KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Royals have shut out baseball’s most volatile lineup in Game 1 of the American League Championship Series. Edinson Volquez pitched six innings and three relievers combined on the 5-0 victory. Alcides Escobar had two doubles and Salvador Perez hit a towering home run off Toronto starter Marco Estrada. Game 2 is this afternoon, also in Kansas City.

CHICAGO (AP) — Jon Lester heads to the mound for the Chicago Cubs tonight in New York for Game 1 of the National League Championship Series against the Mets. New York will counter with Matt Harvey. The matchup against the NL East champions will be their third of the 2015 playoffs but the first outside the Central Division. Chicago beat Pittsburgh in the Wild Card game and St. Louis in the Division Series.

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) — Brad Keselowski has won the pole for Sunday’s Sprint Cup race at Kansas Speedway. Keselowski turned a lap at 195.503 mph to beat out 10 other Chase drivers in the final round of qualifying. Carl Edwards was second-fastest at 195.454 mph, followed by fellow Chase contenders Kyle Busch, Kevin Harvick, Denny Hamlin, Jeff Gordon and Martin Truex Jr.

NAPA, Calif. (AP) — Brendan Steele remains the leader through two rounds of the Frys.com Open in Napa, Calif. Steele shot a 2-under 70 on Friday for an 11-under total at the midway point, two strokes ahead of Harold Varner III, Will Wilcox, Jhonattan Vegas and Graham DeLaet. Varner missed a 10-foot birdie putt on his last hole, keeping him out of Saturday’s final group in his rookie debut.

Shorter shot clock won’t affect Hawkeyes

Sports

October 16th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

Iowa basketball coach Fran McCaffery told the Big Ten basketball media day gathering in Chicago that a shorter shot clock will not change the way his Hawkeyes play offense but it may change the way some teams play defense. The college shot clock is moving from 35 to 30 seconds beginning this season and McCaffery says more teams may use full court pressure as a result.

Mccaffery says the Hawkeyes won’t look for quicker shots with the 30 second clock. The Hawkeyes debut with an exhibition game against the University of Sioux Falls on October 29th.

Star Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina having thumb surgery

Sports

October 16th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Star Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina is having surgery for a ligament injury to his left thumb. General manager John Mozeliak says Molina is expected to be restricted from baseball activities for two to three months following Thursday’s operation. He anticipates Molina will be ready for spring training. Mozeliak doesn’t believe Molina worsened the injury by returning to the lineup for the NL Division Series.

Molina was hurt making a tag play in Chicago on Sept. 20. He played the first three games of the NLDS with a splint and a bat shaped more like an ax handle. He did not play in Game 4. Reliever Matt Belisle will have arthroscopic surgery Monday to remove bone chips from his elbow. Pitcher Carlos Martinez will not need surgery. He was shut down before the end of the season with a shoulder injury.

Atlantic looks to show improvement versus Winterset

Sports

October 15th, 2015 by admin

The Atlantic Trojans Football (1-6, 0-4) team is coming off a disappointing loss on Homecoming to Shenandoah and hopes to show improvement in another home game this week against Winterset (2-5, 1-4).

Atlantic Head Coach Eric Waldstein says he likes the fight in his team and hopes they can continue to improve at the end of the season.  The Huskies like to keep the ball on the ground with a rushing game led by Brad Benshoof (449 yards, 5 touchdowns) and Jack Barker (397 yards, 4 touchdowns).

Kickoff Friday night is set for 7:00pm at the Trojan Bowl.

CAM hosts Fremont-Mills in important 8-Man battle

Sports

October 15th, 2015 by admin

The CAM Cougars (4-3, 3-2) will play host to the Fremont-Mills Knights (6-1, 4-1) Friday night in an important 8-Man District 8 battle.  The Cougars need to win at least one of their last two games, which are both against top 10 rated opponents, in order to have a shot at the playoffs. CAM Head Coach Joe Wollum says his team knows what is stake at the end of the season and he expects a physical game from the Knights.

Fremont-Mills is coming off their first and only loss of the season to Lenox.  The Tigers connected on a touchdown pass with only 25 seconds left to knock off the Knights on their home turf.

The Knights will try to bounce back against a CAM team also coming off a loss in week 7 at East Mills.  Both teams will try to overcome injuries to get a win as both team’s quarterbacks left their respective week 7 games with injuries. CAM QB Drew Ticknor is expected to play while F-M QB Sam Phillips will be a game-time decision.  Fremont-Mills Head Coach Jeremy Christainsen knows a big key will be to try to slow down Ticknor.

We will have coverage of the game for you on KJAN with pregame at 6:30pm and Kickoff at 7:00pm.  You can listen to the game on AM1220, FM101.1, online, or on the KJAN mobile app.  You can also watch a live video stream of the game on KJANTV online.
