Carlos Martinez helps Cardinals rally past Marlins 4-3

Sports

June 24th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

MIAMI (AP) — Right-hander Carlos Martinez shook off a slow start and a fastball that hit him in the right shoulder to pitch seven innings, helping the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Miami Marlins 4-3 Tuesday.

Martinez (8-3) trailed 3-0 after 1 1-3 innings before settling down. He retired the final seven batters he faced, including three after taking a 94-mph fastball in the shoulder while trying to bunt in the seventh.

Martinez struck out nine and allowed eight hits. He gave up a two-run homer in the first inning to major league home run and RBI leader Giancarlo Stanton, a shot estimated at 484 feet. That matched Stanton’s previous longest this year, and he now has 26 homers, including the longest two in the majors in 2015. Justin Heyward hit his eighth homer for the Cardinals.

Virginia’s 3-0 win over Vandy forces Game 3 in CWS finals

Sports

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Surprise starter Adam Haseley and Josh Sborz combined on the shutout, senior utility man Thomas Woodruff drove in two runs, and the Cavaliers defeated Vanderbilt 3-0 on Tuesday night to force a winner-take-all game in the College World Series.

For the second year in a row, these two teams will go the distance in the best-of-three finals. Vanderbilt (51-20) will be playing for a second straight national title on Wednesday. Virginia (43-24) will be looking for its first.

Haseley, the Cavaliers’ regular center fielder, hadn’t pitched since May 23. The freshman gave coach Brian O’Connor all he could have hoped for, working into the sixth inning for his longest outing and turning over a scoreless game to Sborz (7-2).

Virginia broke through against Vandy starter Phil Pfeifer (6-5) for three unearned runs in the sixth after he had retired the first two batters.

Iowa expecting dip in season ticket sales

Sports

June 23rd, 2015 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa expects its number of season tickets sold to drop by as many as 4,000 this fall. The Hawkeyes finished 2014 with just under 40,000 season ticket holders. Athletic director Gary Barta says the Hawkeyes anticipate selling between 35,000 to 37,000 of those to the general public by next season.

Iowa’s overall ticket sales have plunged in the past few years, and a blowout bowl loss to Tennessee in January following a 7-5 regular season didn’t help. Next season’s home schedule is tepid, highlighted by Pitt, Minnesota, Purdue and Illinois.

But the Hawkeyes finished 22nd nationally in 2014 with nearly 68,000 fans per game, and Barta says they believe an increase on that average is “attainable.”

Iowa St releases non-conference hoops schedule

June 23rd, 2015 by Ric Hanson

AMES, Iowa (AP) – Iowa State will face the likes of Colorado, Cincinnati, Virginia Tech and Texas A&M as part of a non-conference schedule next season. The Cyclones will host Chicago State and Chattanooga after opening against the Buffaloes in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.  Iowa State will play the Hokies and then either Illinois or UAB – which stunned the Cyclones in last year’s NCAA Tournament – in the Emerald Coast Classic in Florida.

Iowa State hosts rivals Iowa at home and Northern Iowa in Des Moines. North Dakota State, Buffalo, Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Coppin State round out its non-conference home schedule. The Cyclones will interrupt their round-robin Big 12 slate by playing at Texas A&M on Jan. 30. The schedule was released Tuesday.

Cubs call up OF Szczur from Triple-A, takes Schwarber’s spot

Sports

June 22nd, 2015 by Ric Hanson

CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago Cubs have recalled outfielder Matt Szczur from Triple-A Iowa to take the roster spot that was held by productive rookie Kyle Schwarber. Szczur is in the starting lineup in left field for Monday night’s game against the Los Angeles Dodgers. He is beginning his fourth stint of the season with the Cubs, and has hit .167 with six RBIs in 23 games.

Schwarber was sent to Triple-A after driving in two runs during Chicago’s 8-0 win at Minnesota on Sunday. The 22-yearold catcher hit .364 with one homer and six RBIs in six games after making his big league debut.

The Cubs had called up Schwarber from Double-A Tennessee to primarily be the designated hitter during a string of interleague games at AL parks. He was the overall No. 4 pick in last year’s draft and will be making his first appearance at the Triple-A level.
