PITTSBURGH (AP) — Matt Carpenter raced home to break a scoreless tie in the ninth inning when two Pittsburgh outfielders mishandled Jon Jay’s single, and Mark Reynolds followed with a two-run homer to lift the banged-up St. Louis Cardinals to a 3-0 win on Monday night. The Cardinals saw their magic number to clinch a third straight NL Central drop to two after getting to Pittsburgh closer Mark Melancon (3-2). St. Louis can clinch with a victory at Pittsburgh Tuesday night.
Cardinals outfielder Stephen Piscotty was carted off the field following a violent collision with teammate Peter Bourjos. The team said Piscotty has a head contusion and was taken to a hospital for observation. Carpenter singled with one out and scored all the way from first when Pittsburgh right fielder Gregory Polanco overran Jay’s hit and center fielder Andrew McCutchen couldn’t pick the ball up cleanly.
Reynolds then drilled his 12th homer of the year. Jonathan Broxton (4-5) earned the win.
GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — Aaron Rodgers threw for 333 yards and five touchdowns, including three to Randall Cobb, and the Green Bay Packers beat the Kansas City Chiefs 38-28 on Monday night.
Rodgers led the Packers (3-0) on two successful first-quarter drives that ended with scoring passes to Cobb and rookie Ty Montgomery. He found James Jones for a 27-yard touchdown reception late in the second quarter for a 17-point lead at the break.
Jamaal Charles rushed for three touchdowns for Kansas City (1-2), which followed its stunning, last-minute loss at home to Denver with a respectable fourth-quarter effort at raucous Lambeau Field. Charles’ 7-yard TD with 1:25 left got the Chiefs within 10. But the end result was the same for Kansas City, which lost its second straight. Rodgers was 24 of 35 in another masterful performance for the MVP quarterback.

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State’s freshman outside hitter Jess Schaben has been named the Big 12 Rookie of the Week, the conference announced Monday. The award marks her second conference Rookie of the Week award, making her the third Cyclone to win multiple Rookie of the Week honors, joining Jamie Straube (2009) and Andie Malloy (2012).
Schaben led the Iowa State offense in its sweep of Texas Tech Saturday at Hilton Coliseum. The Defiance, Iowa native recorded 12 kills, her ninth match this season with at least 10 kills, at a .393 hitting percentage. She was also strong on defense, posting a solo block and two block assists.
For the season, Schaben leads the Cyclones and ranks sixth in the Big 12 with 3.36 kills per set at a .284 hitting percentage. She has steadily been improving on her blocking, too, now averaging 0.44 blocks per set.
Schaben and the Cyclones are on the road for a pair of Big 12 matches this week. Iowa State takes on Oklahoma at 6 p.m. on Wednesday in a match that will be televised on ESPNU. The Cyclones then play No. 3 Texas Saturday at 7 p.m. in Austin on the Longhorn Network.
AMES, Iowa (AP) — It’s been 13 seasons since Iowa State won its Big 12 opener. If the Cyclones can’t snap that streak this weekend, it could spell the end of their hopes for a comeback season.
Iowa State (1-2) will find itself in as advantageous a position as possible on Saturday. It’ll be at home, coming off a bye and hosting woeful Kansas (0-3), which is second to last among Power Five teams in total defense.
It’s a game the Cyclones know they can’t afford to lose, not with Texas Tech, No. 4 TCU and No. 5 Baylor on deck in October.
ST. LOUIS (AP) — Jason Rogers hit a pinch-hit grand slam in the ninth inning off St. Louis closer Trevor Rosenthal to lift the Milwaukee Brewers to an 8-4 victory over the Cardinals on Sunday. The Cardinals’ NL Central lead was cut to 2 ½ games over Pittsburgh. The Cardinals’ magic number for clinching the crown remains at five.
Khris Davis homered twice and drove in four runs for the Brewers, who scored seven runs in the ninth. All four Milwaukee batters reached safely against Rosenthal (2-4), who had converted 47 of 49 save opportunities. His last blown save came July 12 at Pittsburgh. David Goforth (1-0) picked up the win with one inning of relief.
Francisco Rodriguez picked up his 37th save in 39 chances. He retired Brandon Moss with two on to end the game.
