ST. LOUIS (AP) — Matt Carpenter hit a pair of home runs and Greg Garcia’s bases-loaded walk capped a three-run rally in the ninth inning as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Colorado Rockies 9-8 on Thursday night. Carpenter went 4 for 5 with four RBIs after moving back to the leadoff spot. It was his first career multihomer game and he has a career-high 12 home runs this season.

Jhonny Peralta’s two-run single off Rockies closer John Axford tied the game at 8-all and Garcia’s walk scored Kolten Wong as the Cardinals recorded their seventh walk-off win of the season. Axford (3-5) took his third loss in his last four outings. Cardinals starter Carlos Martinez gave up five runs on 10 hits in five innings. Carlos Villanueva (4-3) earned the win.

Indians trade outfielder Moss to Cardinals

July 31st, 2015 by Ric Hanson

CLEVELAND (AP) — The Cleveland Indians have traded outfielder Brandon Moss to the St. Louis Cardinals. In return, Cleveland will receive minor league pitcher Rob Kaminsky. The Cardinals haven’t scored in 22 consecutive innings and Matt Holliday re-injured his right quadriceps Wednesday. It’s the same injury that caused the seven-time All-Star to miss 31 games. The Cardinals lead the NL Central by 4 1/2 games over Pittsburgh.

Cleveland signed Moss as a free agent during the offseason. He had 15 homers and 50 RBIs in 94 games but the Indians have fallen back in the AL wild-card race. Moss played four seasons in the NL with Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. Kaminsky was selected with the No. 28 overall pick two years ago and was considered one of the top prospects in the Cardinals system.

Holliday goes back on 15-day DL with right quadriceps strain

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Matt Holliday is back on the disabled list. The St. Louis Cardinals placed the All-Star outfielder on the 15-day disabled list Thursday because of a recurrence of his right quadriceps injury. Holliday was hurt running to first base in the first inning on Wednesday. He missed 31 games from June 9 to July 16, and the Cardinals were 18-13 in his absence.

Infielder Greg Garcia was recalled from Triple-A Memphis, and first baseman Dan Johnson was designed for assignment to make room on the roster for newly-acquired outfielder/first baseman Brandon Moss. Garcia made his second appearance with the Cardinals this season. He appeared in 12 games from June 19 to July 3, batting .417 (5 for 12) with a tying pinch homer on June 26 against the Cubs.

The 25-year-old Garcia was batting .299 with a .404 on-base percentage and 33 RBIs in 81 minor league games.

Cardinals, Fox Sports Midwest announce new long-term deal

Sports

July 31st, 2015 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals will stay on Fox Sports Midwest through 2032 thanks to a new agreement. The 15-year deal announced Thursday begins in 2018 and runs through the 2032 season. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. The Cardinals are a lynchpin of Fox Sports Midwest, which broadcasts games to parts of 10 states.

Cardinals games are the highest-rated prime-time programming in St. Louis during the baseball season, and the local ratings ranked first among all Major League Baseball teams in 2014. This season, only the Kansas City Royals have higher local ratings.

Local rights packages in baseball have skyrocketed in value as live-event programming has become increasingly popular among viewers and advertisers. Team chairman Bill DeWitt Jr. says the deal will help keep the team competitive.

Croghan Paces Harlan Past Wahlert

Sports

July 30th, 2015 by Jim Field

Sixth-seeded Wahlert Catholic out-hit the third-seeded Harlan Cyclones, but Brett Croghan stranded 8 Wahlert runners as he hurled a complete-game, 4-0 shutout in Class 3A quarterfinal play at Southeast Polk High School on Wednesday.

The game was played Southeast Polk as a result of rain that postponed three Class 3A games from Tuesday, July 28 to Wednesday.

Croghan (5-1) struck out three and only hit one batter in his 7.0 innings of work. Despite allowing at least one hit in five of his seven innings, the right-hander buckled down with runners on base, not allowing a runner to reach third base until the seventh inning.

Behind the Harlan starter were two quick runs from the Cyclones in the bottom of the first inning. Dillon Sears reached on a leadoff walk before back-to-back singles loaded the bases. Croghan then drove in Sears on an RBI fielder’s choice. Harlan utilized a successful double-steal with runners on first and third base, bringing in Kyle Juhl as Harlan went ahead 2-0 after one.

The Cyclones went up 4-0 in the fourth inning on an RBI double by Nick Foss and a Jared Moser RBI single.

Croghan then retired nine of the last 11 batters he’d face, including a perfect fifth and sixth inning, to secure the win.

Wahlert starter Austin Savary was tagged with the complete-game loss, allowing four earned runs on 7 hits and two walks while striking out three.

Foss notched a team-high two hits off the left-hander, going 2-for-3 with a double, single, run and RBI.

Bo Burgmeier and Isaac Evans each had two of Wahlert’s eight hits, although no Golden Eagle player recorded an extra-base knock.

The Cyclones (27-7) advance to meet the second-seeded Pella Little Dutch (34-4) in the semifinals on Friday, July 31 at 1:30 p.m. at Principal Park.

Reds blank Cardinals; Holliday injured Wednesday

Sports

July 30th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Jay Bruce homered in the second to back Anthony DeSclafani’s seven innings of three-hit ball, and the Cincinnati Reds shut out the St. Louis Cardinals for the second straight night, 1-0 on Wednesday. The Reds ended a nine-series losing streak in St. Louis and have won consecutive games at Busch Stadium for the first time since July 6 and Sept. 2, 2011. It was the first time Cincinnati won consecutive games in the same series since June 2006.

Bruce’s 17th home run moved him ahead of Barry Larkin to ninth in franchise history with 199 homers. DeSclafani (6-7) did the rest, walking three and striking out three. Aroldis Chapman collected his 21st save in 22 opportunities. The Cardinals squandered another strong outing from John Lackey (9-6), who gave up two hits in eight innings and has posted a 1.67 ERA during his last nine outings.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Matt Holliday left Wednesday night’s game with the Cincinnati Reds with a right quad strain after pulling up while running to first base on a double play that ended the first inning. It is the same injury that sidelined Holliday for 31 games earlier this season. The Cardinals announced that an update on Holliday’s condition would be made Thursday. Holliday, a seven-time All-Star, is hitting .290 with four home runs and 31 RBIs. Holliday was replaced in the lineup by Mark Reynolds, who entered the game at first base, while Stephen Piscotty moved to left field.
