Braves avoid sweep with 3-2 victory over Cardinals

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Adonis Garcia’s first career home run broke a tie and rookie Matt Wisler worked seven strong innings in helping the Atlanta Braves to a 3-2 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday. Wisler (5-1) limited the Cardinals to seven hits and walked three in his longest outing since he worked eight innings to beat the Mets in his debut June 19.

The Braves took advantage of Michael Wacha’s wildness for a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Ryan Lavarnway doubled into the left-field corner to score Eury Perez, who had worked a one-out walk. Following a two-out walk to Jace Peterson, Cameron Maybin singled in Lavarnaway. Wacha needed 51 pitches to get through the first two innings.

The Cardinals evened the score with runs in the fourth and fifth. Matt Holliday’s double into the right-field corner scored Kolten Wong, who had doubled, to tie the game in the fifth.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Pinch-hitter Stephen Piscotty got his first career RBI with a sacrifice fly in the eighth inning and Carlos Martinez outdueled former teammate Shelby Miller as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Atlanta Braves 1-0 on Saturday night. The Cardinals won their fifth in a row despite getting just two hits. They lead the majors with a 63-34 record.

Martinez (11-4) made his first post-All-Star break start and allowed six hits in eight innings with six strikeouts and one walk, which was intentional. He worked the last four innings and took the loss in an 18-inning setback to the Mets on Sunday.

Randy Choate got the last two outs for his first save. Cardinals closer Trevor Rosenthal has gotten two games off after working three in a row. Miller (5-7) allowed a run on two hits in 7 1-3 innings. The right-hander is 0-6 in his last 12 games, the longest winless slump by a Braves starter since Kenshin Kawakami went 14 games between victories in 2010.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals have added newly acquired reliever Steve Cishek to the roster and optioned rookie lefty Tim Cooney to Triple-A Memphis. The NL Central leaders made the move Saturday, a day after Cooney earned his first win in the majors this year by pitching seven strong innings against Atlanta.

St. Louis got Cishek, a sidearming right-hander who has closing experience, from the Miami Marlins in exchange for Double-A pitcher Kyle Barraclough on Friday. The 29-year-old Cishek was 2-6 with three saves and a 4.50 ERA. He was demoted to Double-A earlier this season but had an 0.71 ERA in 13 games since returning to Miami in mid-June.

Cooney is 1-0 with a 3.16 ERA in six starts for St. Louis.

TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) — Police say Arizona Cardinals rookie receiver Damond Powell Jr. was wounded by gunfire outside his Ohio home. Toledo Police say the 22-year-old Powell was wounded in his driveway from shots fired from a car Friday evening. A University of Toledo Medical Center staffer said Saturday she had no information to release about him, but police had said his injuries didn’t appear to be life-threatening.

Police say witnesses reported seeing three men wearing masks in a gold-colored vehicle. Powell was signed this year as a free agent wide receiver by the Cardinals after two years at the University of Iowa. He was a star football and basketball player at Toledo’s Rogers High School.
