Cardinals make qualifying offers to Heyward, Lackey

Sports

November 6th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) – The Cardinals have made $15.8 million qualifying offers to outfielder Jason Heyward and pitcher John Lackey, free agents who were instrumental on the NL Central title team. St. Louis is likely to attempt to sign the 26-year-old Heyward to a multiyear deal. He hit .293 with 13 homers and 60 RBIs, and he is an NL Gold Glove finalist.

The 37-year-old Lackey came the ace after Adam Wainwright was sidelined with a torn left Achilles and went 13-10 with a career-best 2.77 ERA. He started in Games 1 and 4 of the NL Division Series against the Chicago Cubs. Players have until Nov. 13 to accept the offers. If each signs elsewhere, St. Louis would receive an extra pick after the first round of June’s amateur draft.

Recent games give Hoosiers confidence against No. 10 Iowa

Sports

November 6th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) — Indiana already gave No. 1 Ohio State and No. 6 Michigan State big challenges this season. With a third top-10 matchup in six weeks looming, the Hoosiers (4-4, 0-4 Big Ten) are focused on finishing the job with a signature victory. No, things won’t get any easier Saturday when they host Iowa (8-0, 4-0) and its stingy defense.

But after pushing the Buckeyes and Spartans to the brink in October, Indiana’s players are convinced they’re capable of playing with any team even after losing four straight. What they must do, though, is play four full quarters of good football. The Hawkeyes, meanwhile, are the clear favorite in the West Division and have a chance to sneak into the College Football Playoff picture if they can sweep their final four games.

CCHS Physical Therapists work w/local basketball players

News, Sports

November 5th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

Basketball season starts soon, and the physical therapists at Cass County Health System are out in the community to speak with players about preventing injuries. Laura Hickman, DPT, ATC/L and Erin Johnson, PTA were recently at the Atlantic High School to talk with the varsity basketball teams about common knee injuries and ACL injuries including what causes them and ways to prevent them.LauraHickman

All of the athletes received information about exercises, tips to avoid ACL injuries/tear…s, warm-ups, and post-play cool downs. Laura and Erin both suffered ACL injuries as high school athletes, and they are now passionate about helping youth compete safely. They also spoke with the athletes about concussion symptoms and how to safely return to activity, and reminded them of the free injury screenings available to all student athletes any time they have a concern.
