Former Iowa wrestler takes deal in burglaries case

Sports

August 4th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) – A former University of Iowa wrestler has taken a plea deal in his Linn County burglaries case. The Iowa City Press-Citizen reports that 19-year-old Ross Lembeck pleaded guilty to being an accessory to a felony and to drunken driving. Prosecutors dismissed nine burglary counts and other charges in exchange for Lembeck’s pleas. He was fined more than $1,300 last month and was ordered to serve a weekend program on drunken driving.

Lembeck is one of three former Hawkeye wrestlers arrested to face burglary charges after several vehicle break-ins in Marion on March 18. Nineteen-year-olds Logan Ryan, of Bettendorf, and Seth Gross, of Apple Valley, Minnesota, have pleaded not guilty and are scheduled to begin trial on Sept. 14th. The team has dismissed all three wrestlers.

August 4th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Chicago Cubs recalled outfielder Matt Szczur from Triple-A Iowa and designated left-hander Clayton Richard for assignment Monday night, before their game with the Pittsburgh Pirates. Szczur was hitting .295 with seven home runs, 26 RBIs and 19 stolen bases in 58 games with Iowa. In 32 games with the Cubs earlier this season, he batted .211 with one homer, eight RBIs and two steals.

Richard was 2-0 with a 4.29 ERA in four games, including three starts. Right-hander Dan Haren, acquired last Friday from the Miami Marlins in a trade, is set to take Richard’s spot in the rotation and make his Cubs’ debut Wednesday night against the Pirates.

All eyes on $101 million man as Chiefs’ Houston gets to work

Sports

August 3rd, 2015 by Ric Hanson

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) – The massive linebacker with the sweat-drenched biceps insists he never took a day off this offseason, even if he never showed up for one of the Kansas City Chiefs’ workouts. Early in training camp, it’s easy to believe him.

With his familiar No. 50 stretched across his broad shoulders, Justin Houston has wasted no time in terrorizing quarterbacks again – even if they happened to be his own teammates. While the Chiefs worked out in only shells during the first couple of days, and hitting the QB is always taboo this time of year, more than once Houston could have easily leveled the boom.

“I just made sure about being busy at all times,” said Houston, who often posted videos of his offseason workouts on social media while his representatives worked on a long-term contract. The deal was consummated just over a week ago, a six-year, $101 million pact.

Ferentz talks basics at Big Ten meeting

Sports

August 3rd, 2015 by Ric Hanson

Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz talked about the basics in an appearance at Big Ten media day. He says they have to fill some holes on both sides of the line to have success this season. “If you look at our football team, we have two outstanding senior defensive tackles, two outstanding offensive tackles. So the discussion really starts kind of there,” Ferentz says. “The good news is I think we have good players that are working hard to try to follow those players. Follow in their footsteps. They’re progressing. And certainly what we do in the next month is going to be really important for our development as a football team.”

Once the fill in the spots on the lines, they need to work on depth. “We need to develop depth at the quarterback position, receiver position as well. Defensively, the two defensive tackles, replacing those guys, developing depth there. The linebacker spot, we lost Quinton Alston, our middle linebacker. We feel pretty good about the group we have, and then a safety spot at the back end. So those areas are things we’ve been addressing,” Ferentz says.

Tight end Jake Duzey was injured in spring practice, but the coach is optimistic they’ll get him back. “The only good thing that came out of that was it’s not going to be a season-ending injury. So his rehab has gone very well. He’s making good strides,” according to Ferentz. “I think where we’re at right now, the next four weeks will be really critical how the four weeks go for him. And we’re optimistic. We’ll cross that bridge when we get to it, but we’re optimistic he’ll be able to return sometime in September.”

Iowa is picked to finish 4th in the Big Ten West this season.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Brandon Moss had his first big hit with St. Louis, a game-ending single in the ninth inning, and Randal Grichuk had a two-run homer to lead the Cardinals to a 3-2 win over the Colorado Rockies on Sunday. Moss’ one-out hit to left off reliever Scott Oberg (2-2) drove in Jason Heyward, who doubled with one out.

Closer Trevor Rosenthal (2-2) pitched a perfect inning for the win. The Cardinals have won nine of 12 and have a major league-best 40-16 mark at home. Colorado has lost four of five.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Nolan Arenado and Ben Paulsen homered, sending Jorge De La Rosa and the Colorado Rockies to a 6-2 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Saturday night.  Arenado connected for a two-run shot in the fourth against Lance Lynn (8-6) and Paulsen added a leadoff drive in the sixth. Paulsen finished with two hits and three RBIs in Colorado’s first win at Busch Stadium since May 12, 2013, snapping a string of five straight losses at St. Louis.

De La Rosa (7-4) allowed two runs and seven hits in 6 2/3 innings. The left-hander is 7-2 with a 3.41 ERA in nine starts against St. Louis since joining Colorado in 2008.
