acts – Drug trafficking more than 5 grams – Methamphetamine (Class B Felony), Prohibited Acts – Drug trafficking less than 5 grams – Methamphetamine (Class C Felony), two (2) counts of Possession of a Controlled Substance 3rd or subsequent offense – Methamphetamine (Class C Felony), Gatherings where controlled substances unlawfully used (Class D Felony), Drug tax stamp violation (Class D Felony), Conspiracy (Class D Felony), and Possession of Drug paraphernalia (Simple Misdemeanor).

Archer was transported to the Page County Jail where he is being held on $100,000.00 cash only bond after an initial appearance before a Magistrate.

AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State Athletics Department is back on the road!

The annual Cyclone Tailgate Tour, powered by MidAmerican Energy, returns after a two-year virtual pit stop as Iowa State coaches and staff embark on a 12-stop tour across Iowa this May. Each stop on the tour is open to Cyclone fans of all ages and FREE to attend.

The Cyclone Tailgate Tour provides fans the opportunity to interact with Iowa State administrators and coaches, including Athletics Director Jamie Pollard, the “Voice of the Cyclones” John Walters, football coach Matt Campbell, women’s basketball coach Bill Fennelly, men’s basketball coach T.J. Otzelberger, volleyball coach Christy Johnson-Lynch and wrestling coach Kevin Dresser.
