CINCINNATI (AP) – Tommy Pham hit a tiebreaking, two-run homer in the sixth inning, pinch-hitter Matt Adams added a two-run drive in a five-run eighth and the St. Louis Cardinals rallied to beat the Cincinnati Reds 9-2 Sunday and avoid getting swept in the four-game series.

The Cardinals, on their worst stretch this season, had lost eight of 10 going into the series finale, and their division lead over Pittsburgh was down to 2 1/2 games. St. Louis then fell behind 2-0 on Todd Frazier’s second-inning homer and Tucker Barnhart’s fourth-inning sacrifice fly.

Those were the only runs the Reds would score against Michael Wacha (16-5), who allowed three hits and four walks in six innings. Outscored 20-3 in the first three games, the Cardinals tied the score in the fifth against Raisel Iglesias on Kolten Wong’s run-scoring infield single and Matt Carpenter’s RBI single. Sam LeCure (0-1) walked Greg Garcia and Pham homered on a 2-2 pitch for a 4-2 lead, his second home run of the season and first since July 5.

HOUSTON (AP) – Alex Smith threw for 243 yards and three touchdowns in the first half as the Kansas City Chiefs built a big lead and held on for a 27-20 victory over the mistake-prone Houston Texans on Sunday. Travis Kelce caught two touchdown passes in the first quarter, the first one coming after Kansas City intercepted Brian Hoyer on his first throw as a Texan.

The Chiefs were up by 14 in the second quarter when Justin Houston sacked Hoyer, forcing a fumble. Kansas City recovered it and a 7-yard touchdown reception by Jamaal Charles pushed the lead to 27-6.  Hoyer struggled in his debut before Ryan Mallett took over with about six minutes left and led Houston on two scoring drives to cut the lead to a touchdown.

Glenwood won the Atlantic Trojann Volleyball Tournament on Saturday with a record of 4-1.  St. Albert was the runner-up with a record of 4-1.  Treynor and Underwood each had marks of 3-2, Winterset was 1-4 and Atlantic had a record of 0-5.  The Complete results are listed here:  2015 Trojan VB Tournament

AMES, Iowa (AP) – C.J. Beathard threw three touchdown passes, including the tie-breaker to Riley McCarron with 2:14 left, lifting Iowa to a 31-17 victory over Iowa State on Saturday. Jordan Canzeri’s fumble deep in Iowa State territory had thwarted an earlier drive by the Hawkeyes (2-0). But their defense forced the Cyclones (1-1) to punt, Desmond King returned it to midfield and Beathard took the Hawkeyes to the decisive score, finding the 5-foot-9 McCarron in the back of the end zone from 25 yards out.

King’s interception gave the ball right back to Iowa and Canzeri scored on an 8-yard run to finish it off. The victory followed an emotional week for the Hawkeyes, who are mourning the deaths, four days apart, of former football standout Tyler Sash and former basketball star Roy Marble.

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) — Michael Schmadeke kicked a 24-yard field goal with 5:37 remaining in the game and then Deiondre’ Hall returned an interception 16 yards for a touchdown to give Northern Iowa a 38-35 win over Eastern Washington in a battle of FCS powers on Saturday.

Hall’s pick of Jordan West came on the first official play after the field goal — and after a holding penalty wiped out West’s 66 yard run to the Northern Iowa 17. The Eagles (0-2) quickly answered with a touchdown but the Panthers got a good kick return from Tyvis Smith and kept the ball for the final 3:20.

Aaron Bailey, who threw for two touchdowns, and Darrian Miller ran for 134 and 112 yards, respectively, for Northern Iowa (1-1). That offset 526 passing yards for Eastern Washington quarterbacks West and Reilly Hennessey, who combined to go 37 of 47.

Eastern’s Nic Sblendorio had career-highs of 10 receptions and 158 yards while All-American Cooper Kupp had 9 for 179 and two touchdowns before sitting out the second half with a hip pointer.

Atlantic Police Lt. Dave Erickson says anyone interested in bow hunting within the City Limits of Atlantic, for the hunting year 2015-16, can apply now for permit applications through the Atlantic Police Department. The hunt is allowed under the city’s Urban Deer Control Ordinance. Hunters wanting to receive an application should stop by the Atlantic Police Department during their normal business hours of 8-a.m. to 4-p.m., Monday through Friday.

The permit will allow you to harvest anterless deer. Once you have reported the harvest to the A-PD, you will be allowed to harvest a buck. Bow hunters that qualified last year with the Atlantic Police Dept. will not need to do so this year, but Erickson says you still have to pick up the permit application and have it filled-out.

New hunters will have to contact the A-PD and set up a time with Lt. Erickson, in order to qualify. Land owners who would like to allow a bow hunter to hunt on their land, should call the Police Dept. at 712-243-3512 during normal business hours, and sign-up.

Iowa State hosts Iowa this afternoon, in the 63rd meeting in the series. The Cyclones have won three of the last four and coach Paul Rhoads says of all the key matchups it starts up front. In terms of individual matchups one of the most interesting will be Cyclone sophomore tackle Jake Campos against Iowa senior defensive end Drew Ott.

ISU has the home field advantage but the road team has won the last three games.
Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz says the Cyclones have an experienced offense and an improved defense that has several new faces. Ferentz says the Hawkeyes must find a way to defend the Iowa State receivers.

It is also the first road test of the season for the Hawkeyes which Ferentz says is always a challenge. Iowa leads the all time series 40-22. Pre-game coverage on KJAN begins at 1:30-p.m., with the kickoff slated for 3:30-p.m.
